They might have needed an assistance or doing it for achievements by which zos forced us to engage in it even if we hate/dislike companions.
You wanting to accomplish a particular goal does NOT equate to someone forcing you.
Achievements are made the way forcing you to do certain activities, it's not something new or shocking. There are people doing them for the sake of it and dealing with stuff they find annoying or not even needed (companions) so more options to shut them are welcomed.

Pretty sure it's safe to choose to accomplish or not an achievement. No one is being forced to do anything; the player chooses to pursue it or not. Some will choose to simply play what they enjoy, others will hunt for achievements regardless of whether or not the content pleases them.
Afaik, no one from ZoS is sitting over your shoulder, twisting your arm, yelling "Fish! Keep fishing!! You need to get the Master Angler achievement and the boat! Do it! Doooooooooo it!! Or I kill one of the remaining EU server hamsters."
Personally I would like the companions to have a vastly expanded library of vocalizations. Their present state is very limited and repetitive "talk" is rather boring and immersion-breaking. In lieu of vastly expanded remarks I would prefer to shut the companions up completely.

How can we shut them up completely tho without being able to put helmets over their heads/mouths? I feel this is the VERY reason they don't allow us to let them wear helmets!
Mark my words, they day they let us put helmets on them will be the day they allow us to shut them up.

I mean you don't need to pay your rent or mortgage either. If we're going this extreme, then that's not necessity either since you can survive homelessness. And nobody physically forces us to go to work. But ofc people don't really view the concept of going to work as a choice. They work because they have to do that. So there is more to the concept of "force" and the definition of it besides extreme brute force scenarios.

I mean.... If we are at the point that we are equating life responsibilities like working and financial health, heck even maintaining our personal relationships, with "maxing out the rapport with Bastian".... Then there is a serious problem.
