Pacrooti Lines:
  • Do any of these crates smell lucky to you?
  • Shall we get started? First you must select your crate and open it!
  • Pacrooti can see a lucky aura around you today. He is sure you will get something good! And all you need is a crate. You can purchase one from the store, and then we can begin.
  • Are you ready to reveal your rewards?
  • Jone and Jode, a bonus reward!
  • Well met, and good fortune to you!
  • Pacrooti would like to remind you that tips are appreciated. It is far easier for a mammoth to pass through the eye of a needle, if it is slightly greased, yeah?
  • This one hopes you will visit him again soon. Until then, may good fortune go with you!
  • Pacrooti admires your persistence!
  • This will do!
  • This one is impressed!
  • A marvelous reward.
  • Wonderful!
  • A blessing from the Divines!
  • Very lucky indeed!
  • Pacrooti is truly impressed!
  • There are many wonderful rewards that a crate could contain. In the gem store, you can see this magnificent selection and even buy rewards with the gems you collect.
  • Uncover your rewards to collect them. Some rewards are better than others, and some are so valuable they make Pacrooti's claws tingle!
  • An auspicious day! You have surpassed every other player! Congratulations!
  • Pacrooti has seen many lucky players, but none have done so well as you, my friend!
  • Sparkly Gems! Very lucky indeed!
  • Ahhh.
  • Ah! Ooooh!
  • Ha haa!
  • <yawn>
  • Ha ha ha!
  • This one wonders, could there be anyone more lazy than the person who named the fireplace?
  • You must choose a crate to open.
  • This one recommends that you purchase a crate from the store.
  • Pacrooti wishes he had such treasures!
  • You are on a winning streak! Why would you stop now?
  • There are many spectacular rewards that a crate could contain. You can view this excellent selection by previewing a crate.
  • Many players have done well today, but you have beaten them all, my friend!
  • You are the greatest player in the history of this game. Pacrooti wonders if you have any tips for him?
  • Sparkly Gems! Very sleek!
  • Mmh hm hm.
  • Mmm?
  • Ha!
  • <yawn 2>
  • Haaaa!
  • This one is not always a good sleeper, but he is willing to put in a few extra hours every day to practice. It is just the kind of hard worker Pacrooti is.
  • An excellent crate, my friend!
  • This one must admit that he is a little impatient. You must select your crate and open it to get started!
  • Sparkly Gems! Quite valuable!
  • Mmm hmm!
  • Mmmmm?
  • Ha.
  • <yawn 3>
  • Hmmmm.
  • Did you know that pregnant dogs are filled with puppies?
  • This one finds it funny that a bird is the only animal you can throw, and still be helping it.
  • Welcome back, good friend! It is always a pleasure to talk nonsense with someone, and to have his nonsense respected.
  • May luck follow you.
  • Will you try again? This could be your lucky day!
  • Why not?
  • Congratulations!
  • Tip-top!
  • A spotless choice!
  • <Kinda Mean Laugh>
  • Has steeping in death for so long dulled your appetite for life? Claim your reward and see if that thrills you into action once more.
  • Marvelous rewards!
  • Pacrooti is waiting!
  • Sparkly Gems! Very nice!
  • Ahhhhh!
  • Hooo hoo hoo!
  • Hmm hmm hmm!
  • Pacrooti has three simple rules for life: When something is empty, fill it. When something is full, empty it. When something is itchy, scratch it.
  • Select your rewards, my friend.
  • Wabbacat! A bonus reward!
  • Pacrooti is pleased to see you!
  • Pacrooti welcomes you! So much of his business is carried out through couriers, it is nice to finally place names with faces!
  • Farewell.
  • This one invites you to try again!
  • Not bad at all!
  • Admirable!
  • Exceptional!
  • Sweet Riddle'Thar!
  • Simply breathtaking!
  • A monumental reward!
  • Choose a crate, my friend.
  • Select the crate, and we can begin.
  • There are no crates remaining. Purchase more if you wish to try your luck again!
  • Jone and Jode! Do you realize we under attack?
  • Kindle and burn!
  • A wonderful selection of rewards!
  • Your luck amazes Pacrooti! Perhaps he needs to shuffle better.
  • Greetings, my friend! Are you ready for excitement and outstanding rewards?
  • Ooo, did you see that? You can only receive one unique reward, so you get sparkly gems instead! These are very valuable.
  • Jone and Jode! You have opened more crates than any other player on this day!
  • My friend! You are now the greatest player in the history of this game! You should be very proud!
  • Pacrooti sees that you are ready to play! Excellent!
  • Sparkly Gems! My compliments!
  • Ahem.
  • Mmm hmmm.
  • Ha haaa.
  • <humming>
  • Hm hmmm!
  • An excellent selection!
  • I got what you need.
  • You want something special, yes?
  • Pacrooti tries to keep things simple. What he will never understand is why others insist on making them so complicated. Also women. Pacrooti will never understand women.
  • Your rewards are ready!
  • Bright moons, a bonus reward!
  • Greetings, my good friend!
  • Ah, my friend returns! This one thinks there is nothing better than a good friend, unless it is a good friend bearing moonsugar treats.
  • Pacrooti thanks you, and hopes to see you soon!
  • Another go-around, my friend?
  • A fine selection.
  • Good choice!
  • An exquisite selection.
  • Bright moons! Excellent!
  • Magnificent!
  • An unparalleled reward!
  • Pacrooti is jealous of your good fortune!
  • Very nice! You're not cheating are you?
  • Pacrooti will help you open a crate which contains special rewards. Some of these are so spectacular, just thinking of them makes Pacrooti's fur stand on end!
  • Sparkly gems can be traded for special rewards in the gem store!
  • This one is please to inform you that you are his number one player today! You have beaten all others!
  • No one has ever had a better run of luck then you, my sleek friend! This will be hard to top!
  • Which crate do you choose?
  • One crate there. Select it, my friend.
  • Sadly, you have no more crates. But you can always purchase more!
  • Pacrooti really enjoys those small flatbreads baked by the High Elves. They are like tiny, edible plates.
  • Make a selection to reveal your rewards!
  • Heart of Mara, a bonus reward!
  • Fortune favor you, my friend!
  • Bright moons! Pacrooti welcomes you and prays that the Divines grant you luck and great fortune!
  • It has been Pacrooti's pleasure, as always, my good and faithful friend!
  • Time for a repeat performance?
  • Perfectly respectable.
  • That's a good one!
  • Most fragrant!
  • A lovely sweetmeat!
  • Just outstanding!
  • You'll not find better!
  • Exceptional rewards!
  • Amazing! How do you do it, my friend?
  • Most crates contain four rewards, but sometimes you will get a special fifth reward!
  • Select your crate and we can begin. Most crates contain four rewards, but sometimes you will get a special fifth reward!
  • The gem store is a special place where sparkly gems can be redeemed for valuable rewards!
  • You are today's top player, my friend! You should feel very fortunate!
  • Pacrooti has never seen such a magnificent display of good fortune! You have set a new record!
  • Choose a reward!
  • Sweet Riddle'Thar, a bonus reward!
  • This one welcomes you back!
  • This one welcomes you, and wishes you good luck! Pacrooti thinks we place too high a value on the luck of the early bird. Isn't the early worm even luckier?
  • Do not be a stray, my friend. You will always be a welcomed sight!
  • This one wishes you great luck!
  • This could be useful.
  • My compliments!
  • You've done well!
  • First rate!
  • Superlative!
  • Pacrooti is still waiting. This one has endless patience.
  • This one thinks you may have fallen asleep. Select your crate and open it, and then we can begin!
  • When Pacrooti was young, he often ran in circles trying to catch his own tail. Then he decided it was much easier to catch his friends' tails. Pacrooti had fewer friends after that.
  • This one finds it frustrating to know all the answers because nobody ever asks Pacrooti any questions.
  • Pacrooti welcomes you! Are you interested in excitement and valuable rewards? This one can help!
  • Return soon, my sleek friend. This one is always pleased to see you!
  • Pacrooti's good luck must be rubbing off on you!

Now we're in 2022 and it's still toxic.

"Pacrooti admires your persistence!" is probably the most psychologically manipulative line and the absolute vile people behind these loot boxes know exactly what they are doing. Targeting the vulnerabilities that exists in the majority of our psyches (some are able to counter/resist these innate social pressures better than others).

I do hope the US justice gets smart and follows Belgium's example. Write your congressman and all of your elected officials.

I want to continue supporting the development team and the artists who inspire us all (not the investors) and there are ways to do it that are not damaging to the most vulnerable.
Whatever Pacrooti is he is not a necromancer who brings 6 year old threads back to life.

Because this is no longer relevant, right?

With the news spreading of the bans of loot boxes in some countries along with the criticism of a certain recently released Blizzard title and even Asmongold revisiting the old Torulf Jernström seminar video, this topic is still quite fresh (and reeking) and so that's why I landed here; on this still very relevant thread.

It is never too late to resist against normalizing bad (and harmful) concepts.

I do like Pacrooti because him being a scammer is part of his personality. Of course this doesn't justify anything and to anyone who isn't in the know about shady Khajiit merchants he can definitely be manipulative, but I hope Pacrooti will stay in the game even if lootboxes are outlawed someday.

The only time I deal with him is when we get free crates so I never really noticed any toxicity.

    Favorite Foods and Potions
    https://media.giphy.com/media/3otPoTggaYFNd1FdAI/giphy.gif
    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Yes! The time commitment is absolutely absurd. Not even bonus endeavors earned for us ESO+. They didn't skirt anything. They threw a bandaid on their bullet wound. Still unethical. Right now, they are still fighting to make this normalized but us OG 1999 MMOers are not falling for it. The game industry deserves to make money; even though it's the artists and developers that MAKE OUR GAMES that are the first to get LAID OFF. There are honest, unharmful ways of being a successful gaming company but it looks like we need laws to restrict these companies. Yeah.. life isn't fair and a lot of that is because good people let greedy people 'skirt on by'.

In all seriousness ZOS already skirted around the issue by introducing endeavors, even though you would need to grind a whole year to buy one of those extra shiny mounts.

They only introduced endeavors because that is Microsoft's policy. All gambling crate content must be available through gameplay means as well, say the Microsoft overlords. This doesn't specify how obtainable these items should be though.

Personally I think one radiant apex per 90 days (roughly one crate season) should be the norm for seal gains. You'd have to not spend seals on anything else just to get one out of 3 of those radiant apex mounts. They'd still be plenty special, but at least you'd get to pick up some smaller items along the way while saving up for one of those big mounts. But right now you can't even get a whole regular apex reward in that amount of time. I wouldn't exactly call that "available through gameplay means" if I was a judge...

Probably an unpopular opinion, but this is where some sort of government-enforced control is needed.

Depending on your age, most of us do remember a time when this wouldn't be an unpopular one. But in today's world, having Big Brother step in and take over is not considered ideal or in a person's best interest.

It is absolutely absurd how invested you have to be in endeavors if you only use endeavors to buy things directly from the loot boxes. Microsoft likely still approved this measure calling it good enough (likely to skirt any oncoming law entanglements as our government continues to explore loot box legality measures that could be taken) and not for any ethical reason. So, writing your elected officials (State Representatives if you are in the US) is still the best course of action for the concerned gaming community.

Microsofts policy doesn't apply to existing content. That was all hashed out when the sale was going through. It only applies to future projects and projects currently still in the works but unpublished. We got endeavors shortly after many European countries changed their laws for loot containers. Endeavors makes it so ESO is in compliance with those new laws.

Yes, and yet DUI's still happen on a highly regular basis to the point that there is an entire legal profession that was borm around defending these specific cases. Making DUI's illegal doesn't necessarily prevent deaths it just makes the consequences of a possible violation highly substantial. It's deterence not prevention.

That is a flawed notion. It reminds me of the "bad guys will get guns so we should not outlaw the owning of AR-15's"..

There are many things bad people will still do regardless of the law of the land. But this is derailing the topic.

Having loot boxes outlawed will take gambling out of our games; and those who need to feed their addiction will go elsewhere, to other legal gambling institutions. It doesn't mean we shouldn't shrink the sphere of impact gambling has.

I don’t see anything “toxic” or manipulative about his dialogue. One may find it amusing or annoying.

Loot boxes are not my favorite way to purchase anything, but I have enjoyed it on rare occasion when there when I wanted a number of the lower tier rewards from particular seasons. I do see any validation for them being illegal. Maybe a minimum purchase age? But the game is rated 18+ and if parents feel it is appropriate for their children to play and spend money on, I don’t think that should be my business.

By no means defending all that ESO does. I’m still mad about how AWA was handled. I dis as how anyone should if they’re not happy with a company or product: I spoke with my wallet and returned my preorder and cancelled my sub and have hardly paid since. Please note that I am NOT saying that people should not purchase or play ESO, just that it is the appropriate action if one strongly disagrees with policies, etc. while trying to drag the law into it and take it away from everyone is not right.

I come by the forums yet on occasion because I would like to come back at some point… It would be easier for me if there was some acknowledgment of AWA communication being, well, terrible, and some clarification of policies… but companies don’t always do as we would wish whether in the case of character data or loot boxes; we must each make our own choices as best for us.

I don’t see anything “toxic” or manipulative about his dialogue....

There is a stark difference between "I don't see anything toxic" and "There isn't anything toxic"

When I refer to Pacrooti's dialog's toxicity it is in reference to its connection to his receptiveness to loot box outcomes and his responses to the player's engagement of loot boxes. His dialog was written with the very specific purpose of manipulating the player. Outside of loot box engagement, I find his dialog charming and appreciable to the khajiiti aesthetic.

Only crates I open are free ones. And I don't find Pacrooti toxic because I don't have voice volume on at all; his lines aren't subtitled.

As for the government getting involved, I personally don't care though in many ways more oversight is not a very good idea.

It has nothing to do with relevance. The posting conventions on this forum, and many others, is you don't resurrect a thread that has been dormant for a long period of time. The thread you resurrected had been dormant going on 6 years. The correct way to address its subject would have been to create a new thread and post a reference back to the original thread.

As to Pacrooti I don't see him or his language as the problem. Someone who has gambling problems might be affected by his dialog but the root issue is the gambling itself. You could have Pacrooti telling players how bad gambling is and it would have no effect on someone with gambling addiction. As to the casual gambler who can take it or leave it I think most see the dialog as humorous with the remainder not caring what Pacrooti has to say. In summary rather than get upset over what Pacrooti says I think your energies would be better applied at the removal of gambling from the game itself. It is something I could certainly get behind and wish Congress would outlaw or that the states regulate like they do casinos.

Until today I had no idea that Pacrooti had anything more than a few amusing Kahjiit style lines.

I don't buy crates, I am very rarely bothered to have Twitch on in the background to even get free drops. Obviously you are deeply worried about loot crates, so why not just never go to that page?

This game is marketed to a "Mature" audience and as such I believe everyone has a right to play it however they want. If you don't go to the crate page, Pacrooti will not have a chance to offend you.

People with addictions be it gambling, drinking, drugs or whatever will always find a new source if one dries up! Unfortunately that is the nature of addiction. Removing crates will likely just send the people with tendencies towards a gambling issue to somewhere new to gamble.

I have friends who really look forward to a new crate season, they buy a few crates, have some fun, get excited by their luck or jealous of other's luck. Guild chat is alive with chat over the new items. NEVER has anyone ever said "By the way do you think Pacrooti is toxic?" NEVER!

Well, that was me politely disagreeing with you. ;) I don’t think some prerecorded lines of dialogue are enough to qualify as manipulative. I mean, does anyone really think his saying you have a “lucky aura” or various other things means that you have improved RNG for your next crate or that day or whatever? If people want to buy crates, they’ll buy them, if they don’t, they won’t.

Now I have seen clever advertising techniques that influenced me toward buying something, but it is still my choice and if I found it something I didn’t want to deal with, I’d stop using the platform. I find it insulting to suggest I shouldn’t have such choice; that should be one of the fundamental differences between being an adult and being a child.

I still have yet to be told or conclude a single good reason that necroing threads is an issue whatsoever so long as the content of the necroed thread is still relevant. The reason why I chose to first necro that old thread (and why I support thread necroing) was to put a spotlight on just how long this has been an issue.

As to the rest; yes.. in the long and short of it, the banning of loot boxes in all video gaming formats aside from those games that are essentially "online casinos" is what inspires me to continue to fight against the normalization of this practice.
