Motion Sickness / Nausea

I was wondering if anyone else but me got violently nauseous while playing this otherwise awesome game? For whatever reason I'm afraid i might not be able to play unless some options get included into the game like turning off head bobbing or removing the pointer in the middle of the screen..

I'd love any and all helpful advice you could give me if anyone else have experienced this.

EDIT:
Apparently i'm not the only one:
http://tobolds.blogspot.dk/2014/03/the-elder-scrolls-online-is-nauseating.html

Yet another EDIT:
Yeah, i've played around with a lot of the settings and played with my view entirely zoomed out and in 1'st person and nothing helped sadly :(

There is a FOV slider coming. Are you playing first person? Try third person. Move further away from the monitor. Try around with some video settings.

Not nausea at all, but in first person or zoomed close, when i turn i do get a bit of eye stress i can feel, but as i tend to usually zoom out when i play it hasn't been an issue.

But yes there is something there.

Actually, I had a similar reaction, but for different reasons. I was in 3rd person mode, and spent a lot of time rummaging through baskets and such. Within a few minutes, I had to logout from disorientation. Took a 3 hr nap, felt better. I feel ESO owes me 3 hours of medical for my sub. :)

I suspect a FoV slider would solve the problem for a lot of people like you. Have you tried playing zoomed out in 3rd person, that can sometimes help.

Does anyone know if they have commented about re-adding a FoV slider?
  • everseeing_njpreub18_ESO
Last i heard they are going to add a FOV slider but it wasn't making it for launch, so i assume its still coming.

My friend suffers from eye stress from playing games and nausea with a specific few aswell.
He bought some gamer glasses and he hasn't had any problems like that since.

Heh, it was more to illustrate that i wasn't the only one who had this specific problem with the game.

Fair enough, he may be exaggerating the problem though and that could potentially make you seem less genuine and more trolling.
Not trying to be mean towards you, just stating what i read.

Either way i would look into alternative solutions until they add a FOV slider, there are a few things around the net that work in these situations, i linked one that could possibly help, im sure there are plenty more options out there.

yuh - i remember getting so sick when I first played Skyrim that I uninstalled it but i love the game - I had really hoped I could get through more than one quest in ESO without feeling the need to lose my coffee - i updated my drivers, manipulated settings - i don't even know where i left my toon, i quit the game so fast. I guess I go back to my other mmo's till a solution is invented. I have gunners but they only seem to alleviate eye strain - they do nothing for my stomach - weird since i'm known for having a stomach of steel - love motion rides, loops, spins but i can't last beyond one hour of eso...humiliating :(

I had motion sickness playing Skyrim, but playing in 3rd person in ESO is completely different. Might just be because I was playing Skyrim on a console and looking up at the tv screen. I feel nothing when I'm on the computer.

Try eating pickled ginger. We use in on boats. Turn a baseball game on another tv. Have a well lighted room. Pause and walk around every now and then.

Unfortunately, there really isn't much a developer can do about motion sickness. Some people are susceptible to it, others aren't. And the people that are susceptible to it don't always have the same cause, and aren't always helped by the same settings. I'm fortunate to not be susceptible to it, but I understand how antiemetics work since Benadryl is something I take regularly for allergies.

One thing that a lot of people may not know though: Dramamine (the most common antiemetic) is the exact same ingredient as Benadryl (a common/cheap antihistamine/sleep aid). Basically, Dramamine combines diphenhydramine (Benadryl) with a mild stimulant to help ward off a bit of the drowsiness that diphenhydramine causes. This makes it slightly less effective than regular Benadryl, but it also makes you a little bit less drowsy.

Anyway, if you feel motion sickness coming on, take a Benadryl. You can get bottles of like 100 pills at Walmart for around $2 (generic brand). And if you get drowsy, there's always coffee. Or you can get generic Dramamine (also called dimenhydrinate) for a little bit more. Also, as someone else pointed out above, ginger is also a antiemetic. So ginger ale is good to keep around too, if you are susceptible to motion sickness.

I got a little bit of this the other day while foraging and exploring. I think I was rotating my 3rd person view too quickly and too often. I was trying to look at everything at once, lol. What helped was limiting my mouse movement and not swinging my view around so often or quickly. Also chose to run (not sprint) in a more direct line while keeping my eyes focused on a smaller cone in front of me.

My problem is this. I play the game 3rd person, zoomed out the max in order to center my character, and at that point, I feel sick after about 15 mins worth of gaming.

I do not get the problem zoomed closer, but I am afraid I simply will not play the game with the dumb off centred view point they are insisting we have to use.

As such I have not logged in since day 3 of early access and will not activate my sub plan, there is literally no point as I will not be able to play it.

I do not play MMOs in 1st person, you have zero sense of special awareness.

I have played UO, EQ1/2, DAoC, Warhammer, Swtor, Lotro, AoC, none of these give me any issues whatsoever. Addtionally I have played every elder scrolls game and they have never made me feel sick. There is something fundamentally flawed in this for me personally, and I have no idea what it is. There is only one other game that has done this to me, and that was 20 years ago, Escape from Castle Wolfenstien.

Additionally, I am 100% against peoples advice to take any form of even minor medication in order to play a game. People need to realise that they are not GPs or Chemists before they dispense advice in that manner.

The locked FOV (65 FOV) is the real issue. As others have said, the FOV slider should resolve this for most people. The minimum that anyone should really be using, especially on PC, is really about 90 FOV. In some cases people are more comfortable with up to around 105 - 110, though. Of course, this all comes down to preference and whatever your particular setup is.

I find it extremely odd that the FOV slider didn't make it in for launch as it was on the PTS before the game even came out. The extremely low default FOV right now makes first person completely unviable in situations where you're fighting more than 2 or 3 mobs anyway since you can't see what's around you and in most cases you can't see ground effects either.

Personally, I love playing in first person and I'm really looking forward to them getting the FOV slider implemented so I can actually enjoy it again.

That's a lie. A developer can use a proper FOV value or include a way to modify it by the player. I guarantee all those topics will dissapear once that happens.

..that's coming from someone who had to leave Guild Wars 2 due to unbelievable headaches caused by *** FOV. All my problems in GW2 dissapeared once I found a dirty hack changing FOV by manipulating game's memory. Sadly, it stopped working at one point, and so I stopped playing.

My girlfriend is having the same problem. It's quite odd, as she's never had this sort of issue playing any other computer game, and has logged many hours playing other MMOs. She likes the game, but can only play for about 15 minutes before she's ready to hurl.

I'm not sure what's wrong with the game that it's causing this problem for some people, including people that don't have this problem with other games.

EDIT: She only plays in third person. Doesn't seem to make a difference how far zoomed in or out she is, what the mouse sensitivity is set to, etc. Not sure what's different about this game from WoW or SWTOR that it's doing this.

Go to esoui.com and try one of the addons hiding the reticle when it's not needed (maybe Wykkyd's Full Immersion). I heard it helped some people.

Thanks, I'll have her give that a whirl. Pretty weird problem, given she isn't prone to motion sickness in general, and has never gotten it from a video game before.

@Fossybear, I'm having this too but for other reasons but hope this can help. I'm pregnant and suffering morning sickness which becomes very intense when playing. I never had any problems with ESO before so it related to the baby, but I have found using acupressure bands, called PsiBands (toys r us) or SeaBands really helps. They are for all nausea not just pregnancy so they may help you. They are bulky on your wrists though so they can get in the way of the keyboard. I have learned to deal with it.

Also what has worked for me, all graphics on low or off except sub sampling. I lowered camera speed, zoom out in 3rd person and lower res. The game will not be pretty, but it makes it playable. at times I even chat with guild mates or craft if I need a "break".

Now the last thing may or may not work because I do believe this is pregnancy related, but I also find having either a menthol cough drop or a pepper mint to suck on while playing really helps. I suppose it won't hurt to try. I never had motion sickness with games before so th peppermint trick is more my own thing.

edit, just realized this was an older thread so the OP may not be worried now :) by hopefully the others dealing with motion sickness can benefit from my post.
