How do you have fun questing?

Hi everyone!

From time to time, I stop doing vet content and PvP to try something more immersive, like questing.
So I basically set a goal, and begin my adventure. Last time was about one psijic glove motif, which lead me to do the entire summerset quest line.

Well.. I ended up getting my gloves, which was cool, but gameplay wise was an awful experience, simply grinding everything down with nothing coming nearly close to become a challenge.

So ye, should I strip all my gear before questing? What do you do to have fun questing?

By the way, why do we have a post done almost one year ago about open world content, with nearly 4k comments, and yet not even a concern note from devs?

I have fun with the stories and the lore and the details of the world involved in questing, not so much the combat. As long as it's interesting I don't mind if it's not challenging. And it makes for good first-person screenshots of boss fights.

i actually try and minimize questing as much as possible. eso's writing and stuff is great and all and we LOVE to talk about how good a story a lot of quests have but unfortunately the way those stories are presented is always so bland with zos always having been committed to avoiding full cutscenes for whatever reason

and don't say it's because being able to stand around and still use your wasd keys while npcs babble at eachother with stock animations is mOrE iMMeRsIvE because it really isn't

And here I am thinking that the best thing about this game is the lack of cutscenes - so overused in other games. I just don't like that sort of stuff at all.

When questing, I prefer to focus on the nuances of the quest and NPCs and, frankly, combat that is geared toward a low level player is just fine. If I want big combat challenge, there are plenty of places in game to find that. I prefer smelling the roses and admiring the butterflies when questing or traveling overland. :)

When I quest, I go all in on the power fantasy of being the strongest there is. My character plays stupid even when they could easily resolve a situation right then and there, just to see how things play out.

Soloing dungeons and world events also makes for quite an adventure.

Realistically what I do isn't for everyone. Probably best to have a roleplay setup via the armory system to make things more challenging for ya, maybe use sets that have cool proc effects are not very strong.

    Favorite Foods and Potions
    https://media.giphy.com/media/3otPoTggaYFNd1FdAI/giphy.gif
    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

If the writing is good, I'll enjoy myself. If the writing is bad, I will not enjoy myself because the gameplay loop is not enough to satisfy me anymore. It's just too easy now - even when I do not spend my CP, even if I don't use food or potions.
Sadly ESO's writing is average at best and only the exceptional quest here or there actually gets me hooked.

I have fun listening to the npc's dialogue. Some are better than others, but for me it's not about the combat. I'd probably look into doing some coordinated group activities if that's what I wanted because it's been my experience in other MMOs that challenging combat is tied to grouping, but I'm happy playing ESO solo.

That's why choice is important, choice which is found in all other areas of the game so that players of different interest can have fun in the same content. It is a shame that the largest piece of content in the game doesn't offer it, which for me robs any story of any sense of purpose because, why do the people need a hero to save the day from a world ending event when all that's needed is some random person to press a button.

I've never really connected story/questing and "challenge". So I'm fine with however difficult or not-difficult the story quests are.

(enough years of playing games where the cutscenes had no connection to how the actual boss fights went helped with that. Probably also helps that I'm not a 'competitive' gamer, so my builds aren't min-maxed/optimised/meta in the first place. No idea what my DPS is, doing rotations on a target dummy sounds mind-numbingly boring. /shrug)

As other people have said the quests themselves are the point, playing through the storylines and seeing where it leads, getting to know the NPCs (althougth most of them you'll never see again) and learn a bit more about the lore and the world. Combat is often (but not always) part of the story but the appeal isn't to see if you're able to beat it, that's almost always a foregone conclusion, it's to see what the outcome of that is within the story.

Pump more points into Health and fewer into Stamina or Magicka. Think of the balance between Health and Stam/Mag as the game's difficulty slider. If necessary, try putting equal points into Stamina and Magicka to help keep your damage low in comparison to your Health. Once you find your sweet spot, save that setup to the Armory so you can go back to it easily.

I miss challenge in most MMOs. They don't offer it as much anymore.. and less and less incentive to be social and so we become socially inept and chest-thumping combative instead of making any effort to understand one another.

The lack of technical challenge within story quests in MMORPGs is the reason for social decline?

I don’t role play, but I have 12 characters I like to create backgrounds for. Every chapter I choose one to focus on for the bulk of the year (but I also have like my mains that I do difficult content with and crafter and such I play year-round.)

It’s always fun in January when I decide which character to use. I also don’t let the region dictate it. Like I had a Nord do Elsweyr and a High Elf do Greymoor.

As it currently stands, I just don't... use my skills on bosses and slowly click the basic attack a few times. That usually ensures that I get to hear their dialogue. It kind of sucks, yes, and I've tried everything else like not allocating CP or removing gear, etc. But that gets annoying very quickly, because I need to switch from questing to more challenging content all the time.

I do really wish for difficulty options of some sort, but I'm afraid of a monkey's paw type situation, where ZOS misunderstands everything and just makes the game super hardcore for everyone with no options. And when people understandably complain, they'd say "see, nobody likes higher difficulty" and then make ESO even easier than it is now and close this topic for good. I'm just looking at the AWA implementation, which, you know...

I'd gladly take some sort of a toggle in the settings that would just cut my stats by 60% or something. But, that's all been talked about a million times in hundreds of threads.

I usually sneak as much as possible and avoid fights whereever I can. I have enough CP and don't need XP. Fights are a annoying let down anyway (Mobs snaring you and stuff). I usually just pick up bits and pieces of the story as I go, because I know I won't fail.
