So....I've found I'm unable to use Petrify right after stunning with Shield Charge. The skill is dark and I cannot activate it. However, I can use Burning Talons. Is there.....some reason for this? I've been experimenting with keeping a foe stunned/immobile for a bit of time...and was surprised to find I couldn't use Petrify. Thanks for any insight.

Shield charge is stunning your opponent. You should NOT be able to use Petrify on a stunned or CC immune opponent. Once you break free from a stun, you have CC immunity for I believe 6 seconds (that was the number at one point). In many ways, its actually a great feature of petrify. It goes grey on a CC immune opponent, so you can always use it as an indicator. Once it goes back to normal, you know you can stun them again (preferably with a well timed burst combo).

Talons are different. They immobilize and opponent. You can be stunned and immobilized at the same time as they are difference mechanics. A stun requires a break free, an immobilize requires a dodge roll. That's the main reason fossilize is such a good CC. Not only is it unblockable and undodgeable, It requires your opponent to break free from the stun then roll dodge from the immobilize to be completely free from its effects. A lot of players dont realize that and fail to react appropriately. And even if you do react appropriately, its excellent pressure on a players stamina bar.

Pro tip, don't fight an enemies health bar, fight their stamina bar.

I'm not sure if this answers you question specifically, but a while ago, a global CC cooldown was implemented. At least in PVE, there were some tanks who would use their crowd control abilities in place of taunts, as CC can be area of effect whereas taunts are all single target. As CC didn't have a limiter on it, mobs would just be stuck in place indefinitely.

ZoS changed this so that enemies could be stunned, but then had CC immunity for a short period so that one can't just stunlock enemies in place indefinitely. If your abilities don't seem to be stunning enemies properly, this is likely what's going on.

If you straight up can't activate the ability, there's something else going on. There might be a shared ability cooldown, or a non-cancelable animation in the way. It's also worth double checking that you have resources for the ability when you try to use it. If you don't have enough resources to cast a particular ability, it might be that your character is just waiting until resource recovery kicks in and gives you enough resources to cast the next ability (stamina being the resource in this case).

Thank you....I think I'll try this: Stun enemy 1 with shield charge, attempt Petrify on enemy 2. I kept waiting for the skill icon to go bright but dang...it took a long time. And yes...I was almost full up on resources..so I don't think that was it. I'll report my findings in a bit.

Petrify and rune cage are the only cc abilities I can think of that will gray out when an enemy is cc immune.

Starting... A long time ago, stun immunity became separate from root immunity (you used to be able to be rooted basically forever before root immunity was a thing)

So shield charge stuns, they are then briefly immune to stuns (which prevents use of petrify since it's "primary" ability is the stun, even though it has secondary effects.) Talons works because the immunity for root is separate and has its own timer (with little or no visual cue that I'm aware of.) Talons first effect is damage, unlike petrify, so it CAN be used on root immune targets (though it obviously doesn't root in that case.)

You may notice petrify is blocked from use a LOT in pvp, mainly because many people use immovable potions which provide 15+ seconds of both root and stun immunity in addition to the normal immunity.

I do wish they would give Petrify an effect even on immune targets, like talons.

at least when that works correctly lol

and i think cc immunity is a base duration of 7 sec, but that can be extended with CP slottables

I think you are right on that. Both are primary stuns, both have secondary effects that are conditional on the stun. Rune cage does damage if the stun goes the full duration. Petrfy and morphs are conditional on the stun "ending" for any secondary effects, so in either case, the stun needs to land, and it cant land on a CC immune opponent.

I actually dont. Fossilize is an insanely powerful stun. Despite the shorter range, it is way better than say rune cage. Aside from the fact that with fossilize, you get a stun, an immobilize, and magic damage, the greyed out skill bar is really useful, especially in 1v1 scenarios.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the 6 seconds I said. It was a guess based on an old memory. LOL.

Its somewhere in that neighborhood, and I think it has been adjusted more than once over the years.
