Golly, some people take ESO far too seriously. It's a GAME. Companions are a bit of fun.
If they don't float your boat and you can solo everything in the universe don't use them.
I find them quite amusing.
There is enough stuff IRL to get serious about.
a new "skill" that cannot be used in relivent content like VET dungeons, PvP or Trials.
they are pure overworld fluff that even when kitted out properly are still outshined by most things.
and this is coming from heavily testing the PTS where it was easier to push the companions to max gear, skill, etc
It would be wrong to assume that companions will be equally beneficial to every player of the game. As I see it, the people who really need companions are not the people who are doing veteran dungeons and trials. I think that they will work much better with the bottom 2/3rds of the players more than the top 1/3rd.
and people for who companions might actualy be helpful? companions are NOT helpful for. they are not going to help you do anything that you couldn't already do solo.

While true I do feel that ZOS should have been a bit more forthcoming about their intended power level when they introduced them. Especially since they will of course be compared to Skyrim's companions. Now people were hoping for more and are disappointed.
What's funny is Mirri said "Sera I hope you're watching" so I turned around to watch her and thought whoo she fixing to do something! And all she did was stand there in the red and died. OK, Mirri
