Crown Crate Gifting Fraudulent Activity On Consoles

Hi Everyone. Over the last few months, we've provided updates regarding the disabling of Crown Crate Gifting on the PC platform and the directly related fraudulent behavior. We recently discovered the fraudulent behavior has made its way onto console platforms (Xbox and PlayStation). In order to curb this, we have turned off Crown Crate Gifting on consoles as of 4pm EDT/ 8pm UTC today. We understand this is very inconvenient and frustrating. We're all on the same page there. We're continuing our work toward resolving this issue. Our aim is to curb the fraudulent behavior and work toward next steps with our temporary gifting solution through Customer Support.

On the note of the temporary program, we are planning for this solution to go live on July 13th for PC NA and PC EU. We will have guidelines outlined in a post on July 13th as well. We're looking to expand the scope of this to include console players in the near future now that console platforms are impacted as well. We'll have more information soon regarding this issue. Thanks again for your understanding through this process.

If this is down to "Fraudulent" behavior, why isn't all gifitng disabled?

    Thanks for the update, @ZOS_Kevin

Will we be able to get the crown crates that we, on PC missed for the last 4 months or will we have to wait for 2 ish years to get them?

It's an error that created a glitch that led to a bug that allows an exploit that allows fraudulent activity.

still kind of surprising that if it was fraudulent behavior it wasnt disabled everywhere if the same kind of fraud could occur on both PC and console lol

hopefully once they get the issue resolved they could go into a little more detail as to what the fraud actually was that was happening if whatever method was the same across the board

Sorry for the error, the behavior is specific to Crown Crate Gifting. We've edited the original post to reflect the change.

how can the fraudulent behaviour be specific to crown crates, if its all the same gifting system?

I'm perfectly aware of that. I was hoping people would notice my sarcasm; as ZOS has been implying that crate gifting was broken, instead of intentionally disabled. Leaving out that detail for a couple of months (as this issue has been going on since... March?) has resulted in some questions and remarks in the main topic about this issue, due to the fantastic history of ZOS communicating openly with the playerbase.

I have suspected all along that the fraud was a method for players living in areas that prohibit crates (under gambling laws) to obtain them, not fixing that would be a huge legal liability and PR mess for ZOS. What other distinction is there between crates and other parts of the crown store?

    Thank you @ZOS_Kevin

Question though. If the update/fix for the PC proves successful, can we get a guesstimate as to when it will be implemented on Xbox/Playstation?

I'm sure details will not be shared but it just seems odd now. There are old posts complaining and warning far before these were added to the game. Kinda curious which speculations are foreshadowing this issue

Huh, I’d like more details on what the “fraudulent” activity actually was, this makes me sad as I was planning to buy the 8k bundle from another player. Hopefully whatever fox is being implemented is done well before that leaves the platform.

Ohhh. Interesting theory. That could possibly be it!

I wish they'd tell us something now that it's disabled on all platforms. I understand they cannot tell us the methods people were using. But, it would be nice to get an idea of why this is necessary in the first place. Even if they can't be as specific as your theory, something along the lines of "people were able to get crates they shouldn't have" or something would be nice. Just to put minds at ease that other transactions are safe.

I know it can be frustrating, but no company, service provider, or store will ever give you details about stuff like this.

When it comes to anything regarding purchases, more transparency is a usually a bad thing.

ZOS' stance is that you spend cash to get crowns. And you get exactly what you pay for. No game of chance involved. Pay X dollars, get Y crowns. If you spend those crowns on crates, that is spending in-game currency on an in-game item. No different than buying an alchemy satchel with Tel Var and hoping you get lots of columbine and corn flower.

They did acknowledge that gifting being disabled was not a bug but a deliberate choice back in April, albeit only after people noticed it had been briefly turned back on:

Ah lovely, I do so enjoy finding out I can no longer gift my girlfriend crates because of a few bad actors and ZOS doesn't want to give an answer that isn't needlessly vague.

Well, you can always gift her "real world" money so she can buy the crowns to get the crates herself.

I've always gifted crates to friends for Christmas presents. Now that's disabled? Great. This seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot by disabling a revenue stream.

At least this is being sorted out, meanwhile during the PVP EVENT, CYRODIIL is just crashing constantly (at least on Xbox), sometimes over half a dozen times over a 15 minute span...

Although Crown Crate gifting is something that barely affects me, I would have liked to have an increased rate of Seals of Endeavor added to all platforms for the duration of this issue.

Unless you celebrate Christmas in July, ZOS still has 6 months to hopefully figure out a solution in time for you to gift crates.

If you do celebrate Christmas in July-- well, maybe next year.

It's pretty easy to assume why crown crate gifting specifically would be affected. It's because you can make endless repeat purchases for them and they rely on RNG. So my guess is that the exploit made it so subsequent purchases/gifting of crates could be done free of charge or it would affect the RNG in some way.

I'm well aware that you can make repeat purchases of a lot of other things in the store, but it's nothing they don't already provide for free through login rewards.

At least that's my guess, it would make sense to some extent since the rest of the stuff is a 1 time purchase.

Also @ZOS_Kevin I know this has been asked befor, but as far as in aware there was no answer so far, will there be any compensation for the whole issue?
Will we get the chance to gift some of the crates people missed whilst this issue was up or a pet, more seals of Endeavour, or anything?

Like other people have said a yes or no answer would suffice, even a "we don't know right now" could work. Just any answer that would give some info to the players asking the question.

Why in the world would there be compensation for this? It's not an essential service. It is not preventing you from playing the game. :D
