If You're Upset About The Downtime

I'm coming to you as a seasoned MMO veteran with the understanding that many of you are frustrated (or worse) about the current NA server downtime, and I hope that I can offer some sort of advice or consolation in my following statements.

Yes, the downtime just plain sucks; Many of us have only been able to play a couple days at most, and at worst, some of us have only played a mere few hours. We have our shiny, new MMO installed, but cannot play it on our NA server. ZOS seems to be taking their sweet time, and in the meantime, our head-start Early Access time is dwindling.

"What the heck, ZOS?! This isn't anything like I expected!" Well, let's take a deep breath. For many of you, ESO may be your very first MMO, and you may not be familiar with the concept of downtime, what it means to the game, or how it affects your gameplay experience. ZOS is honestly not trying to "shaft" any of you on game time. In fact, they're trying to fix some pretty bad issues tied to player inventories, items, and other game-breaking bugs. ZOS wants to see you have a good time, and they want to see you play -- Really, they do. However, they need to address these issues before you can seamlessly enjoy your ESO experience.

"But ZOS should have had all this hammered out before release!" In a perfect world of infinite resources, this would be an absolute truth. Sadly, this is not the case. I cannot think of a single MMO launch (of which I've been in 4 official AAA launches) where the game did not go down for patching at least once in the first 72 hours, and at least twice in the first week. Even the best developers cannot account for every action (and interaction) a giant pool of players will perform. There's an old saying, "If you build it, they will break it."

"Well, then, ZOS should reimburse us for this downtime, even if it's needed." If you're talking about monetary reimbursement, that's simply not going to happen -- at least, not in the form of cold, hard cash. You're talking about paying $0.02 an hour, or 50 cents per day; It costs more than that for banks and credit card services to initiate the financial transactions. However!, I can also say that in every MMO launch I've participated in, the developers have shown us love and benevolence, and they gave us something along the lines of an extra day on our subscription, or a 24 hour experience boost, or something else very similar. You don't need to demand it, because developers and publishers want you to be happy in the long-run. They love you, they really, really love you.

So, in closing, let's all take off our grumpy and angry hats and put on our gamer hats. Surely you have other things (or games) you could be doing (or playing)! Yeah-yeah, you want to play ESO, but that's just not going to happen right now, is it?

I'm going to be honest. After reading the title, I half expected the entire topic to be, "I feel bad for you, son. I got 99 problems but an MMO ain't one."

That aside, +1. It sucks but it's going to happen.

    Very well said my friend!

I have played MMOs since *blush* UO.. those were the days right? The UO vs EQ (never played eq..anyway..) days were the best! Anyway, I always take these down times as a "get your housework done woman!" cue!

Anyway, on that note, off to do laundry! Happy hunting! Well, when the server comes back..
