What are companions for?

Companions DPS i think someone mentioned is like 15k max...

I have no idea what my companions' DPS is, but my main's DPS is low enough that Bastian provides pretty good backup as a DD for my tank. I'm not sure about Mirri, because I haven't her much yet, other than to maximize my rapport with her.

I don't know what mine is either but that's why I say we need a stat sheet of some kind for them so we accurately improve them. If we don't know the baseline crit, penetration, or base damage how can we know what traits to focus or what traits would be wasted? Does Bastian have more penetration? Does Mirri have more crit? We don't know.

From what I have seen most the people that have been asking for companions for a few years now are happy and want more. Doesn't hurt the game any and makes some players happy. So all good.

Yes to a stat sheet, and show a numerical value for rapport on it. Not disagreeing with that, just saying that Bastian's unknown DPS is good enough to assist me a bit when I need a bit of assist.

Yeah even as a single player noob they're a bit weird.

Not able to buy purple gear because of gold inflation so zero gameplay value, they do die quickly.

    As a warden main:
    - I like having a companion mounted so with a bear we're a small army.
    - I turned the voice lines up to full and listen to the chatter.

I tried looking at rep until i saw for myself what everyone was complaining about. The grind seems to be heavy handed.. unlike thieves guild and dark brotherhood which are very enjoyable.

So even me would say "i wish they did something".. or the companion system is unfinished, they got to point where they built everything youd expect but were stopped at the point where where they were about to connect some value for players.

I'm a casual solo player. To have companions allows me to extend the content I do in the game because they are a real support in fights.
Compared to before companions, I do a lot more varied activities (Delves, public dungeons, harder areas, ...) and I'm glad about. <3

I have some test fights that are pretty difficult to solo (said by someone who does solo dung runs). I've created pretty solid tanking build for Mirri and... Yeah she can hold aggro pretty well but that's all. In really hard fights I need to watch her and my back which makes it only more complicated, she doesn't interput channels on me (the only part that I was hoping for, you know because of artificial barriers that doesn't allow you to solo some things). So nope, companions do not help to solo anything, you can't solo already. It was really amazing idea but implementation is a bit underwhelming.

I am doing my best, but I am not a native speaker, sorry.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver&Gold as a "you think you do but you don't"-tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game." - @AlexanderDeLarge

As a solo player I find companions to be utterly useless. Bastian is just dead all the time. He's only good for delves and public dungeons - well, I can do them alone. I need Bastain for 4 player dungeons - he can't even survive mobs in Fungal Grotto 1. So, companions are just cosmetic pets for me.

    Some actual uses:
    1. Fully specced Companions are somewhat helpful when leveling alts (if you can be bothered to unlock them on each character lmao)
    2. Tank role is decent for easier WBs and such, as long as its not a boss that spawns minions etc. They can hold taunt and survive for the most part if you slot a group heal.
    3. Let other people know that you bought Blackwood.
    4. Meme potential like 2011 Lydia, haha guys Mirri is famished again what a goofball

I just want them to be able to wear set gear that is already available in game, not this specialized useless stuff they have now. I don't care if they continue to do 10k DPS or even less, I just want to be able to put something like Thunderbug on Bastion to make him into a fun lightning rod or something :P. There are SO many sets in this game that I can't figure out why they shoehorned them into such lame armor.

Honestly, he sounds like some DDs. That's why I tank for him-- and given my own low DPS, he helps me out a good bit. :)

Well, there is a bit of a problem with that idea. The sets we use are for us, designed for us, and benefit us. They would be as useful for them to wear as their sets would be for us to wear. They would probably have to redo every set in the game, and in the end, they would probably be very different sets than what we have today.

I’m guessing it’s due to all the additional calculations that would entail as there are a lot more additions, conditions, effects, etc. but I could be wrong.

I just started Blackwood and am liking the companions so far and especially Mirri. :) I like her personality and interests. Bastian’s intro story quest had some aspects that didn’t seem to me to fit and then felt like it was missing a conversation at the end saying that he would want to adventure with you or why. Maybe I missed something? But I am hoping he will be a good DPS companion for my templar healer when doing overland quests, etc., which I’m perfectly capable of doing solo, but are just soooo slow if I don’t change out anything but a skill or two. And I’m glad that, if I understand correctly, leveling up is accountwide but rapport is character-specific!

For those endeavour seals where you need to kill x number of beasties etc, if your companion killed it, would that still count in the endeavours counter? This one tried to check and it SEEMS that companion kills are not counted. Has anyone got a different experience?

When you have to do any endeavor that requires that you kill a number of somethings, it is often best to make sure all pets and companions are safely stowed in the overhead compartments.

My experience has been that kills by neither companions nor combat pets count, but I might be wrong-- it might depend on the exact nature of the endeavor.

It seems strange that combat pets don’t count. Get it re companions since they have their own exp etc, but pets should be counted.

As I said, it might depend on the exact requirements of the endeavors. But when I was trying to complete the "Kill X enemies with Class abilities" endeavor and tried using my combat pets because I had no other Class abilities slotted, their kills did not seem to count-- although that might have been changed since then, because I've noticed that some endeavors seem to have been tweaked to correct perceived bugs in them as far as what counts and what doesn't count.

Bastian built as a tank is about as effective as a mediocre tank you get pugging. He's not bad for an AI, really. Helpful when I was running NDSA solo for the lead.

I have Mirri on my crafter for when I am farming and get treasure chests for her kind of rubbish perk but hey a little extra gold never hurt anyone. On the other hand, there's an annoying amount of insects in the game.

Only use is for a bit of pew, pew for a new alt.

Yes! Sharing our sets with companions would have made them so much more fun.

I don't understand the decision to stick them with boring, stat-only gear. That, and the forced no-helmet aesthetic were big turnoffs for me as far as this chapter goes.

It would certainly be nice to see some changes down the road, but I don't think your assessment about their "only use" is very accurate for all players. Most players? I don't know. Some players? Without a doubt.

But even with companions as they are right now, a lot of players that I see running around are actively using companions and seem to be quite happy with them. Even though I don't use them most of the time, I was playing with Bastian last night and he was definitely helping me clear the content a lot more easily and quickly.
