Lockpicking on treasure chests - what's the point?

I wish I could see less of "Someone else is using this" prompts when interacting with Portals/Chests/Nodes, especially when within the next 5 seconds I see someone run up and just snatch the thing without issues. Is this some sort of long distance interaction hack?

I usually pick locks and I never got what you're saying haappen to me. The only exception is Imperial City. I force locks there due to higher risk overall.

If another player “lures” an enemy to where you are, doesn’t it ignore you and continue to attack them until it’s too far from its spawn site, when it just turns around and runs back?

Fail? How... also how does this lure a mob work. I think they path back to spawn point, or attack who hit them.
The lured mob "attacks" the person trying to open the lock.

No they don’t. They just keep attacking the player who attacked them. At least in my experience. They only attack you if you start picking a lock that’s in their initial detection zone, in which case there’s no “lure” involved.

It only works if the mob has an AoE attack like a troll or a bear.

I’ve never seen that either but ok.

I have seen players nip in and claim a chest while I’m fighting the mob ‘guarding’ it and they do so unmolested, AoE or not.

If you're a nightblade and use cloak, would the mob attack the player claiming the chest ?

    I don’t think so.

If the aggroed player dies or turns invisible, the monster still won't notice you. It will first return to its spawn location before it can aggro a new target.

    You need instructions? :s
I gather you hit mob once and the mob will follow you.
You quickly position yourself next to the person wrestling with the lock but on the opposite side to the mob.
The lured mob attacks the person trying to open the chest

That's not how aggro works. The player "luring" the mob to you has aggro and if you do nothing it won't attack you. If the mob being in your vicinity procs a set which causes an attack, or you have a pet out then yes you might end up in combat with the mob **but** so is the other player. Neither of you can open the chest.

The point is to increase your Legerdemain, put points into it and then when your lockpicking is high enough, dispense with trying to pick them and just bust them instead with a higher chance of success.

    Simple, really...

I've taken virtually every toon I have on the daily 'Craglorn Apple Bob' to get their skill high enough to do this and I've now got more lockpicks than I reasonably know what to do with.

During the last 'New Life' festival I actually had to remind myself how to do it on a couple of lower level toons....

    Apple Bob?

Usually best to do last thing before you log off for the day

Go to Belkarth in Craglorn and head east from the Wayshrine down toward the lake. You'll find an orchard, separated over three tiers. Go into sneak and steal all of the apples in the baskets. They all stack so will only take up a single slot. Then head into Thieves Guild just to the south of here and sell/launder all the apples in your inventory. Head outside again, and all of the baskets will have respawned, so rinse and repeat until you hit the limits for selling and laundering for the day.

Log back in again the following day and do the same, using any spare points to bump your legerdemain limits to speed this up a bit.

If you have the points, you can usually get to the lockpicking max in around 7-10 days (which is as high as you really need to get for treasure chests).

After that, go and respec and get any points you're not using back out of legerdemain.

    Simples...

[EDIT] I got beaten to the punch!
