Sounds to me like they just forced the lock.

Yup, the lazy way of picking locks. You can still do a master lock within a few seconds if you're good at it though. I've done it many times.

I can tell you don't play (or at least open chests) in Imperial City. Fiddling with a lock is a good way to get ganked. Smash and grab, and be on your way, ready to battle. But good on you for calling everyone else "lazy."

IC is definitely one place where I force locks, although I'll pick the lock on occasion, depending on how many players are in IC and where the chest is. Most everywhere else, I'll usually pick the lock so I get some XP, but will occasionally force the lock.

Forcing locks can be a hassle because it always breaks the pick, and could break several picks before you're successful, so if you're someone who prefers to force locks then you've got to keep your eyes on how many picks you've got left.

did you know you can buy lockpicks from npc vendors in towns? i have a stack on each alt plus one in the bank so i never have to worry about running out

I used to pay NPC merchants to repair my armor, but now I just wait until something breaks and then use the repair kits that I get for free from my daily crafting writs. I've also bought recipes from NPC merchants as needed for the daily Provisioning writs while leveling up that Skill, and have very occasionally bought Imperial style mats if needed for doing holiday writs, or runes for Enchanting if I didn't have any for a specific level.

But my general policy is to never pay in-game gold for anything I can get for free, such as racial style mats (from deconstructing gear and looting), Provisioning ingredients (from looting), water for Alchemy writs, etc.

That includes never buying Soul Gems or Lockpicks, since they're so easy to obtain for free in-game. Once I acquire a full stack of those and have made a good start on an additional stack, I sell my full stacks to an NPC merchant. I've also given each of my alts a full stack each of filled Soul Gems and Lockpicks. I used to save all of my excess stacks, but decided to sell them to NPC merchants when they started taking up too much bank and inventory space. I know I could sell them through a guild trader for more money, but I find it to be too tedious to look up what the current selling prices are, and even when I listed things at far below the average price they hardly ever sold and I ended up getting them mailed back to me after 30 days, so I just gave up on guild trading.

On the other hand, I've given stacks of Soul Gems and Lockpicks to new players for free, but haven't done that lately because of selling my excess stacks to the NPC merchants. Also, last night I saw a few "new players" posting identical lengthy messages in zone chat asking for free Soul Gems, because it's apparently become a thing for bot(?) accounts to beg for free Soul Gems so they can turn around and sell them for gold-- so that puts a huge damper on ever again wanting to hand out stacks of free Soul Gems or Lockpicks.
