I got to thinking.. wouldn't an Elder Scrolls movie be absolutely amazing?

Cinema is dead. Nobody will watch it.

A streaming series might work, if the adoption is done with love, care and some really good scripts. What happens to a good franchise with bad writing, you can see with the Witcher TV series. It is abysmal.

Because lets face it, the stories in the ES franchise are stretched out and quite forward. They cannot be simply "adopted" one to one.

If anyone here says: OH! But, PVP! I swear I'll ...

Thank you for the valuable input and respectfully recommend to discuss that aspect of ESO on the PVP forum.

Of course it would be amazing if one was made, even if the movie itself wasn't.
People - when was the last time a bad movie left a mark on you?

    Seriously, why not.

Depends on the movie was based on a character or quest, or if it was based on players.

If it was the latter, I would require that the script was based of on zone chat:

    "Come join my awesome guild!"
"Looking for members for random vet."
"Nobody cares about your guild, Timmy!"
"Hey can anyone TP me to Elden Root?"

I would totally watch a movie like that, and have a blast, because it reminds me of RP in games like Garry's mod, and some of that is just hilarious imo.

If it was a movie about a character or a separate story, then it could be interesting to either see a pro-prologue or an epilogue or something like that.

I liked your video OP! I'd love an animated TES film, based on the cinematic trailers with the same designs and characters, I've always found them amazing.

Amazing what happens when the people in charge of directing and script writing movies and shows don't care about the source material and/or think they can make/write something better than it and/or haven't even seen/read/played the source material and/or actually hate aspects or all of the source material

Last 4 or so years for movies and shows have been such a horrid disaster and disappointment...

It's basically the same as with every franchise. Or even original setting.

    Will it be good?
Depends on the story, the characters, and the cinematography.
Does the universe in which it is set matter?
Not really. They made a great movie out of effing Barbie, for pink's sake.
Only insofar as the background material may provide good stories already, or an environment in which it is easy to have a good story in.

So a TES movie might be good. It might not be (probably, the ratio of crap to awesome is seriously tilted in the former's favour.) But that has not too much to do with TES, and much more with whether it'll be a good movie, just in general.

Will it have to explain the whole background?
See, there's the beginning of a bad movie. Of course not. Trying to infodump huge loads of information into a story that doesn't need it, is just terrible.

For a very long time I wanted a DragonLance Chronicles movie. Then there was one and I realized the universe is a dark, evil place full of soul crushing despair and ever lasting misery.

    I'm a little better now.

I don't know...movies (and books) based on games tend to be hit and miss. More miss, in my experience. Though there have been a few exceptions. A book set in the Elder Scrolls world bombed, I think, because there wasn't another one (I tried reading it and even though I'm an avid fan of the ES world, I couldn't finish it). I just think not every imaginary world is suited to all media.

Given a target audience of 8 million-ish players, plus another 8 million or so gamer/MMO- fans, I don't think it would be profitable to make unless with a budget of US$10m or less. That greatly limits the length, complexity, format, and type of story that you could include. Granted, Godzilla minus one was made with a $15m budget, so high quality creative miracles ARE possible, but exceedingly rare if they are made in North America.

Perhaps something like the Discworld movies produced by Sky TV (I think)? Hogfather and others were made with live actors and minimal special effects, much like older horror movies, to keep the budget low.

I don't think so. Currently, movies and shows are mostly worse than internet fanfic writers writing fanfics for themselves or too absorbed in forcing their own world view into the universe rather than write compelling plot/characters that fit in the universe. Or they try too hard with 'what's up fellow kids'.

Movies based on video games haven't done so well. Like wow movie barely made the box office to cover expenses so not worth it. There just isn't enough fanbase to start with for the movie to gain enough popularity in movie theaters and get good sales with dvd releases and fan stuff. I would vey much like to get a good high fantasy movie or series to watch like every year something new, I love high fantasy. Sadly the costs to make such movies and series are enormous and the time and effort consumed as well. Then there is the question to get good enough writers and producers and actors etc. I highly doubt we will ever again see fantasy movies as good as peter jacksons lotr and hobbit trilogies. Starting from the cast which was near perfect, is too rare thing to happen. Animated series would be a different thing and much more doable but again, there is not enough skyrim/eso fans to take such an expensive risk only to see it fail.

As others mentioned, the track record for video game movies is not good, and even movie adaptations of well-known books is not that great either, in my opinion. It seems to be hard for producers to create something on the big screen that is better than what we envision in our minds for books, or our own personal experience in games.

That being said, if they could capture the feeling of your first new character waking up in the Wailing Prison of Coldharbour, fighting his or her way out with Cadwell, then washing up on the shores of Khenarti’s Roost, Stros M’Kai, or Bleakrock,, following the faction story until you met the Prophet and the Conpanions, and finally Defeat Molag Bal, that would be pretty epic…for those who have never actually experienced it in game. I’ve done it many times now and I’m not sure if a movie could do better. (Of course now I have to make my way to the Wailing Prison on my own, since the game has changed.)

I always say that watching movies and watching the hero win the day is good, but video games let you be the hero that fights all odds and saves the day and that is even better.

I mean if Critical role could do a good series based on their first campain (legend of Vox Machina)

ESO has just as much good material to make a series on, you just need some key elements :

-A good writer for the story and character

    -A good manager

-An appropriate budget (make a pilot episode, see how it goes if it does well start makign more)

-As pointed earlier, emphesise without shoving it in your face TES quirks and what set it appart from other fantasy universe

-Leave anything considered "woke" in the closet, if it doesn't fit a character or flow naturaly it will just not resonate at all with the audience, people dont like badly written character or things that feels forced upon them just to tick some boxes for an IRL agenda

-Todds approuval because a movie would likely fall into the TES canon

The Elder Scrolls Franchise is already pretty diverse. It embraces LGBT stories in particular. And the Redguards are a prominent culture. I mean, just look at Vivec. He's a hermaphroditic magical god king (to somewhat paraphrase Kirkbride) who seeks to be every gender. It has plenty of female leadership as well. An Elder Scrolls movie that didn't have these themes would be the one forcing an agenda. As those types of things are pretty standard to Elder Scrolls.

I would suggest not as the odds are against it being a great movie. The original Tomb Raider was pretty good for its time but that is the best it has been for a movie based on a game but it also had Angelina Jolie.

The WoW movie Warcraft is a great example of how bad it can get. It was a nice movie for the WoW fanbase but that was pretty much it. There is a reason why there was never a second WoW movie made.

There is only one IP, a significantly larger IP than TOS, that has movies and games where the movies are great but it is the movies that came first.

    Just my take.

The last of us was not a banger...too much of making Joel pathetic.

Arcane was excellent, dungeons and dragons was very fun and did a good job capturing the spirit of d&d.

These are outliers, though. Wheel of time: trash. Rings of power: trash. Halo: trash. Resident evil tv show: trash. Shadow and bone: trash. Essentially every marvel movie and show (minus 1 or 2) since endgame: trash. Almost every single star wars project since mandalorian s2: trash.

There are others I can't think of off the top of my head, but it is undeniable that writers and producers often actively hate the source material of these adaptations. THEY FREELY TALK ABOUT IT IN INTERVIEWS.
