Hello!
I and many others don't agree with how Oakensoul is being treated and with the ring in itself being a good selling point for the High Isle DLC nerfing it feels pretty cheap.
As some people have said, this Mythic item is one if not the best item ever created to help people rise up and tackle new challenges and things usually outside of their own circle of comfort.
I do, however still see that it needs to be toned down in PvP, and looking at how ZoS has been working with high-impact sets these 2 last years I think there could be a semi-easy solution to both problems.
We currently got 2 sets, both new (Blackwood and High Isle) that actually differentiate between PLAYERS and non-player enemies.
These are:
- Bahsei's Mania: Increases your damage done to non-player enemies by up to 12% based on your missing Magicka.
and
- Pearlescent Ward: Grants you and up to 11 other group members Pearlescent Ward. This bonus persists through death. Pearlescent Ward increases Weapon and Spell Damage by up to 180 based on the number of group members that are alive. Current 180 Weapon and Spell Damage. Pearlescent Ward increases damage reduction from non-player enemies out of 66% based on the number of group members that are dead.
Since we know they do got the tech for this, it stands they should be able to implement it to a Mythic item too.
I'd like to see an Oakensoul with 2 effects.
The first effect would be the "
PvP" part of the Mythic, allowing people to use it to gain all the minor buffs.
- (1 item) While equipped, you are unable to swap between your Primary and Backup Weapon Sets and gain Minor Fortitude, Minor Intellect, Minor Endurance, minor mending, and minor heroism.
Nothing fancy here, you equip it and you get the minor buffs (I also included minor mending).
But now we'll have a 2nd effect which is the "
PvE" part of the mythic
- (1 item) Dealing damage to non-player enemies grants you a stack of Oaken for 10 seconds, up to 5 stacks. While you have 5 stacks gain Major Berserk, Major Courage, Major Brutality, Major Sorcery, Major Prophecy, Major Savagery, Major Force, Major Protection, and Major Resolve. Dealing damage to players removes 5 stacks of Oaken and you become Winded, and cannot trigger this effect for 2 minutes.
I think this should cover all the spots in both PvE and PvP but will leave the user with a small window of downtime outside of combat, it isn't perfect but every mechanic listed here already exists in the game and I'd imagine implementing old and existing mechanics are both faster and easier than making new ones from scratch.
The way of disabling the Oaken buff is taken straight from
Harpooner's Wading Kilt and the Winded debuff stopping you from getting new stacks comes from the
Dauntless Combatant set.
Others have recommended adding affixes that take Battle Spirit into account or just flat reduction of stats vs players and while those suggestions would work I wouldn't want to equip an item that made me WORSE vs a specific enemy type. That isn't the way gear should work, especially a
Mythic item
This is just my 2 cents, I don't want to see the current changes go live but I'd at least like to propose changes that could make both developers and players happy.
Oakensoul is a wonderful item for any and all that just want to take it easy and try some new things, may them be DLC dungeons, solo world bosses, Arenas, or dipping their toes in Trials.
