Don’t have to type in password?

I just heard steam versions of the game you don’t have to type in your password. Aside from raging that I’ve been typing it in for seven years, is there a way I can switch to steam version? Do I just buy it again on steam? Ty.

I originally downloaded it from the website btw.

How long is your password that this is a serious issue for you?
Steam breaks ALL THE TIME, and is a pita to deal with. I swapped away from steam as soon as I heard it was a thing and never looked back.

With steam you can avoid typing your password this is true - and contrary to the above it's been pretty damned reliable (I think one outage in 12months that affected me and I play a lot). You still of course need to log into steam so it's not that big of a win.

Steam is great if you play on Linux because it automates all the proton stuff with ESO but the login thing .. meh. You swap one login for another and you get the steam security and additional checks which can be nice or an utter pain depending on your habits.

When I used to launch through steam, launcher would break, it ate my game twice to the point I had to completely uninstall, was generally a pain in my bum.
    I don't miss it.

use bat file then. Something like this:

    echo you_super_secret_password|clip
    START ESO

At main menu just press CTRL+V. Done.

Obviously "ESO" is shortcut to launcher.exe located in the same place as bat file. You can also use:
    START TTC
    START Minion

or any other 3rd party tools with just one click (double click). Happy lazy launching )

Agreed. That would be pretty easy to be compromised.

I would like it if ESO allowed password managers to recognize it as a form, though, so a password could be used by one without crossing the clipboard.

(For reference, a former password of mine at a particular location was once: m,qJZ6&t7>9@gvC&wtUgNF_LL=,#icj:f#qEYhTV_Fn6KRQw4YZb%g@W+@=e)MJs
    Good luck with it.)

No way! That was my password, too!

Yeah, I use 1Password and would love it if the login would take that directly, without me having to enter my account name and password using the keyboard and copy-paste.

generally yes, but ESO has two-factor authentication, so even if you know other player password you can't login with it anyway. Not in game, not in profile, not in crown store, nowhere.

Given how the majority of people are about password security, that's not the argument you think it is, especially given that the 2FA used by ESO is typically an e-mail.

If Bob uses "Today101" as his password for ESO and is like the majority of people, it's a safe bet that the password for Bob's email is also "Today101" (or a variant of such), so the 2FA just makes it take a second longer for a malicious actor.

I found the Steam version very nice for that reason, BUT if Steam breaks if you hadn't bought ESO from the official website you're out of luck. If you did though all you need to do is go into your Steam folder, find the ESO client, and start it up manually from there. Then you don't log in with Steam and can enter in your password normally.

Sure, you have two passwords that secure your ESO account. You can afford to give someone the ESO password, as long as they don't get the second one. But wait! Maybe they already have it.

First question is... why let someone get either of them in the first place?

Second question is... should we place that much trust in the 2FA that they have in place?

It's been almost two years since Steam authentication broke last time. People talk about it like it's happening twice a week.

...I know Google is hard for some people, but this shouldn't be.

    https://www.securitymagazine.com/articles/92331-of-people-admit-they-reuse-the-same-password-for-multiple-accounts
    https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/blogs/your-employees-reusing-passwords/
    https://www.idagent.com/blog/10-password-security-statistics-that-you-need-to-see-now/

Those are all literally on the first page of a Google search for "percentage of people reusing passwords"

(BTW, depending on source, the percentage of people reusing is, statistically, 53% on the low end and 72% on the high end. Hence my original comment of "it's a safe bet...")

Sadly, while it is not quite as bad as "Today101", it is close enough. There is a reason why password managers include checks for reused passwords and consult a database of known passwords. It is not because they like doing unnecessary checks, either.

I was once told by someone that the perfect password was "letmein". Once they learned a bit about passwords, they let me know that they had changed it to Psalm 23:4. I hope you understand the problem that this anecdote reveals, as both passwords share the same problem.

In the entirety of ~7yrs I've played this game, there has been only been 3x a steam specific issue with ESO prevented me from logging in and playing. And I play daily so no semantics about when I login and not counting some down time.

So call it about once every other year, that is far far more reliable than the many numerous times we could not login to ESO due to some ZoS screw up, bug, etc.

Also, while not everyone has the option, original beta players through to I believe ~2nd year could link their game to steam and have it be a steam game far as steam launcher, auto login as described for this thread, etc - but also allow direct login via using the eso64.exe directly.

When I just want to play my main account, I use steam launcher, click play and auto login. When I want to play 2nd account or swap frequently between both accounts in same play sessions, I use eso64.exe and type in credentials for which account I want to play.

You've been lucky, as steam has had more maintenance and down time, connection, disconnection, login, and slightly higher ping for most other steamESO users. I have both steam and standard ESO accounts, I've noticed the issues first hand.

    Chuckles...
As someone who works in information security and penetration testing, I can tell you with CERTAINTY that is too often the case, and the root of many breaches, both personal and corporate. Credential stuffing attacks are a serious issue. 2FA is helpful, but email-based 2FA is quite weak for the above mentioned reason. Some kind of Authenticator/OTP solution would be best. Password manager support would be great too.

I have 9624 hours on record for my steam account on ESO - unless these other down times happened between midnight PST and mid morning next day when I login for writs with breakfast before going to work, then I have been logging in the majority of the ~7 yrs daily and while certainly possible am not remembering a few, it is either 3x with +/- 1-2 more times, not 10+ or something like that.

I easily remember dozens of ZoS specific screw ups leading to downtime or extended unplanned maintenance. That's far more than steam at least from my personal experience.

Am not saying you are wrong, just saying my personal experience does not confirm yours, and my play hours are in the majority of PST prime time that I would most notice unplanned outages from steam on.

Which means your password is stored in the clear in your macro data files, which makes it about as secure as say, putting it in a text tile on your desktop. It's personal risk acceptance, I suppose, vs convenience. A common dilemna.
