Forum notifications should not be "all or nothing"

I made the mistake of reading posts in some of the more active threads recently, and now I just get repeatedly spammed by email notifications when the threads get (frequent) new replies. Any forum software worth using allows its users to follow specific threads only, but with this forum software it's all or nothing. The only way to avoid getting notifications for threads you're no longer interested in is to turn off notifications for all threads.

In other words, there's simply 1 global preference: "Notify me when people comment on discussions I've participated in.", with an email checkbox and a popup checkbox. This means that to stop notifications for some threads, I also have to stop notifications for threads I'm still interested in.

I just had to temporarily turn off all notifications, because the PC NA maintenance thread is getting a ridiculous amount of activity, with several new replies every minute!
