Worse, I have seen in TTC that several people sells them in batch of 10 from the very same account for about 4 to 5 listings in the same guild. That's make think they should know some way to dupe them and ZOS have done nothing to ban those cheaters. I have spent a whole day in Craglorn trying to get at least just one of these and got nothing. While everyday I see those accounts continue to list those 10 item batchs.
Directly farming them is about a 4:1 ratio of fortified to potent. Plus the fact that nirn trait is used almost exclusively on weapons drives the price higher.
^^^ This.
I'm not certain how the drops work, but I think that Potent Nirncrux drops from resource nodes for materials that can be used to make weapons-- namely ore for Blacksmithing and logs for Woodworking-- whereas Fortified Nirncrux drops from resource nodes for materials that can be used to make armor-- namely plants for Clothing, ore for Blacksmithing, and logs for Woodworking. Fortified Nirncrux also has a chance to drop from animals that can drop leather scraps, used to make armor.
So not only does Fortified Nirncrux potentially drop from twice as many sources as Potent Nirncrux (four versus two), but the possible sources for Potent Nirncrux are split between a chance to drop either Potent Nirncrux or Fortified Nirncrux. You can sometimes get one of each, but that's only if you have the CP perk that gives a chance for "increased yield" (double draws) from nodes, or if an event is on which grants guaranteed double draws from nodes.
That's why Potent Nirncrux is rarer than Fortified Nirncrux, and thus more costly at guild traders.
Fun fact: Seams for Jewelry materials are treated the same as ore for Blacksmithing as far as nirncrux is concerned, even though Nirnhoned is not one of the possible traits for Jewelry, since those two types of resource nodes share the same locations-- that is, every node which was originally (before the introduction of Jewelry crafting) designed to be exclusively for ore now has a chance to spawn either as a seam for Jewelry or as ore for Blacksmithing. I have personally gotten both a Potent Nirncrux and a Fortified Nirncrux at the same time from harvesting a Jewelry seam.
I am not sure about potent only coming from wood and ore, I was pretty sure it could come from cloth as well. I’ll have to notice the next time I farm some. I don’t get around to doing that as much as a I used to.
I used to farm them:
Both Fortified and Potents will drop from
Wood nodes, Cloth nodes, BS and JC nodes.
Yes I have got Potents from Cloth and JC, regularly.
The 4:1 Forts to Potents ratio is about right.
I have very, very rarely gotten a drop from Runes and Arch plants, so game glitch.
Even more rare I have had 2 Potents in 5 years from Surveys, also game glitch. When I used to farm them I would farm everything --people just leaving gold sitting on the ground.
200K/hr for mindless running with Lemmy blowing up my ears.
And that was when Potents weren't ridiculously over inflated by flippers.

I have also gotten both types of nirncrux from surveys, a lot more than 2 in 5 years. I do not think this is a glitch, as surveys can also drop Aetherial Dust (in non-Craglorn base game zones) and other zone-specific mats that come from resource nodes (e.g. Cassiterite Sand).

Short term problem that reaps long term benefits.
SeaGtGruff wrote: »2 Potent Nirncruxes at once is not a glitch, it is just really good luck on the RNG. With the CP perk that gives you a chance at double draws, you have a chance to get 1 Potent plus 1 Fortified, or 2 Fortified, or 2 Potent, but 2 Potent at once is really rare. And if a double-draw event is on, you could get as many as 4 Potent at once, but that would be like winning the lottery.
