Steam Deck Compatibility?

Does anybody know if ESO will run on the Steam Deck? It uses SteamOS, which is built on Linux I believe.

Would hate to have to replace the factory OS with Windows…

It should, yes, but like everything else Steam Deck, you can't know what performance will be like and there's always a chance things can change in a year. But it runs on Steam OS at the moment.

Let's hope so. Performance aside, I just hope the game will work and install and boot fone with proton on the deck. After that, I will be playing so many low level characters to casually go through and level them in bed all snug, questioning. and delves, etc. Pvp and such il hop on my desktop ofc. Got my reservation for the 512gb one and ESO is going to be the first game I download, or atleast o e of the few lol. After that, move my pc emulators stuff and install older games and such.

This is exactly what I want to do! Maybe I'll finally finish all the quests in this game

Big request for Devs if you read this please look into "Steam deck" when you will have your hands on it. For example what graphic setting will be perfect?

I have reserved 512GB version. Im buying it mainly to play ESO in work night shifts when i have free time.

ESO is among the not running games in the deck, according Steam themselves.

Really sorry about this, especially having reserved a 512 myself :((.

I think I reconsider, no ESO nor BDO, too bad.

    the only problem is:
no gamepad if i launch it with my 512GB deck...
i have try with a xbox gamepad via bluetooth and the deck gamepad not work.

    only way what i see:
    USB-C dock or hub and keyboard+Mouse ...

fun i want to take the steam deck in hollidays or events to make the dailys...
    (then i must take a keyboard+mouse to do this :D )

the good thing is: it starts and i can update via launcher

Are you playing ESO through steam version of the game ?
How was the installation & configuration ? Did you had to tweak anything in order to play the game ?
Did you had any crashes or something weird that does not happen on Windows OS ?
    Add-ons work too ?

I play through ESO launcher (non-steam, standalone client) and the reason I did not order steam deck yet is that I have to be sure that ESO (the client I use) will be 110% compatible. I know it is Linux based OS and it kinda scares me off tbh. Unfortunately user experience on Linux is way, way worse than what user experience looks like on Windows. Linux is an OS from developers made for other developers. So you are expected to be a nerd / geek and know how universe works :D

How could you expect that an installation out of STEAM work seamlessly in the STEAM device?
Moreover, what is the sense to play without the deck gamepads?
STEAM itself says that ESO will not run on deck, period.

Allow me to ask: why the gloves in the picture? :)

    i will keep trying...
currently I have it running so far:
    installed over not eso laucher
(works if you add it to your library as a non steam game)

what works for me is the game mods not tried yet that's next

what does not work for me is the gamepad ...

I asked on youtube the creator of the video said steam must run because of the gamepad controls but I start eso via the game library as a non-steam game.

if you tinker a bit it's interesting how the data is all stored so I have to see if I can tweak something in the configs but only later when it's up and running

I had installed assasins creed origin for example there comes uplay error it is but as playable flags the expect that you install the launcher as a game and then everything about the uplay launcher does ... which in the case of limited storage space on the deck then a bit of a pity because you like to outsource large things on the sd card.

I will not say that it does not work at all but it can be a bit of tinkering until it runs ...
so I hope that someday a page exists where step by step is explained what to do.
just by linux and the different Proton versions it is complex.

2th example i'm a gog user and have once the windows version of children of morta copy to sd-card
and install the linux version over lutris

    try both:
windows version over steam libery (proton) reduces the screen to 1/4
funny is linux version works like a charm BUT only in desktop mode i cant start the shell over the steam libary it dont open the game ...

it should only be a warning to those who think everything supper 1 click and everything works

the steam deck is muck try and error by me ;) but i want to learn linux that was the reason why i buy a deck.

Best way to learn Linux is to install it on your compy. You can also run it as a double log, while still keeping windows.

Pop OS (more or less a variant of Ubuntu) is particularly user friendly for gaming: beautiful UI and very small space on disk.

Not a steam deck but linux user here.

I play ESO just fine on my linux rig in 4K max settings (intel 7800, GTX1080ti). With the steam launcher i runs out of the box, no custom settings (just Proton Experimental).

Thanks for that info. When win 10 is EOL, I'm moving to linux. Since I have a few years to experiment and figure out which "flavor" I prefer, I should be set by the time I bid windows a not-so-fond farewell, and hopefully, even though I'm not fond of steam either, it will continue to support games like ESO OOB.

I looked at the video above on YT and read the comments with replies.

The Author used SD in Desktop mode, launching ESO through the Bethesda launcher. Result was good, as anyone can see, but this is not something for the unexperienced users. Essentially, it amounts to use the SD as a PC with Linux (with can be done, SD is a PC by itself) and installing ESO on the SteamOS, that is a version of Linux, using Proton, I guess.

No way to start ESO directly from the Steam library till now.

    ok i am further ^^
I have now got the gamepad to run:

    i use GE-Proton 7.5 and start the eso64.exe
experimental dont works for me i get an error

    parameter:
    PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%

in the settings in the game must then explicitly gamepad mode be activated.

it works over game mode in desktop mode you dont get the onscreen keyboard overlay to login

Interesting. I can’t get it to work in Linux through steam. I don’t have the standalone version to try that either. If I could get it to work I’d ditch windows altogether. Has ZOS made any announcement as to compatibility?

I've been running ESO on Linux through Proton for years, so it may take some tweaking, but it should run on Steam Deck.

Hi guys, I'm running ESO on deck successfully. It needs some initial setup and a few workarounds but once installed and setup it's really smooth. You need to get used to gamepad controls tho. I'm improving but still not as efficient as I used to be on mouse and keyboard. Especially if your build has abilities you need to place, luckily I use only one. But I also didn't player for a 2-3 years and I'm using Steam Deck as a way to get back to the game (so maybe just my skills degraded in general).

Anyway, I summarized my experience and posted it in a quite lengthy post on ProtonDB, feel free to use it as a reference and ask me if you still have problem with anything while trying to run the game. So far I tried almost everything apart from trials or huge Cyrodiil battles and I was able to run with all my mods on mid settings quite smoothly but FPS dropped for me once in Belkarth in Craglorn so I'm afraid it might be the same in some big Cyrodiil fight but it could be something else as otherwise it was running nice considering it's "handheld" device. Anyway, I still have room for downgrading graphics if necessary.

    Hello fellow players,

Steam released new update for Deck introducing window management in game mode (you can swap windows in steam overlay when pressing steam button).

This feature means that whatever window is selected will stay in front. So the launcher doesn't randomly pops up in game mode anymore and you can enjoy it without using Desktop mode to run the game.

I posted new review reflecting this and a few other things I figured out along the way at ProtonDB. At the time of posting this comment the report was not yet approved and published. This might take a few hours but this permalink should show it once it's published (old report might show in a meantime, I mentioned "25 APR 2022" in the report title so that's how you know it's a new one): https://www.protondb.com/app/306130#psgUZfhzty

If you are getting Steam Deck, enjoy and feel free to ask if you face some issues

I don't want to burst people's bubble but I don't think ESO will run on the steam deck (almost got one myself actually).

The reason being is thay ESO requires a "dedicated line" which bssically means an ether port connection.

The steam deck does not have an ether port, from my understanding, in the current release.

That isn't to say that it is not a great machine or thaf if it does well future versions might have one but currently I believe that this is what will keep eso from running on the steam deck.

    - cheers

Besides the installation you can play flawless including 4 man dungeons. But it´s best to just play through story content, farming and dailies - addons work. Thanks to the potato PS4 support this wont change.

ZOS should really get it verified and just sort out the installation.

You need to close the launcher otherwise you will get stutters.

For those who want to install ESO on Steam Deck. The Proton can be found in the Discovery app bottom right corner in desktop mod.
