Infinite lag spike forces me to quit

Sometimes, at first not very often but now more regularly, a lag spike occurs - it is clearly a lag spike because actions lag with a 10 second delay or more - but it doesn't go away and I am forced to quit and restart the game. It is certainly not on my end.
