Arcanist skills look lame

Sorry, but the Arcanist skills look terrible. Why would I want a tentacle dps skill?

The green light looks a bit too bright to my taste. Especially the beam's light was so bright it looked kinda bad.

I'm reserving any judgement about this class until at least a year after it comes out. Changes will be made. I think the real test for this class is how it stacks up against other classes.

I personally like the way the skills look. My only complaint is the herald of the tome skill line ultimate. It kind of reminds me of the necromancer's bon colossus. they both seem to be themed around "summon a big temporary creature and the creature casts ult". Which is neat but imo too similar to each other.

I like how they went and shaded them green. I mean green is a very neutral color and if you must have a bunch of effects going off all the time its better to keep that easy on the eyes.

I think it looks cool. I like the green personally green is used a lot of times especially in Disney for dark magic. It also fits the theme well form the Dragonborn dlc from Skyrim. I think it looks pretty unique and ties into the lore. I dig it.

The style of the animations looks interesting, but I really don't like the animations that hide weapons in 3rd person. If it is going to be the same as with necro, where all abilities do this, it would be really annoying. At least with the old classes you can find some abilities that keep the weapons displayed, even though the most powerful abilities are mostly the ones with the disappearing weapons. Who finds this appealing? This is so immersion breaking.

Hopefully I can avoid seeing their VFX too often, they're overdone (like a lot of VFX in ESO) and not my kind of thing.
I can definitely say that I won't be playing the class aside from testing it on PTS.

My first impressions are that I like how they're trying to do something different with a new class. We've already got more traditional classes, so it's nice to see something fresh. It's pretty niche from a RP perspective but fits into the lore of tes probably better than some of the other classes tbf. I like it.

@Faulgor you're gonna go nuts when I tell you what genre The Elder Scrolls is. :p

      ---

As for my own thoughts; I love most of the aesthetic. Green is a good color. The runes and stuff look great. The sound design is great by all accounts. Sadly, as someone who wants a non-Daedric cultist mage, I'm gonna have to skip this. Summoning a Watcher and shooting Herma Mora tentacles out my arm are a bit too "daedra worshipper mage" for me.

I'd actually go ape [snip] if they leaned into the more sci-fi aspects of TES. I mean, there's a reason why I quote C0DA in my signature, I love that stuff. Heck, make KINMUNE canon for all I care.

But as a Daedra-worshipper class everyone and their mother will run around using, it feels a bit out of place. There's something to be said for the anything-goes and rule-of-cool approach to TES lore, but we are reaching levels of flashy that change the whole tone of the game. I feel differently about this depending on time of day, so it's just an observation.

@Faulgor Fair. Also, sadly I cannot see sigs on mobile for some reason, otherwise I would've referenced that lol. But yeah, as you could guess, I LOVE the CwC DLC for the very reason you mention.
(As an asside, glad to see another KINMUNE enjoyer on the forum.)

As someone who currently has no class they want to play, I feel you on the aesthetic thing. I however, am far TOO picky, which is why I cannot help but feel a little disappointed that Arcanist nails ALMOST everything for me, except a couple key skills, with the tentacle essentially being mandatory for damage.

I must admit, I very much enjoy flashy spell effects. It gives me that mage power fantasy I want and is also the reason I cannot play magblade, which is the complete opposite end of the spectrum with its really quite subtle spells by comparison.

I WOULD play Warden, but I have no clue what the heck that class fantasy is meant to be.

I think a lot of the skill concepts from what I've seen so far are pretty cool, like the magical blade throwing skill, the portal, and the crystal that you spawn and heal for healing/buffs.

I wish that the tentacle skills were morph only at the very most.

Heh, I was kinda the opposite, having an idea for a tentacle-based char (more like Ooze-based Bosmer) and being disappointed it's basically just a debuff skill. Hopefully there'll be enough build flexibility for both of us.

Zenke also said on the stream yesterday that "... narratively, too, a lot of fun opportunities. Again, for every player you interact with your class in a different way, and with the Arcanist you don't have just to be a "Daedric cultist", you can have a bunch of different relationships with Hermaeus Mora, with Apocrypha, with the power suite itself, it's all up to you to decide what that journey looks like".
So while I don't know if I can make it work to build a non-Mora-ite Arcanist, if they say their intent was to make it possible, I'll certainly give it a try.

Never warmed up to Nightblades myself, either. I'll probably delete my 3rd one to reroll as an Arcanist (fittingly he already is a Hermaeus Mora cultist, mostly because he's the mule where I keep all my crafting motif dupes lol).

And nobody can figure out Warden, outside of my Skaal healer, the class doesn't make sense.

@Faulgor you're gonna go nuts when I tell you what genre The Elder Scrolls is.

Lol yea I was going to say the same thing. People forget this universe has a literal space race between Reman Imperials and High Elves, a subterranean culture of mechanical elves that once had airships and a literal mech colossus/weapon, and a Dunmer god that literally designs things to function like machines with cybernetic lasers as his defense systems.

As far as the class itself, yea it’s a bit over the top, but ever since it’s announcement I’ve slowly grown more and more excited. I think the Lovecraftian elements are typically touted with Herma Mora stuff, but this whole class and chapter seem to actually walk that walk and not just talk it.

Overall I’m actually excited, and the color and sound design just seem super sharp to me.

Edit: I will admit I don’t agree with Zenke on the “you don’t have to be a Daedric cultist with this.” It’s pretty much your only option RP wise, either that or a “former cultist” like Leramil lol. Unlike the other ones you can kinda twist into your own interpretation, this is definitely just a Herma Mora worshiper.

While all of that is in the lore, it is rarely in the games. Too rarely perhaps for my tastes, but Todd Howard has made good arguments for why that is so, mainly because these truly otherworldly and strange elements should remain so by being more scarce. Which is one of the reasons why Blackreach worked so much better in Skyrim than ESO, imo.

I fear so, too, but I'll have to get a feel for the actual skills on the PTS to see if they can be interpreted as something else.
E.g. Fatecarver, the beam skill with a black book in front of you, could also be interpreted as you merely using an ancient artifact/tome, daedric or otherwise, use of which wouldn't necessarily make you a worshipper. As far as I can tell, none of the visuals use Daedric script, either - which sucks in terms of TES recognition, but is a plus for non-Daedric roleplay.
But we'll see, considerable head-canon is required in either case, especially for Arcanist Werewolves and Vampires.

@Faulgor for me, my idea would be to treat Arcanist as just a form of ancient magic, trying to avoid Daedric ties. As you say, the tome can pretty much be any spellbook which is cool. I think I'll need to see how that ink debuff figures into overall damage numbers and also check out the runes and glyphs in closer detail. I also didn't notice any script that I recognised in them, but I won't know for sure until I look a little closer at them. The DPS ult doesn't worry me so much, as that can easily be replaced with destro ult or even the Arcanist healer ult, which seems all-round a solid choice.

I'm not a fan of the animations and the colours from what we've seen so far. Although they look intricate and complex, at the same time they also look kind of cheap? Not sure how else to describe it, but there's something flimsy and mobile-game-y about the visuals, and they are way too busy and intrusive. It's a pity because the skills themselves seem very cool, but the visuals will probably be very rough on the eyes, and will get tiring fast.
