I've seen no official confirmation (because there is none) but apparently somehow there was a massive spillover of gold and items from the PTS to the live servers due to a bug that was heavily exploited and spread like wildfire. I've even heard rumors that the exploiters willfully distributed part of the exploited gold and items they got to other completely unsuspecting players presumably to either get Twitch subs/views or maybe even actively try to stimy reprisals by dragging innocent people down with them. How in the world does something like this happen at all let alone be allowed to get so out of hand? I would appreciate it if someone with technical knowledge can explain so that I can be more weary in the future.
Personally, I haven't logged into the game at all since last night, have not traded with other players in a while, and have never downloaded a PTS client so I am not concerned for myself even if there is a complete server rollback but surely there will be thousands of players who are not as fortunate and will stand to lose a great deal as a result. This entire debacle is further exacerbated by the mother of all grinds-- err, I mean the 10th year anniversary event. If people lose those style pages after spending countless mind-numbingly boring hours farming for them they would be understandably completely gutted. Furthermore, any attempt to then make them whole such as by increasing the drop rate on the style pages or even putting them up on the event ticket vendor will annoy everyone who has already gone to hell and back to get them.
It's not an understatement to call this an unmitigated disaster... I sure hope for everyone's sake that lessons are learned from this.
