Personally, I want the Thieves guild to be more hidden this time, or have a "front", or something like that. It never made sense to me that the guards and everyone and their mom knew about a group of thieves just operating right there for the world to see. Maybe have the guards acknowledge they know the guild is a bunch of thieves, but they can't prove it.

I'd love to see the Theives' guild more properly RP'd, it always seemed like, in the ES series that you could slap some leathers on and run around taking anything that isn't nailed down just because you have 20 gold to slip a guard.

I suppose the main problem with this is, how would you find them so that you can join them. I suppose that they they could implement something like in skyrim dark brotherhood where they find you or something.

WE could find them, WE would know it's the Thieves guild. Im suggesting the devs. give it a different name or a "front" if you will. :)

*different name for the in-game world, but still be called the thieves guild by members who all agree to keep that a secret.

I have always seen the theives guild as a kind of mofia, you know who they are and what they do but you cant always prove that they did it.

    1) its an elder scrolls game, when in doubt i vote stay elder scrolls-ish

    2) i disagree with the premise, in much the same way as dom above. while it was common knowledge that there were thieves about (the crime rate) no one knew who it was, except the few who were bought and payed for. skyrim was hidden in the sewers, morrowind used a tavern as a front, oblivion there was a great deal of political pressure to protect the guild.

role play lies mostly within the player. the bribes to guards are because the guards are somewhat dishonest, and cheaper when in the guild because even the guards know what could happen to them if they were to cross the guild. think of it as a dialogue. 'no sir, you have the wrong man, let me make a donation to the policemans ball...' "very generous, but perhaps you could be more generous?" 'well, let's talk to your sergeant, he knows my friends, he will vouch for me.' - all within a 'pay 30 gold - bribe' click

Also, people know where mobsters hang out in real life. I'm not entirely sure its so bad that people know 'that seedy part of town' is where some criminal business is going on. It doesn't really mean they know the full extent of things. The Thieves Guild in Skyrim is mean to be in the maze of tunnels underneath the city in the ratway. I think the key to the Thieves guild is for the guild to not cross the wrong people. There's only so much realism you can have in a videogame though. Personally though, if they do add a Thieves guild I hope their skill line offers a way for classes other than Nightblade to get invisibility. Its one of the few skill abilities you can't actually replicate with some other skill line. I've got no problem with Nightblades being better, I just think there needs to be a way for other classes to go that road. I love the game, think its one of the best MMO's in recent years, but the closer it gets to traditional TES games where you can do anything... the happier I'll be :) Giving Stealth-Parity would be nice. I'm not sure anyone else feels the same way but I always get the sense that the Thieves Guild is a lot like the Russian Mafia or Triad. Anyone else see it this way?

That's not even true. In the ES games, the thieves guild were widely known about by guards and leadership of towns, cities, groups, countries.

As for the "triad" comparison. No. I don't ever feel that way lol. The Thieves guild is literally nothing like a mafia or mob aside from the fact that they take something that isn't theirs. By that logic, I am like a Triad because I stole hockey cards as a middle schooler ;)

The Thieves Guild as an entity has always been well known by locals where it resides or operates, but the location of its base, the size and details of its membership, the exact operations it has going on, none of that was known. Morrowind had the TG operating out of taverns or inns frequently, I really liked that.

I want a thieves guild, that doesn't operate like real life thieves guilds, where everyone knows where and who they are. Criminal organizations that bribe and threaten politicians, police force etc. are well known in real life ..... I want fantasy!

Exactly (on the last 2 comments). Couldn't agree more. I don't mind the "underground lair" of Skyrim, though. I liked that.

I love the thieve's guild, and I would prefer if they weren't openly known about, and if they used a front, I see where other people are coming from, but I feel like the Dark Brotherhood fits with the 'mafia' theme better. Thieves should be hidden, a good thief and a good assassin is marked by how many people know of their deeds, but don't know who did the deed. I want to feel like a thief, or a assassin that's apart of this underground, hidden crime organization, we hit and we run and no one knows who we are, but what we've done.

It's not even that I necessarily want them to be hidden, as in actually hidden, but more that they would be known about but not in a building with a flag that reads "Thieve's Guild" lol. I think the world should know about them, but have a very hard time proving they are criminals. And also, of course, that there are people in power who use the Thieve's guild. The Thieve's Guild should be mercs., basically, who get things done that others can't do. But, I think it's absurd there could be a building that says "Thieve's guild" and that they would be known in the world in the same way the mage's and fighter's guild is known. Skyrim did a decent job of conveying a good Thieve's guild, IMO. :)

This is kind of a loaded poll...

I would not agree that in past Elder Scrolls games the Thieves Guild was right out in the open. I would argue the contrary. Sure, everybody knows about them, just as everybody knows about the Dark Brotherhood, necromancers, and vampires, but that does not mean everybody knows where to find them.
In Morrowind, it was hidden in corner clubs, and you had to say the right things to join their ranks. In oblivion, you either had to bribe beggars to tell you or be arrested for stealing. In Skyrim, as @Alephen stated above, they were hidden away in the sewers.

My point is that they are hidden in plain sight. Your local bartender, a merchant, tavern patron... You could always find them, if you talked to the right way to the right people, but the average law-abiding citizen did not trouble themselves with that kind of knowledge.
My point is also, that I don't feel you give the secrecy of the thieves guild in past ES games enough credit.

For more info on the politics of the Thieves Guild, I suggest looking at this:
    http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Thieves_Guild

This makes me think, there is no option to ask about rumours from NPCs in this game. Was a cool, very RP way of immersion and finding quests.
