How do you pronounce "Arcanist"

Just curious... I've always pronounced it "Ar-cane-ist", which I assumed was correct because the root word is "Arcane". Then I watched the live stream announcement and all the devs pronounced it "ar-cun-ist".

I'll probably stick to my way of saying it. Old dog, new tricks and all that... :)

English is confusing, isn’t it? The stressed syllable changes in words like TELepath and teLEpathy, and similarly here with arCANE and ARcanist.

    I pronounce "arcanist" like... "are-cane-is".

Given that the word derives (I think!) from the adjective “arcane,” I pronounce that long “a” in the middle. So ar-cane-ist. With the stress on “cane.” At least until the devs tell me differently!

According to the dictionary, it's pronounced ar-CANE-ist (ɑːˈkeɪnɪst). But since it's a specific class in ESO, I'll just follow the devs' pronunciation. Or not.

Going from "k" to "ŭ" requires less effort than "ā", but realistically I tend to drop the vowel entirely and say ar'k'nist.

    Ar-cun-ist
I'm sure Ar-cane-ist is the correct way, but I still say Ar-ca-nist due to personal accent and dialect.

Here's a neat fact from Encyclopedia Brittanica on Arcanists:
Arcanist, (from Latin arcanum, “secret”), in the 18th century, a European who knew or claimed to know the secret of making certain kinds of pottery (especially true porcelain), which until 1707 was known only by the Chinese. The secret was discovered in Saxony by Ehrenfried Walter von Tschirnhaus and Johann Friedrich Böttger and was carefully guarded from potential rivals. A factory was established at Meissen about 1710, giving opportunities for gain to defecting workers, who could sell the secret to other pottery factories. There were many arcanists (and pseudoarcanists) itinerant in Europe in the 18th century, including Joseph Jakob Ringler, Robert Dubois, and Paul-Antoine Hannong and his sons Joseph-Adam and Pierre-Antoine.

With that in mind, I like the name for Arcanist having to do with "secret knowledge" with the root Latin word being Arcanus/Arcanum meaning "secret". And then of course mixed with the generic high fantasy "Arcane" interpreted meaning "magic" in modern fiction. Neat.
arcane (comparative more arcane, superlative most arcane)

    Understood by only a few.

    Synonym: esoteric
    Antonym: mundane
    arcane rituals

    (by extension) Obscure, mysterious.

    Synonyms: enigmatic, esoteric, recondite, clandestine
    arcane origins
    arcane details

Requiring secret or mysterious knowledge to understand.
Extremely old (e.g. interpretation or knowledge), and possibly irrelevant.

    An arcane law

(This is also more aimed for all my fellow second language speakers who might like some English facts on the root of "Arcanus" and where the word "Arcanist" comes from in the real world! <3)

Small Edit: Of course there is also "Arcana" that relates to tarot card reading. Due to its earliest inception being traced at the very least to 1400s Northern Italy and the Latin word predating this significantly, and modern fiction using the term often indiscriminately, I thought it best to leave it out. That only the modern fiction rendition of the "arcane" being relevant to the explanation.

    In UK English a final ‘e’ lengthens a preceding ‘a’ , so: Arcane = ar-CANE

without the final ‘e’ the ‘a’ reverts to the short form, so Arcanist = AR-can-ist.

Note also the syllabic emphasis shifts as well.

This is Received Pronunciation English, other Country’s accents will differ.

In short, say it how you please!

I would just add that, in addition to Received Pronunciation, each county accent in England might pronounce the word differently. Accents and phonetics are dramatically different from county to county, city to city. Also true in Scotland and Wales.

So I agree, say the word however you want. In fact, has anyone suggested pronouncing the "c" like and "s" yet?
