If you wanted blessed silence, why did you get a companion?

They might have needed an assistance or doing it for achievements by which zos forced us to engage in it even if we hate/dislike companions.

You wanting to accomplish a particular goal does NOT equate to someone forcing you.

Achievements are made the way forcing you to do certain activities, it's not something new or shocking. There are people doing them for the sake of it and dealing with stuff they find annoying or not even needed (companions) so more options to shut them are welcomed.

Pretty sure it's safe to choose to accomplish or not an achievement. No one is being forced to do anything; the player chooses to pursue it or not. Some will choose to simply play what they enjoy, others will hunt for achievements regardless of whether or not the content pleases them.

Afaik, no one from ZoS is sitting over your shoulder, twisting your arm, yelling "Fish! Keep fishing!! You need to get the Master Angler achievement and the boat! Do it! Doooooooooo it!! Or I kill one of the remaining EU server hamsters."

You would think it's a joke but you have no idea how many pceu hamsters died before my first master angler, it was a slaughter...

Anyway, most people are already forced (you can put " " to that if you like, they would still feel that way) to do content they don't like to get what they want in some way, and zos sometimes adjusts some things be it alliance skill line gain, dungeon difficulty etc so it's pretty safe to assume that mute or actual infrequent option would be no problem at all making people not even more mad on a feature they dislike while doing it for a keepsake, achieves or any other thing on Tamriel they wanted.

They really should add more options to frequency and ability to make companions waaaaaaaaay more silent. I am positive this will take like 5 minutes of work for one programmer, since they need to copy-paste one line, tweak probability number and add new name to option.

I quick slot them, summon as needed, and get them out of my way like I do with my flappy & bear

Personally I would like the companions to have a vastly expanded library of vocalizations. Their present state is very limited and repetitive "talk" is rather boring and immersion-breaking. In lieu of vastly expanded remarks I would prefer to shut the companions up completely.

How can we shut them up completely tho without being able to put helmets over their heads/mouths? I feel this is the VERY reason they don't allow us to let them wear helmets!

Mark my words, they day they let us put helmets on them will be the day they allow us to shut them up.

Thank you for making me spit out my coffee in sheer delight! My keyboard notwithstanding I second your suggestion, Helmets FTW! ;)

I have to question the validity of the statement "...feels nothing but contempt for you." If that is true, why does he keep hanging out with you? Why wouldn't he just leave and never come back?

Because he hasn't figured it out yet and has not decided to call himself the "Free Guy" yet.

It’s so odd to see these reactions, I wish they would talk more personally.

I mean you don't need to pay your rent or mortgage either. If we're going this extreme, then that's not necessity either since you can survive homelessness. And nobody physically forces us to go to work. But ofc people don't really view the concept of going to work as a choice. They work because they have to do that. So there is more to the concept of "force" and the definition of it besides extreme brute force scenarios.

In the context of playing the game at all, some things are forced and somethings are not. Some in-game things have requirements to get them and some don't. If you want a particular achievements you are forced to do the tasks required to get it, you can't just make up your own.

"What do you think you're going to make with that?"

A poison Bastian. A poison that i am going to slip into your next drink if you don't stop asking me.

i like his healing abilities but yes, the same dialogue over and over has gotten on my nerves.

I mean.... If we are at the point that we are equating life responsibilities like working and financial health, heck even maintaining our personal relationships, with "maxing out the rapport with Bastian".... Then there is a serious problem.

My example was meant to be an exaggeration; obviously, feeling "forced" does not have to involve brute force. But I stand by what I said - ZoS is not forcing anyone to do anything, the player is choosing to put themselves through the content.

There is something called "perception of choice", the idea that a person perceives the freedom to choose or not. And there are indeed some things that, even though theoretically we could choose not to do (like work or pay the mortgage), we perceive them as not really being a choice because the consequences are too great not to do it. In those cases we might indeed feel "forced" to do things, because there are important consequences to not doing so.

Collecting achievements in a game is not one of those things, and if it is, then imo it is a serious problem of prioritising things in life.

I did not do that. At no point did I suggest they were equivalent things. I used an extreme example to illustrate the problem with your use of the term "forced."

Forced is NOT just about brute force or things people need to do for survival. It's a multifaceted term that indicates that something is required. The very nature of a video game is automatically unforced.

But within a video game there are forced and unforced things. Things that are requirements for accomplishing your in game goals in games are reasonably described as forced. And it's important game designers understand that because it speaks to the way games are designed (will it be fun), the health of their most vulnerable members, and their ability to generate revenue.

Dismissing all of that on incorrect semantics about how since it's not brute force or necessary for survival it's not actually force is just bad game design and stifling towards understanding user issues.
