Do you play characters of your same gender?

I have characters of both genders, though there is only one Olauron in each game and he is male. I don't identify with the character in a sense of traits, behaviour, etc., as I just play the character as an alternative version of Olauron in different alternative realities (Nirn, Thedas, Enroth, etc.) or in different alternative times of these realities (thus Olaurons from different Elder Scrolls computer games and from different forum Elder Scrolls RPGs are different characters). Others are mosty support cast or characters who have grown from support to lead.

I am not the character though, so my gender is irrelevant to it. As a player I am 1/2 of a storytelling partnership with the creators of the game. The character is a character, it is not me. I really don’t get why some people get so hung up on this?

When I work on my novels I tend to use female protagonists because there are certain storytelling methods that work better with them and let’s face it it’s not as if we need another hunky hero with a sword, we’ve got enough of those already.

Finally, as a child of the 1980s I remember a time when every single lead character was male, with a handful of bikini clad exceptions, I just find male lead characters boring and see no reason why I should play them in game.

Both. I started with all females on EU (10) and then started males on NA (9). They all have back stories and as my male Argonian’s red colour looks more purple after completing creation, I felt that he used to be female and has a more feisty character as a result. They are all personalities in their own right and I do not see them as extensions of myself.

I have all races, except Imperial, in females but left out male Nord, Bosmer and Orc as I prefer Khajiits. My two irl kitties have their own characters too and I let them know when they are running around the game and when they manage to do something great. Toffee-jo completed two WBs solo this week and he’s only level 39. It took a long while for my mains to manage that!

If given the chance, I only play characters I can identify with for immersion purposes. I'm a male so I only play males. If not given the chance (as is the case with some single player titles) it's not an issue, but playing as a female ruins the immersion somewhat.

As many have said before, the answer is YES because it is easier for me to identify with the character, not to mention that this way i can create an idealized version of what i would like to look like if i was that specific dramatis personae.

On the other hand i completely agree with one of my friends that plays mostly female characters, because, i quote "when playing you can see mostly the back side of the character and a girl's back side looks so much better" :)

    Don't shoot me :)

As this is a game based on fantasy I take the opportunity to play characters that are not me. I'm male but really enjoy playing female characters, and NO, they are not skimpily dressed waifus but really dangerous individuals.

The opportunity to play non-humans such as lizards or cats also increases my role-playing pleasure.

Khajiit has both (10 male khajiit, 7 female khajiit, 1 male fishycat). There was no plan behind the gender choices, they just reflected karth's sentiments at the moment of creation.

This one's first few characters were boys but this one loves his girls, and usually ends up playing them more often than his boys. For some reason it worked out that most of this one's stabby dps (5 out of 6) and tanks (4 out of 6) are boys, while most of this one's mag dps are girls (4 of 6).

I don't make characters to be a version of myself (either as I am or as I might like to be) I make them to be characters in the story I'm planning to tell. I usually start off with a vague concept like 'I want a tank...and I've never really played Dragon Knight properly...could those two go together? Yes, I'll make a dragon knight tank." Then I start imagining what that character might be like and at some point I'll realise I'm imagining them as either male or female so that's what they'll be. It's the same with their race, age, appearance, colour scheme etc. I have one character who predominantly wears green and brown with gold accents, which isn't even a combination I like but it's what suits her and it would seem weird to change it.

At the moment I have 4 women and 3 men, but I add new ones periodically so the balance keeps shifting over time.

Mostly the same. I have females from every race (+ couple of extra dunmer females, for reasons I don’t really understand). Lately I’ve created couple of male characters too, for the sake of variety and outfit and appearance options, but they don’t feel as “close” as the females do. Though I have the same issue with couple of the female chars too, when their backstory is lacking and I haven’t got a good grip of their nature yet…

    Hehe :D

There does seem to be this camp that insists the only good-looking females in the game are Bosmer, something I do not agree with. My Bretons and High Elves are beautiful, my Redguard is downright "hawwt" and my Kahjit is as cute as a button... but I guess it all boils down to personal preference, like anything else. I have a Bosmer male actually - usually most people say the Bosmer males cannot look decent... but I think he turned out ok... :D

I have both, but most are opposite of me, because I am shallow lass, and I like looking at pretty male elves ;)

But more seriously, I have an idea for a character with a backstory, and that's when their gender is decided. My own has no influence on theirs.

If a game has the option to pick your character's gender then I always pick the same. Just feels wrong for some reason to pick the opposite.

Yet if a game doesn't have the option and only allows the opposite gender I have no problem, no idea why I am this way lol
