When I try to create a forum account, it says I need an activation code.

I was able to log in using my email address, but it uses this generated name.

I had an account on the old open forum, but it doesn't seem to have carried over, either.

How can I create an account? Or can I change my account name?

Should be able to change your name in the profile settings.

Mine was greyed out for some reason, so I couldn't. But they are doing manually.
