The Grindiest Grind You Ever Grinded! Let's Hear Your Stories!

So many of us have been there: that one weapon you really need from a dungeon, the lead you've been hunting forever, etc. So let's commiserate! I wanna hear your horror stories :D

The topic of this thread: share the tale of the worst grind you've ever had to endure in the game! What were you hunting, what was needed to find it, and how long did it take you?

I'll start things off! It's a bit early and I'm sipping coffee while I wait for maintenance to finish, so my memory might be blanking on an even worse occasion, but I think my worst grind was for a mythic lead. I spent 7 gods forsaken days in Bad Man's Hollow, grinding those bosses for about 3-4 hours a day, in order to get the Band of Water lead for the Wild Hunt mythic ring. As long as I live, I won't step another virtual foot in that friggin public dungeon. I'd rather sandpaper my taint than fight another boss in there after that. :'( :s

So what're your tales or woe and tribulation on the hunt for that coveted item? >:)

There was a grind of all the grinds years before the transmutation system, stickers book and curated drops... and it was called The Elusive Maelstrom Inferno Staff with - obligatory - sharpened trait.

Even BSW inferno wasn't that hard to get.

Only long time players can remember that :D

~400 runs of vMA to get a sharpened lightning staff.

    Pre-transmutation, Pre-reconstruction.

No 'grind' for anything in the last 3 years has come within an order of magnitude of that.

1h sword of the lich so I could back bar it in pvp. I needed two for dual wield sorc. Ended up settling for 1 sharp and 1 infused. Got them before you could trade dungeon gear - I think? I remember being able to trade monster helms before gear.

I think the grindiest grind in ESO must be Grand Overlord. Is the only grind that half way through I've balked. Doesn't help that is one of those things that I engaged with because I had to, not because I enjoyed it. If I enjoyed PvP it might have felt less of a grind, but is still a monumental time sink regardless.

Trailing a good distance behind monster trophies before AwA. I spent significantly longer hunting for this - right trophy on right character - than any other grind and in fact I did not complete the last one until by means of AwA it autocompleted, I was still missing the buzzing spine which had dropped for me once, just on the 'wrong' character.

vMA before transmutes is probably third, but I'm not sure; after what happened in April 2020 I try not to think about MA.

EDIT: I didn't realise that it wasn't limited to ESO.

Then it will be Claustrum on FFXI. Six years. After I finally upgraded it I quit the game.

Not a grind per se but I remember when we were going for Gryphon Heart back in Wolfhunter we unironically were a a point were we had to keep trying for a run where the shed Hoarfrost Synergy wasn't bugged. People just couldn't drop it. After progging the fight to the point were we were flawless it still tool about two weeks. That bug was the sole blockage to getting the trifecta at that point.

Grinding for a nirnhoned maelstrom inferno staff, before the era of transmutation. I farmed it hundreds of times. I lived in that arena for quite some time. The feeling I got when it finally dropped and I locked it was truly freeing.

Now we have transmutation and smart loot, so I was able to regrind for perfect versions of the staff and change it to a worthwhile trait (rip nirnhoned).

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

14h for anyone in my party to see a single 1h of SPC.

I needed it for my PvP healer. This was before the book got introduced, and I was not looking for any specific one and did not care about the trait. I just needed a random 1h to use with a shield.

My fiancé took 3-4 months for a single Tzogvin dagger. Again, full party, before the book. It took us literal months to get a single drop, then the game threw a second one at us in the few follow up runs.

You didn't specify ESO, so I'll tell the grindiest grind I ever ground into the ground on a hill....in WoW.

There's was this mount. A rusty wheely thing in mechagon:
    axj5mcpzwn9b.png

I wanted that bike so bad.
It only dropped in one place, off of a bird that spawned on a specific hill every hour or so.
    Drop rate was like .001%

For a solid three months, I logged in multiple times a day on 8 characters, all of whom were
parked on that hill. My girlfriend, of course, got it on her first try. :-P

    Three freaking months it took.

Ironically, shadowlands came out and I kinda hated it, so here I am. Playing ESO again.

I've actually had a relatively ok time grinding mythic and other leads. The worst of those bunch was probably the Font of Auriel. I had to of spent around 40 minutes per day for a month killing things for that to finally drop. But, having gotten every single lead in game, up to High Isle, I've never had too much trouble with them.

But, the worst grind for me was the Frost Atro trophy. I spent around 3 weeks, at 2-3 hours a day just killing the same loop of Frost Atros in Reaper's March.

The mummy trophy was also not easy, but at least a little less annoying than the Frost Atro one.

The years it took to become the crafter I am. Paying to reduce research times wasn't even a thing when I started the crafter grind. Like, it's not even a single thing that I get to go for and then complete, because the goalpost moves every time a new crafting style comes out. Only counting gear that can actually be crafted (so not including the outfit station-only style pages and such) I'm always like ten crafting styles from being able to craft literally anything in the game. That's my grind is to stay up on that.

I don't grind for anything actually as I know my limitations. I'm old, my reflexes are not what they used to be and I try to enjoy the game for being what it is for me, a pastime. Will I ever get a full stickerbook or one of the fancier title? Nope, but I also don't have the stress associated with working that hard at, what to me is supposed to be, a relaxing game. When I am not working at my real job, I don't need to come home to another is my point.

Life is too short to grind in a video game IMO, and I would much rather stop and smell (pick) the flowers along the way.

The grind to get the Enchanted Khajit Brazier to drop has been insane.

Almost four years of chasing it everyday (and used to be able to do all of them each day-now only one a day) and I haven't even sniffed a hint of it!

I'd hate to see the drop percentage rate, but I'm sure there's lots of zeros after the point involved.

Back in the day grinding in Orsinium to reach high enough CP to be able to take on veteran dungeons. That was so long ago that the CP gain wasn't nearly as steep as it is now. That however was somewhat fun because you were doing it with a friend, had a large area to run around in and had music on.

The worst grind I ever participated in was for the Harpooner's Wading Kilt in Shadowfen because that took me 7 hours of just standing in front of a node, staring at nothing to then press E or risk getting the node stolen from the hundreds of other players roaming the zone in search for free nodes. At least we were quoting Shrek to pass the time - y'know with it being in a swamp and all.

The Oakensoul lead I got after 1 hour 30minutes and I had a safebox to myself the entire time, so that wasn't actually that bad for me. There was one guy who was autolooting and trying to make me leave, but my ping was better than his so I got serious and made him waste his time trying to steal stuff from me by simply spamming E until it respawned. I also kept putting down the mystery meat memento so that he would eat the meat, just to annoy him back for him not letting others check the safebox and then doing a laugh emote at them.

Edit: Oh and that one time I tried to get a Lightning staff of the Ice Furnace set, because that used to be a good choice on a Warden build. The item set collection was a thing already, but the curated drops weren't, so I ended up getting literally every single other item that could possibly drop in that dungeon, including the mythic lead, before I got that Lightning staff after the build I was trying to make was already nerfed and the drops were curated, meaning I never actually got lucky enough, I had to wait for ZOS to rig the system and guarantee that I would get it lmao.

Oh and all the latest collectables from Public Dungeons, which got atrocious drop rates.

A light Kena helmet in divines back before transmutation and before monster helms were a guaranteed drop. Sooo many vWGT runs :(

Never ever! Zero grind! I'm in this game to chill lazily and grinding is completely banished from my way to play... >:)

I mentioned this a couple of times, but it took me about 3 years before I finally got a Maelstrom Inferno Staff...

I beat it for the first time in 2016 and I got the mace as my first reward. I ran it often back then, both to improve well enough to eventually go for a flawless run as well as to get an Inferno Staff. During one attempt to get flawless, the game crashed on me right after completing Stage 6 and even though I still got the bonus and everything, I didn't get the title :(

Eventually, I decided to go through Maelstrom only once a week cause I was getting a little burned out. And in 2019, I got the staff... from my weekly rewards...

I still have nightmares of that place...

Three months...I lead mol day after day to get Twlight Remedy Lighting staff. Back in the day, I helped a lot of tanks get thir akotash shield and weapons. It always dropped for me or at least every third run

    It's all pretty tamed really.

First one was vma bow years ago, was raining in staves which is made me create my first magicka character even. Took me around 30 clears to get one from weekly, a pain unknown now with sticker book present.

Last one was Alit Bezoar as a last trophy taking me actual months to get when particularly aiming for it. For an mmo I'd say we don't really have that much grinding especially now with all the timesavers.
