Is it really the best idea to drop U40 during the Witches Festival?

Witches festival comes around every year and it's pretty much more of the same. Once you've run an event for two or three years, it becomes mundane.

The small concern with a major update is that there is a long outage (typically 12+hours) for PC players, and only PC players (not console). So, some players may miss out on getting their tickets, never mind the loot that they wanted. Re PC vs Console, that's fair game in this situation, as quite often it has been console players who get shafted in previous events.

The bigger concern though is that in past major updates, at least one in three has resulted in MAJOR problems for at least some players for several days. This often includes subsystems like group finder breaking (or not working as intended), which could be a problem for players wanting to run dungeons for Witch skulls.

PC players also often have problems from addons being incompatible, and sometimes from skill and gearset changes requiring some adjustments to builds before characters are ready to go into trials and arenas again. This might be quick and easy if you only have ONE character, but it's a time-consuming hurdle if you have 10+ characters that you want to do dailies on.

other q4 updates have also released during witches' festival for pc so it's not the first time.

I can't remember which 2 exactly, but I know it happened. One of them may have been the Western Skyrim 4th quarter, but I could be wrong.

Off the top of my head Necrom dropped during mayhem this year, there's definitely been others in the past

I am hopeful that maybe the Endless Archive bosses will add Witches Boxes to their loot table, providing an additional draw to bring in players to try the new encounter. Perhaps that is their plan. Vs over whelming the customers with too much going on at once

I don't think it's a good idea exactly, but I don't think they can walk it back at this point. Hopefully, the update goes smoothly; generally, many of the big updates have resulted in lots of issues that result in varying periods of maintenance, so I agree with your point. Doesn't seem like a great choice...but it feels like it's too late now.
