Action Customization can solve the Jabs/Flurry problem

If you saw Firesong preview on Twitch, you are aware of action customization is coming to base game, where you can choose different animations and colors for specific actions such as harvesting and skills.

I suppose we should be able to pick the old animation back?

That's possible. And I think it would be fantastic to have the option. It would also open up the idea of customizing other skills or maybe even having different skins for Sorc pets/Warden bears. Which would be extra cool, and it something I know a lot of people have been asking for for a while....

Either way, yes I would love the opportunity to change the templar jabs animation. Please.

With such showcase I'd say it's more of memento/emote during some action so out of combat plus pretty basic would be the theme of this... Feature? Talos almighty how low we're descended.

That’s what I was thinking too! I’m surprised that it wasn’t one of the ones that were shown. Maybe we can finally get more swimming animations too… the current one bothers me on a strangely high level haha. I hope the 3 we’re getting are just to test the waters and that greater things are to come because personally I don’t see any use in all 3 of the ones shown.

I'm hoping they're just to test the waters too. I really like the idea of customizing our skill animations, and I also agree that I don't see much use in the gathering animations we did see.... Let us hope there will be more!

Getting the old animations back would doubtless be welcomed by many, but I can only begin to imagine the furore that would result from introducing unpopular new animations so that players could buy back the old ones through the Crown Store.

However, if these changes are introducing the ability to choose between different animations, then surely they would enable players to choose between an old animation and the new one. That would be the way to handle changes in core animations, not through the Crown Store - leave that for changes in cosmetic animations such as the ones shown tonight.

I thought about this too. I hope if they do go the “buy your animation back” route that people who’ve played before the animation change get it for free.

common practice would be to give everyone access to the animations that are already in the game and then starting to sell new animations made for that purpose.
outsourcing animations is cheaper than making them in-house and they can be sold for quite a profit.

I hope we can do this with jabs/sweeps but the stream wasn’t specific on which animations can be customized so let’s remain skeptical until ZoS clarifies the situation.

I think they said skills specifically. But when they showed only harvesting and wayshrine I got kindda worried that they oversold it or didn't pick their words carefully enough.

I agree, HOWEVER, in this case they "should" (let's not be coy this is ZoS so it could be "let's make money" pay for the old animation that everyone likes intentionally causing an issue and selling you back the solution like Ubisoft does) give us the base game jabs/sweeps for free but I'll remain skeptical based on previous experience. I would like to be able to customize animations, and a large amount of them so I see this as a largely positive feature as long as we get the old animations back for free.

It would be cool if they release the ones they showcased (the harvesting and different colored warp) in the crown store, and then released the old animations for jabs and flurry (edited the speed to account for jabs shorter time) for free as an encouragement to check out their crown store offer versions.

Alternatively, rightfully revert the new horrible flurry and jabs animations that nobody wants to be subjected to.

Stop encouraging ZOS to monetize everything, this is ridiculous. They're already making enough money from ESO Plus and the crown store. ZeniMax Media had a yearly revenue in FY2021 of 446 million USD. ZeniMax Online Studios had 116 million USD in revenue. They are doing fine. You know what isn't fine? The state of the game. The state of the servers. Performance. The amount of in-game assets that are in need of updating and up-resing after the over decade of game development ESO has seen. The countless amount of game systems that are missing obvious features and depth after years, so they are as wide as an ocean but as deep as a kiddie pool.

I could see serious complaints in PvP for custom skill animations. PvP learning curve is hard as it is, and a lot of it is recognizing what your opponent is doing based on visuals. I think there is a combat and gameplay advantage to having consistent audio and visual cues for skills.

Gimme the ORIGINAL bound armor animation!

I loved summoning a suit of armor, now its bland
Add a Scribing skill that works like Arcanist beam.

Veteran players have been alienated and disengaged from Overland since One Tamriel, due to the lack of difficulty, and pushed into dungeons and trials; the minority of content in the Elder Scrolls Online. We can't take the repetition anymore, fix Overland engagement for Vet players. I don't even care if it's not combat related anymore, just make Overland engaging again.
    ---
Overland difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 10 years. 6 paid expansions. 25 DLCs. 41 game changing updates including One Tamriel, an overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver & Gold as a "you think you do but you don't" - tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game. I'm bored of dungeons, I'm bored of trials; make a personal difficulty slider for overland. Make a self debuff mythic. Literally anything at this point.

I really do hope they can add the old Templar jabs back and for FREE. For now tho it does seem to be a way for them to yet make more money from cosmetics which is not really a bad thing.

However from what they did show - Harvesting. A complete copy from GW2, hey I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but there are differences between how harvesting works between the 2 games.

GW2 - You need to constantly buy/replace your gathering tools as they only have so many uses. I don't recall exactly how many, I think 50, if not 20. You can buy these tools from almost every vendor and they really are cheap. Just annoying to replace all the time and they do take up inventory space.

So to counter that they had "special" animation gathering tools which you bought for real cash with the advantage of being unlimited tools, they never break, thus never need replacing. They also brought new ones in all the time and I would buy them all. Even tho you only need 1 of each type (wood/ores/etc) I would buy them all so I could "theme" my characters. Example - my fire mage got the mining one that would cause lava to erupt when the strike hit.

ESO - We get the tools for free, they don't take up inventory space and they never break. This is cool, however they lack much animation (example, fishing rods look plain and boring) and what's worse - other people don't even see you gathering at all. To them you just look you are standing at a spot and are doing nothing like an idiot. How do I know this? As a crafter I get many surveys and as I gather those I see many other players doing the same and I can NEVER see them gather, they just stand there looking like they are doing nothing.

So my question is this - are they also updating the current gathering system to allow us to see other people gathering to give more incentive to sell these new animations? If so, will there be any impact on game performance because of it? Again, if so, is it really worth it just to sell new stuff? I guess the answer would be yes, since gathering is out in overland and usually a thing people do when solo. Which I guess is fine if the game is a "little laggy" when doing so.

    Your thoughts?

PS - this could somewhat explain the weird hiccups we have been getting recently when gathering - not actually gathering, the action stopping half way through and you have to click again (sometimes 2 or 3 times) to actually gather. My guess is they have already done something to the gathering spots months ago (when we first started seeing this happen) in prep for this new feature. Hopefully once released that can finally be fixed!

PPS - This could also explain why they pushed AWA so hard - free up some of the database stuff to make way for this. After all, our accounts are going to need to store somewhere what animations for what char for what combat skill/gathering node/whatever else they add this to, these said chars are using.

Your thoughts on that too - worth it?

My exact thoughts. Another way to milk the cash out of players. "Oh look, I need that skills color to match my outfit".

    And what about performance?

What about PvP aspect? Right now we can recognize classes immediately by the color of skills they are using, it won't be possible anymore and will be confusing.

IMHO it should be possible to disable this in options do I want to see those new fancy skills.

To my understanding, with rudimentary knowledge of coding, they did Sacrifice Flurry / Jabs Animation to make space in old consoles RAM to bring this new feature..

So this is now even more heartbreaking, knowing old Flurry / Jabs won't come back, even after the huge outcry.

I think we have to find someone with an pre U35 install to rip the files out and swap them for the current one, not sure if possible with ESO like in other games.
