Maintenance for the week of October 5:
• [COMPLETE] ESO Store and Account System for maintenance – October 8, 8:00AM EDT (12:00 UTC) – 12:00PM EDT (16:00 UTC)
its stupid because they have people that bought the game it should be their priority to help them fix it but when it comes down to it all they care about is money
I am having the same issue, a moderator suggested to rename the file "ProgramData" to "ProgramDataBackup" within the Launcher file itself. I didn't work for me. I'm on windows 8, tried running in windows 7 compatibility mode, running as admin and deleting / reinstalling the launcher setup 3-4 times, twice in the default download location. No matter if I use the desktop icon or going in and opening the file it will not open. It does appear in task manager and the icon on the bottom right hand of my start bar if I expand it but it goes away after about 30 seconds. I bought the 5 day early access expecting there to be server issues... but not errors trying to update the game or load into the launcher....
I can guarantee they want to get you in, it is pay2play, one of the benefits of that is they will constantly try to keep you happy. I'm having the same issue, so happiness level is definitely fading, but I have no doubt they are scrambling their arses off to figure all of this out.
I have been having the same issue and then I read a post (elsewhere in the support pages) saying that sometimes your internet security can interfere with the Launcher startup. They were quoting AVG as their issue and I use Microsoft Security Essentials but creating an exception for the ESO root directory in my internet security program's settings has solved the Launcher start-up problem for me.
Sure! I may not be able to give you exact instructions as this would vary depending on what internet security software you are running. I can certainly point you in the right direction though!
First, if you open your internet security program (you will probably need to right-click on its icon in your notification area of your desktop) and go into your settings menu, you will find an option saying something like 'Excluded Files and Locations.' It should then give you an option to 'Browse' for file locations. If you click the 'Browse' button, you then need to select which file you wish to exclude from the internet security (which will allow files in that folder to run without interference). I navigated to my ESO directory from here and added it to the exclusions list. After this, you should only need to save your changes and try to start-up the Launcher again. It worked first time for me.
I am having the same problem, i am using AVG, so i will try the exception-fix when i get home. But even though the launcher wont start, you can still play the game (at least i can) - Just go to the program folder and execute the ESO.exe file instead of the launcher (i don't remember if that is the exact file name, but something like that).
Yes, that was one of the first things I tried when I couldn't get the Launcher to start the other day. It's true, you can get into the game that way (and create a desktop link to it too, if you want!) but this won't work for me since I need to update my game client and cannot do so if the Launcher will not run. Incidentally, this also means I can't uninstall the game until the Launcher issue is fixed... Annoying, I know
Thankyou for your response and suggestion though. I hope the AVG work-around helps you. Happy gaming!
@maucher Yeah I know. It sucks. Alot. I've contacted the Support team and have given them 24hrs to provide me with game access (or at least the means to work around the Launcher issues) and suitable compensation for the inconvenience, after which time I will be pursuing a full refund.
Since they have not provided a service for which I have paid, I am entitled to a refund and will be encouraging any other loyal and disappointed Elder Scrolls fans to do the same.
It is a huge shame that the ESO developers have released a game in such an unfit state whilst expecting said fans to pay for (and not receive) a substandard product, not to mention the sub-par customer service employed to deal with it!
Here are some troubleshooting steps that will help to isolate the issue. Some of these steps, you may have done already. However, for the sake of the process of elimination, lets run through them. Then we can move on:
1.) Check Graphics Drivers.
2.) Check Windows Updates
3.) Disable or make exceptions in Antivirus Software
4.) Disable or make exceptions in Firewalls
If all that's good, then you would want to make sure the UserSettings.txt is healthy and in the right folder. It must be in:
My Documents/The Elder Scrolls Online/Live
*Note: Windows 8, might have it as simply "Documents"
If your not sure, let us know. We can help you repair it.
If issue persists, then you may want to reinstall the game with an Updated Version of the installer. Revisit the accounts page at https://account.elderscrollsonline.com/login and sign in. Once you've signed in, click the Download Game button.
If the issue STILL persists, you may have some background programs, interfering with the Launcher. To test this, try running the game in Selective Startup.
Selective Start Up
This will turn off the startup programs, and most of the services that the computer doesn't need to run. Let's give the following a try:
1) Click Start, and type msconfig on the Search Box
2) Right-click on the msconfig.exe program and choose Run as administrator
3) To place your computer into Selective Start up:
a. On the General Tab at the top, click on the Selective Startup Radio Button
b. Uncheck" Load startup items"
4) Click on the Services Tab at the top
a. On the Services Tab check the Hide all Microsoft Services check box at the bottom
5) Click the Disable all button at the bottom
6) Click Apply, then click OK
7) Restart your computer
When your computer comes up again, you will be in Selective Start Up. Try the game again, and see if you have different results. Once you have tried the game, if everything works fine, then one of the service or startup programs was causing the issues you were seeing.
Once you have finished this troubleshooting, you should turn selective startup back off. This is done by opening the msconfig window again, and selecting the Normal startup radio button. Click Apply, then click OK, and restart your computer again.
Here's what I did to get the launcher to work I completely uninstalled ESO as well as the download folder, deleted the old copy and cleaned it out of my trash can, the old Beta Launcher and ran a registery cleaner to clean up all those loose or broken shortcuts. https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
I use CCleaner there others out there that people use I then went through and did a Disk Cleanup after that I defragged the HDD.
Updated all my drivers and ran updates for Win7 64 rebooted computer.
After all that I went to my ESO account and downloaded a fresh copy and then installed it. afterwards made sure all the exceptions and trusted info was in my AVG and Windows firewall.
Installed Razer Game Booster https://www.razerzone.com/gamebooster installed that and selected ESO in RGB then clicked my desktop shortcut to run and was really surprised it launched and updated afterwards I hit play and I was in the game and the only crashes I've had is the Unknown Error which hopefully Zenimax is fixing.
Thank you for your suggestions. I have methodically worked through everything you suggested, including the selective start up, with no change in results. The text file is also exactly where you say it should be.
I have downloaded the new game client from the ESO website, which runs fine, but it wants me to install a new version of the game, which I cannot do as the previous version of the game is already on the hard drive and as such, there is not enough space for the new installation.
So... It seems that since the old Launcher won't run, I need a method of uninstalling the old game without using the Launcher! Any ideas?
(Please note that I have already tried the usual uninstaller process and uninstallation via CCleaner and I would rather not have to resort to formatting my gaming ssd drive... Which is looking more and more likely by the day)
