Camera Issue, Update 33

  • BlackRoseWaltz
the fact that this *still* isn't fixed after several patches is concerning. i was only mildly concerned at first but its been 2 weeks and we've had several patches and still this is an issue. maybe we're just a minority in the sense that we use custom camera angles? we've already established that it only happens to people who change from the default camera angle, and that update 33 caused it, but we don't know why and frankly its pissing me off that i can't play until this gets fixed. i don't care how many "we're sorry we screwed up" bonuses you put out, zeni, i don't mean to be rude, but think of it from this angle - what use is giving is free bonuses, like gold and xp scrolls *if we can't even play the game to utilize them* i mean thanks, i appreciate you're trying to make up for it - but unfortunately that doesn't solve *the problem at hand*. and that's what i'm pointing out. i've read nearly every patch note since and not a single one has even addressed that this is an issue and its irritating and concerning. what gives? why the silence? can we get an update? its been 2 and a half weeks now.
Whatever it is, I want it painted black.

I have not noticed this being an issue on PS server.

Is it possible that it is due to an add-on? I’m not sure how though.

I have changed the camera zoom for both first person and third person, and also pull the camera view back for PvP. It appears to be working the same as always.

:s It happens to me the most when running up stairs. I’m ready for this to be fixed.

Speaking of stairs, I tried to block this memory but when we ran Rockgrove a little bit ago, final boss, spiral staircase, camera rapidly switching between first and third person... fun time.

In another post, someone mentioned Vertical Offset has an impact and may provide some relief.

I usually have mine set to -60, but moving this above -50 helped some. I kept running into the issue in some cases though, so I think I'm up to -30 now.

no, its not, we've established it has nothing to do with addons - its only for people who decide to alter the default camera angle from the over the shoulder thing to some other angle, be it closer, farther, larger field of view... that kind of thing. and these are all basegame functions. its affecting people regardless of whether they have addons or not.

a positive or negative impact? i remember messing with my vertical offset when i first set the camera to my desired spot, but i don't remember by how much. i'll have to check. i think its around 25 for me

actually i might not have given enough context, what i mean is its not merely a camera zoom thing, we mean altering the full on position of the default camera - like panning it via horizontal or vertical offset like @Eiagra said. zooming is something you can do in the game without altering the camera angle - we're talking about going into settings and physically moving the camera from its default point - which has nothing to do with addons, its a function that's been in the game since release - its just most people don't seem to utilize it, apparently which might be why this issue isn't as well known as it probably should be.

ok i did a little experimenting and it turns out that this actually does occur even with default camera settings, thing is you don't notice it as often because the camera doesn't get close enough to collide with your own character's hitbox or whatever, and there is a point where the camera is supposed to go into first person when you zoom in close enough but that's only when you are adjusting the camera manually, not when panning around during regular gameplay - it shouldn't happen there. clearly these parameters have been changed or bugged somehow, because people are complaining about how when their camera hits these thresholds it swaps to first person - and i have to agree this wasn't an issue before update 33, because the camera would simply zoom in without swapping to first person. i would make a video showcasing this problem, but i don't know how to do that nor do i have any kind of capture software beyond taking screenshots and i don't think screenshots are going to depict the problem here... i tend to have the camera hovering p much right behind my character, as close as comfortably possible with the field of view increased so i can *really* get into the shoes of my character while still being able to see everything from a third person perspective - i guess its just an immersion thing for me... problem is that's so close that i seem to experience the camera bug thing more often - especially when performing stealth missions and gameplay that requires you to sneak near walls and in the shadows and absolute corners of places - the camera never used to swap to first person during these moments and that third person angle has become a huge benefit to performing these missions properly - nothing needed to be changed and i can't fathom what was changed that could cause this camera bug to pop up - and see this wouldn't seem to be that big a deal to most because most don't mess with the camera settings anyway as far as my consensus of going around and asking friends who play the game goes, but clearly its not just me with this problem.
Whatever it is, I want it painted black.
  • BlackRoseWaltz
you know what, here lemme just give you my camera angles so you can see the issue. set horizontal offset to 82, vertical offset to 36, increase field of view to 108 and run around in any enclosed area or anywhere with walls and you'll see our problem firsthand. *that's* what we're talking about and that issue was not there until update 33 dropped. has nothing to do with addons, i've already played around both with and without addons - none of which affect camera angles or anything, and even then this wasn't an issue with or without addons for the longest time before update 33 dropped. this is the problem. i legit cannot play the game under these conditions.

Just an impact -- the lower this setting, the more likely it seems to occur. -60 was an all-the-time thing, -50 and -40 was not-as-often but still happened, and I'm currently at -30 which doesn't seem to be impacting me yet. The lag is preventing me from playing at the moment, so haven't done much further testing.

fair enough, and yeah i kind of noticed that too, but it makes sense because the camera isn't colliding with as many surfaces when its raised. i tend to lower it so its closer to my character, and i kind of got used to that angle ever since, and its never been an issue until update 33.

i may have seen at least one post where someone stated that they had this issue on console but i also may be severely mistaken. i wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't affecting console for whatever reason. as for *why*, well. that's why we're here, isn't it? trying to figure out what the problem is. it does seem that the issue isn't isolated to the cameral merely colliding with surfaces, it does seem to happen only in certain thresholds where the camera is positioned close to the player character, so i'm assuming its a confusion of collision thing where the camera collides with the surface of an object and the player character's hitbox in some fashion. it might not even be the hitbox, i'm not sure, because for me at least the collision point where the camera does this swapping thing seems to be rather large - but i'm also the kind of player to do up close and personal stealthy vampire "always stay hidden in corners" gameplay where i kind of need to have my camera close due to detection reasons, so i can see where npcs are and gauge their line of sight - which goes to show this hasn't been an issue for me for a long time now, with and without mods, i've had these angles untouched since i first changed them, and have had them for at least 2-3 years maybe, 2 minimum - it was only when update 33 dropped that that suddenly changed and its become near impossible to play the way i've gotten used to playing anymore - and it bugs me because i love this game and have spent a ridiculously stupid amount of money on it - including preordering high isle.

Checked my settings for camera on console and we just have a bunch of sliders, no numbers, so it would very hard to replicate.

There aren’t as many console players here for sure, but I have not heard anyone in zone chat or guild chat mention any problems with the camera. In fact, my guildies were like me - saying how smooth things went this patch.

Remember that if I want to have guild text chat then I have to have zone text chat on too. All the time. No mention of any bugs this patch whatsoever. Dungeon group finder is working, mail is working. Odd that you guys are having these issues and we are not.

ah, that might explain it - so it definitely is just an issue on pc then - on pc we have an entirely different UI for mouse and keyboard vs controller, and access to both versions of the UI, which seem to have different versions of the setting, the mouse and keyboard version of the UI, where you press esc to access the pause menu, in settings for the third person camera, there are numbers associated with the position of the camera and its sliders. in my frustration with the issue i may have neglected to ascertain whether the numbers i posted for my camera position were positive for negative. i'll have to recheck.
Whatever it is, I want it painted black.
  • BlackRoseWaltz
and yeah, i did neglect it. so for me its merely an increased FOV which is 108 for me, adjusted horizontal offset -81, and lowered vertical offset -36. those are my settings.
    FOV 108
    Horizontal Offset -81
    Vertical Offset -36
those are the only settings I've changed, and this is where i experience the camera bug thing the most. can't even stand near a wall without the camera clipping into first person. it sucks, because i love being that one shady character and hugging walls and corners XD

Console doesn't have vertical offset settings, so if it is related to that then its unlikely (does have horizontal offset)

I don't know if anyone/everyone has figured this out, but i had "field of view" on both first person and third person set to max (130). I reset to defaults then put the fov back and the camera switching stopped.

trust me it still happens its just that the camera's not colliding with that hitbox point close to your character, you gotta hit a wall at *just* the right angle and it will still switch even with default settings. - its not supposed to do that. its supposed to just pan really close.

Xbox NA and have camera position, offset, and my interface scaled NOT to default.

Noticed while dueling last night (both of us were on stamsorcs) that trying to heavy attack into a crystal weapon or medium attack weave after a dizzying swing were incredibly inconsistent and would seem to swing through the target. Furthermore, instant cast skills were not going off when they were seemingly in range.

Made an account just to comment on this issue. I've been away from the game for a year, came back to this issue, rendering my game unplayable. And yes, I, too, have a custom camera setup with vertical offset. No camera issues while mounted. I was fnally in an ESO mood, but I just can't play like this.

    Camera settings:
First person - rot speed 28, FOV 104, bob 100
Third person - rot speed 60, FOV 104, horizontal position 0, horizontal offset 0, vertical offset -60

    FOV changes enabled, smoothing enabled.
