Speed running dungeons is not fun anymore.

Speed running dungeons is not fun anymore. Yes, at first, I was thinking this is great xp, loot, etc. Now we don't even have time to enjoy the dungeons. It's a race for people to just keep up. One poor new person said they didn't even have stamina left by the time they got to the boss because they used it all on sprinting. The vet players can take a boss down in seconds. To top it all off, if you complain or ask them to slow down, you get met with trash talk and added to their ignore list.

Advice of the month - don't expect literally anything in random dungeon finder, it's not a primary way to play dungeons anyway as random people generally have way different goals and skills. You can't change thousands people's minds by a post in socials, better find a way to enjoy it for yourself.

fun is subjective. Also that "one poor new person" year later will do speedruns as hell with "i don't care about newbs". Not because "hazing in army" style, but because of profit.

In a random, most people just want it done so they can jump on their next task or random with multiple other characters.

Enjoy the xp or utilize some skills to keep up.

One random normal we had 2 people need to go afk. Dps ran ahead and killed bosses. When others came back dude was at the final boss. We got a few hits in activity complete. Got my exp and transmute stones. Easier run. That's my approach to random normals these days I will take the thing at my own pace. If you don't like that and want to go faster then I don't mind if you go ahead on your own. I'm not there for gear or drops or leads or quests. I will do those things with pre-made groups.

Idk, I don't enjoy dungeons if I'm stuck as a healer/tank in a pug with 15k group dps. Wasting 10 minutes to kill one boss is not my definition of fun. ;)

+people queue for RNDs because they want transmutes and exp, not because they want to 'enjoy' the dungeon for 1000th time. That's why they speedrun.

ZOS needs to fix the new player experience ASAP! This includes fixing dungeon speedrunners/fake roles, DLC differentiation from normal quests in starter towns, and a way to properly follow the story.

Right now some players are destroying the game.

Don't queue for randoms. And if you don't want to get a dlc queue with a lowbie or a player that doesn't have dlcs. Or just queue for specific dungeons.

As for fake roles. In all honesty if you roll a base zone normal dungeon all roles are fake.

I agree with the OP, but find that these situations are not the norm. Most of my pugging experiences have been good, though the odd person dropping out of DLCs and having to wait on replacements can be a bore. I make a point of trying every dungeon I go in, even if my level 24 with no cp assigned gets dropped in a difficult one.

As for speed running, I let them run ahead. If I'm on my main, they probably need me, if I'm on a low level alt I still get the XP and loot when I catch up and often end up laughing when I find three players all rezzing themselves when I get there. You don't have to chase after them.

I must say though, the more I do and the more I learn, the less patient I am, especially with higher levels who should know what to do by now. I'm more impatient with those who try to force their own playstyle on others though.

ETA: I do find that runs go smoother and people are more helpful if you say hi in chat as soon as you go in. I'm amazed at how many runs go by without a word in chat, but as soon as somebody speaks up and says they're on the quest or want to do all the bosses for the plunder skulls etc, most people listen and slow down. I also make a point of saying thanks at the end, even if no one else does.

I meant DLC quest differentiation with all those questgivers in the starting towns(will edit the post). And I disagree with you, it is ZOS's job to make the new player experience a good experience. Saying "Don't queue for randoms" feels to me like you are saying: "Let's watch the game die."

There's nothing wrong with people speed running and there is nothing wrong with people needing to do it slow.

What's wrong is putting these two interests in the same group and expecting it to be peachy peachy.

Don't ask runners to slow down and don't ask new people to speed up. Ask zos for a way to separate the two activities without ruining it for either group.

It all depends on the people involved to be honest. I ran Moongrave Fane and Maarselok's with a 46 and a 47 through the dungeon finder yesterday, the rest of the group members being between 1200 and 2000 CP. In Moongrave Fane I forgot to pick up the quest at the start and not knowing whether it would've automatically progressed I asked if it was ok to run back to the entrance, no problem. In Maarselok's the level 47 first-timer asked whether he could listen to the story and have the mechanics briefly explained, nobody complained, we told the mechanics and how they get harder in vet mode.
In my personal experience you just have to ask, it's very rare for someone to rush ahead if someone asks, and he usually rushes alone with the others hanging back.

To the OP, yes. I agree, speedrunning is boring and kind of feels counter-intuitive to the purpose of playing a game, that being to actually enjoy the game. Unfortunately it's not entirely the players at fault. ZoS has put in layer upon layer of tedious grind to ensure that people have to keep doing content even if they don't want to, and as a result people will do whatever to get that content over with as fast as possible.

Now for some of these other posts. . .
Advice of the month - don't expect literally anything in random dungeon finder, it's not a primary way to play dungeons anyway as random people generally have way different goals and skills. You can't change thousands people's minds by a post in socials, better find a way to enjoy it for yourself.

It is in fact the primary way to play dungeons. The number of posts you see on these forums is pretty indicative of how many people rely on the Dungeon Finder to do them at all. Without the finder, I'd have had to solo literally 95% of the dungeons I've completed, because there's certainly nobody offering to group for them.
Don't queue for randoms. And if you don't want to get a dlc queue with a lowbie or a player that doesn't have dlcs. Or just queue for specific dungeons.

As for fake roles. In all honesty if you roll a base zone normal dungeon all roles are fake.

Read also: "Don't expect the game to let you play the game. Go through a hundred hoops to make it work or don't play at all." Which, thanks, I think I just won't play at all. :) Like seriously, queue with a low-level player to avoid DLC dungeons? What a backwards line of thinking.
There's nothing wrong with people speed running and there is nothing wrong with people needing to do it slow.

Yeah, this would seem like the most logical solution wouldn't it? There's been several posts on the forums recently about making a Group Recruitment tool similar to the one for guilds, which would solve SO many problems beyond just the speedrunner issue, but we'll see if that ever actually happens. I'm afraid they pad too much playtime with people running 18 characters through randoms to get rid of that feature.
Rich Lambert said that making a storymod for group content is silly, since dungeons are designed for challenge content. So don't wait ...

Challenging content. . . right. That's why we're here discussing people who breeze through the whole dungeon in under 5 minutes while leaving their entire group behind. Also must be why they added companions. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for dungeons providing a challenge, but I don't think having a lower difficulty mode eliminates that option. And honestly, if you ever really listen to Rich explaining why they do/don't do certain things, you can almost always tell he's spinning something to avoid saying "money" or "broken tech." None of their reasons for the game's direction over the past three years have made any sense beyond that.

I only enjoy fast runs when were not running past mobs and essentially aggroing the whole instance. This isn't Skyreach Catacombs.

Also a proper DPS player can simply burn each mob as they go so that the other players in the group can feel like they're contributing while not having to do too much cardio.

    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Then why do they keep putting parts of the year-long story in the dungeons? Delves and public dungeons can be completed solo at one's own pace and they usually feature less of a story than 4 man dungeons. If that wasn't enough, repeatable delve quests often don't require completing the whole delve and replaying through its dedicated story quest, while group dungeons always unfold their full story and play various scenes even when nobody in the party has the quest active. I'm getting some mixed signals between the design evident in game and Rich's statement.

It would help if people posted in group chat that they’re doing a speed run. I still prefer doing everything because mobs drop loot and leads, as do chests. Not taking time to loot containers I can understand. And bosses (not just the final boss) drop plunder skulls right now, and those are in a 3-minute timer.

I was the jerk player the other day. Tank and healer zoomed ahead ti first boss, with no indication that they would. Left me and the other DPS behind and getting caught in all the mobs the healer/tank aggroed. I just dropped without saying a word. First time dropping a random normal in five years. Felt bad for the other DPS.

It would have helped if we were all on the same page and given a couple of seconds to gear up for a speed run.

90% of player issues with random normals would be helped by simple communication.

These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

    {time moves forward through the hour-glass}

In a random, most people just want it done so they can jump on their next task or random with multiple other characters.

I don't know if it is "most", but it is often the case. As with any random group of people, you will find a variety of people. Some of those people are just there for themselves, and their wants, needs, and goals. Others are further down the spectrum towards the opposite end, where people are more concerned about how others are doing than they are themselves.

I have seen normal PUGs where most are tolerant of doing the quest, and stop and announce chests. I have also done normal PUGs where someone wants to do a "Solo + 3 spectators" run. (Edit: my theory is that they can almost solo the dungeon, but get hung up on one or two bosses, so they ignore the group until they need them)
Rich Lambert said that making a storymod for group content is silly, since dungeons are designed for challenge content. So don't wait ...

The term "story mode" comes with a lot of baggage and expectations. Typically, the expectation is single player, OP combat.
I would not expect ZOS to make a solo version of the dungeons, or even to have a "story mode queue" for a multi-player normal or easier-than-normal mode of the dungeons. A solo or easier-than-normal version of the dungeon is a ton of work. The story mode queue simply wouldn't work.

Normal dungeons are almost a story mode, as it is. If the group does not do it at a full run so that people can stop and smell the flowers along the way, the story is easily consumed. Naturally, this is not going to work in most PUGs, even if it is a story mode queue. (If you thought "fake tanks" were a thing to discuss, you will find "fake story mode players" even more interesting. )

To do a normal dungeon in story mode, all you really need is a pre-made group willing to take the dungeon slow. Some guilds already do this, if people want it and sign up for it.

If I see a single person, usually a fake tank or healer, rushing ahead I always vote to kick. If it's one person running ahead the others usually agree with the vote.

Love it when I get a fast group. I get new players may want a slower approach, but once you have ran these dungeons the amount a vet has you just want in and out asap. Also its good for speedrun achievement practice.
    PvP needs more love.

I only recently started running the 4 man dungeons at the start of the witches festival and it's been rough. The majority of the groups are just sprinting through the whole thing as fast as they possibly can. Missed out on one of the quests last night because of it. You'd think they might slow down a bit for the healer but nope. 🤷‍♂️

If it was a normal dungeon, the healer is sort of an extra DPS.

I was in a group where the healer died and no one noticed. That is actually the only time in recent weeks that I have seen anyone die in any of the normal PUGs that I have done.

To your point, if you are going to be doing the quest, announce it in group chat as soon as you see you have not done the dungeon quest. Otherwise, the base assumption is that you have already done the quest. It is not a faulty assumption.

Why even make stories if that's true?

It's weird, yeah. It's just that I'm all under the impression of the recently closed Vet thread. overland, which scored 40 pages. They mostly talked about what Rich was saying, not why it was a good or bad idea.
