Do you think AOE taunting in PVE should be embraced instead of being removed?

Tormentor was one of (if not the only) set that allowed this type of playstyle.

What's your opinion on it?

the Bow Vault grimoire can be an AoE taunt, at least how it was shown in the Gold Road reveal livestream.

so unless Taunt gets removed as an primary option in Scribing in update 42's release we will likely get more Area of Effect taunts.

I admit, a good AOE taunt skill available from either the Sword and Board or Undaunted skill lines would be a good thing to add, I have used Tormentor armor on a tank (Werewolf), and it was a lot of fun.

Because the code is in place to allow taunts to affect only untaunted targets (AKA in the Companion Sword and Board skill line) or not able to over-taunt (Arcanist) I see no reason that an AOE taunt skill could not be added in with the same limits.
Of all the things I have lost, I miss my mind the most...

Yes, but the taunt duration should be VERY low.

Since single target taunts are 15s, an AOE taunt should be like.. 2-4 seconds. The idea being you use it on a pack of enemies to get their attention briefly, but you still need to individually taunt each one to keep their attention long term.

    The trade off then becomes..

    4 enemies:

Do I waste 1 GCD to get their attention, then 4 more GCDs (total 5).. or do I just taunt 1 by 1 without an AOE taunt (total 4).

Lastly, since there is taunt Immunity, you can't just spam an AOE low duration taunt to achieve the same results. A tank would still need to have a single target taunt.

The issue then becomes a trade off of not just a GCD situationally, but you're also wasting 1 of your 12 skill slots for an AOE taunt you use once and awhile. That slot could be used for other beneficial group buffs, heals, etc.

That to me would be balanced. A 15s AOE taunt, no. Of course that goes against their philosophy of tanking in this game, because thats your main job and as soon as you take that away, the tank is free to start stepping on the toes of the other roles. I can see why it's problematic for them, but there is an easy solution around it as I described above.

Personally for me, I find it fairly balanced as-is (though @MashmalloMan makes a good point that it should be a shorter duration) Having to taunt 10 banekins individually in Banished Cells 1 on normal isn't Tanking, it's Tedious.

I should've added "Should be removed (I have tanked before)" and "(not tanked before)" as options instead... I am rather curious if they ever used it!

Specifically, companions need an aoe taunt. They can't spam it. Some bosses are more than just one enemy. I don't mean trash mobs, I mean bosses like Salothan's Curse in Vvardenfell. Also, they can't taunt an enemy until the current taunt expires. This makes them lose taunt for a time.

I highly recommend pulls and snares!

    Some pretty cool things to try as a tank;
-Silver Leash yanks and soft taunts at range.
-Caltrops provides armor pen (saving you from having to do it manually) and snares all targets in an area.
-AoE stunning is criminally underrated. Skills like negate, sleet storm, or Soul Tether can lock down an entire mob pull and interact well with other offensive abilities dps have (like dw doing more damage to stunned targets).

    Why am I posting this?

AoE Taunting is cool and I'm not advocating for its removal, but there's very fun and effective ways to shut down a room that are already in the game. It sounds like people want to keep everyone in their party safe, and there can be no safer place than the middle of a time stop where enemies can do *nothing*. No AOE, no incidental damage from dots, just a whole bunch if helpless enemies and some big DPS ready to rock!

AoE taunt may have extremely niche use however I for one really really really really really hate add management. I will suffer through taunting like 4 adds repeatedly but too many and I just would rather do something else.

I do think AoE taunting is a crutch but I've personally tried the mythical rush of agony x tormentor x templar setup and I found tormentor to be so un-useful in comparison to running TT I took it off. So its not giving a grand advantage or anything.

I think having it be a 5pc set (or with scribing, a non-tank weapon) balances out the AoE taunt as there's no pressure to run an AoE taunt over a single target one. Using other typical tank sets will always be better than sacrificing a whole 5pc for an AoE taunt.

I've mentioned it before but I'll say it again, it's only really useful in BC2 HM and DoM orb boss because you're taunting several adds (4 or more... hmm) and not by the main thing to be damaged (so TT is useless, sax/wm/ma/etc may be useful if people are close enough though).

An aoe taunt would be great for normal daily dungeons, keep add management nice and simple. Who cares if its a crutch, its not great to use in super high level content anyway
Add a Scribing skill that works like Arcanist beam.
    ---
Veteran players have been alienated and disengaged from Overland since One Tamriel, due to the lack of difficulty, and pushed into dungeons and trials; the minority of content in the Elder Scrolls Online. We can't take the repetition anymore, fix Overland engagement for Vet players. I don't even care if it's not combat related anymore, just make Overland engaging again.
    ---
Overland difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 10 years. 6 paid expansions. 25 DLCs. 41 game changing updates including One Tamriel, an overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver & Gold as a "you think you do but you don't" - tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game. I'm bored of dungeons, I'm bored of trials; make a personal difficulty slider for overland. Make a self debuff mythic. Literally anything at this point.

I don’t tank in ESO because I tanked in WoW off and on for 15+ years. WoW has AoE taunts, and “threat” levels you can gauge and manage. (ESO has “threat” as well, but not easily determined who has too much or too little.)

Until ESO gives us an AoE taunt that lasts for at least 6 seconds, I’m not tanking. Taunting each individual enemy is just ridiculous.

I would like to take a moment, to note that 1: the list of scripts on that picture is not final as stated by ZOS themselves, 2: just because AoE ability has a primary script called "taunt" does not mean that this taunt will be AoE taunt. And considering ZOS now came with statement that AoE taunting goes against core tanking philosophy they have, I doubt it would be.

On the main topic of the question tho: having AoE taunt would definitelly make tanking work of grouping the enemies for AoEs much more convenient. But I can live without it.

Very much this. AoE "soft taunts" already exist in the game with the various pull sets / skills.

I personally run vateshran shield set on my dk PvE tank for undaunted pledges. Combined with talons to root and chains to get the more distant mobs it's really easy to stack up an add pull and let the dds melt them (although requires decent dps of course!).
And the same is possible on (most) other classes: silver leash instead of chains, then class specific CC skill (NB/necro fear, sorc root etc).
Or use Rush of agony on a stam dd.

Problem is just (again) class balance and class identity. For this "AoE taunt" ESO style NB and warden are far and away easier to play as both have an AoE stun that other classes need to go out of their way to obtain (through sets or ultimates)

You really don't even need a aoe taunt what is stopping you from example throwing caltrops on a pack of mobs to pull aggro or vate snb pulling everything in and snaring them all ect ect alot of the issues that people run into is mainly dps pulling before the tanks are ready im not against their being a aoe taunt option but we really don't have a need for one

Give werewolves a natural taunt and a natural pull on their morphs and I bet this demographic would be satisfied with losing tormentor.

Personally, I find the current system of taunting single enemies more strategic and thus interesting to play. Tanks need to be deliberate about what they taunt in what order and what they don't bother taunting, instead of just throwing out an AoE taunt. So I'd prefer if ZOS kept their tanking philosophy as is.

Having said that, I think it's also fun to have this almost hidden Tormentor gear with an AoE taunt, with the obvious downside of having to equip an otherwise underwhelming 5-piece set. So wouldn't mind keeping this (exceptional) option in the game.

I don't mind people wanting AOE taunt but it should sit on a proc condition. With a cooldown on a 7 piece set bonus.
