As for pranks, does anyone remember that Anniversary Event during the Alikr Dolmen run someone was putting down a cake on top of the Dolmen chest every time? I thought it was hilarious, but people were pretty salty trying to figure out who it was.

I remember it. It was my first and only time doing the dolmen grind, trying to get jewelry to break down for crafting. Thanks to cake guy, who did not just do that once but at every single dolmen for well over an hour and probably close to two, I was unable to loot the chest at any of the dolmens so got no loot for most of them.

If you're too stubborn to go farm dolmans in any other zone in the base game you don't get my sympathy. Not that I'm defending this practice, but seriously! If you stayed in that zone for over an hour with this going on it's on you! I would have gone on to a different zone after the 2nd cake.

From what I remember, even when I ate the cake by accident, I was still able to loot the chest afterward. I just had to be a little more careful with the interact prompt.

Not doubting you, just saying that wasn't my experience with it.

How far do you stay zoomed out? I noticed you mentioned that bears and such don't block you either. I have to stay zoomed all the way out or I get motion sickness, and I think that does affect your click radius. I can move all around someone's blocking pet or a blocking item like the cake, and no matter where I position myself or how I angle my camera, there's just nothing popping up for me *but* the cake, or nothing at all if it's a warden bear et al.

At that time there *weren't* any other zones being farmed. I had gone to Auridon first, posted in a couple places in zone and was told to go to Alik'r because that's where the farming was. And this was back when I was not yet able to do dolmens by myself, I was new and had no gear or knowledge of how to upgrade myself to solo things. Now that I can solo dolmens, I absolutely do. Or at least try--every time I start one, others show up pretty quick.

Letting someone run you off from where you want to be, doing what you want to do, by their bad behavior isn't the solution. Dealing with the bad behavior is.

If you were trying to get inside the grocery store and someone was blocking the entrance with shopping carts, the manager wouldn't tell you to go find a different store to shop at. They'd call the police and have the perpetrator removed.

It is not reasonable to expect the person being harassed to tuck their tail between their legs and run away, while the person causing the trouble is allowed to continue.

I know some people don't like confrontation but really? Stand up for what is right.

I think there's a lot of different views, and a lot of assumptions in this thread. While a toggle would be fine, I'm not sure the devs really have time to have such a switch on for that sort of thing.

Personally I'd recommend just turning it on Self only.. Want to eat Mystery Meat? Go for it. Leave everyone else to play the game without it.

That's a memento right? What does it do again?

It places an object on the ground that other people can pick up. When they pick it up, they eat it and get sick. It's just a short animation. The thing is, if place in front of a bot train, one of them can get out of sync with the train. When out of sync, they might get stuck and just stand there until the handler come back to fix it.

Yep, very useful for checking if that level 3 player trotting only an apparently predetermined path picking up nodes is a bot.

You pick up a node, then place the mystery meat. When the "player" walks up to the now replaced node and activates the meat...multiple times...it's a pretty good way for players who aren't sure if someone is a bot to ease their conscience about putting in a report.

I love that idea. Would it be possible to add something to the meat to disrupt the script of the bot? Perhaps a small speed boost or just the slightest mandatory pause when they pick it up. I'm not sure how bots work, but placing a player usable method to throw them off course would be brilliant.

do players really use bots in this game? i mean, talk about stupid. you get caught and you're out for life, is it worth it just for a few nodes?

Yeah, they really use bots...I have seem them multiple times... its crazy watching them...

That's fine if you aren't bothered by pranks, but a lot of people are. They are not always done in fun, but are sometimes done with malicious intent.

You realize you don't have to pick it up?
And if you do you learn what it is.
Besides that is why it is in game, there is no other purpose for it.

I dont pick up meat in game anymore...not after I went into that dungeon and saw human body parts all over a table, and then a pickable piece of meat right next to them labeled 'Pork'.... I only gather what I hunt....

Hmm, I don't know exactly how far I'm zoomed out, but usually not the full way back unless I'm in PVP. It's interesting to think that perhaps small things like that make such a big difference in how people are able to interact with objects.

I don't think it would be very difficult. There is already a toggle to auto decline duels. Why couldn't they duplicate that to auto decline mementos?

This could actually save them time in the long run because it would greatly cut down on harassment complaints.

Now I've seen it all. Many mementos are meant to have a humorous or amusing effect and this is one of them. How often does it come up anyway? I can't remember the last time I saw it.

Hell...WoW's Piccolo of the Flaming Fire used to be FAR more troll worthy (of course they nerfed the *** out of it too), especially when it worked on all players, regardless of faction. God I loved that thing...

Using it for fun with friends, and others, is probably how it was intended. I very much doubt using it as a form of harassment, as some will do, was intended.

If someone does anything or uses anything repeatedly on someone who has asked them to stop, that is considered harassment, regardless of what the intended purpose is.

If I just see the mystery meat lying there and I decide to click it, that is on me. But if you place the item on top of something I may need, preventing me from using it without having to click the mystery meat first, then that is griefing. If you do it repeatedly, especially after being asked not to, that is harassment.

I don't feel strongly either way, but I wanted to mention I've encountered people putting mystery meat down at the last second when a harrowstorm finished.
So you go to get the reliquary but suddenly you're picking up mystery meat.
It can definitely be used in situations where you're not really giving people a choice.

That's what makes it fun. :) Pranks on people who are already expecting them kind of defeats the purpose.

It has a minute cool down on it so I think it's fine. The only way you could actually harass someone with this memento is if you stalk the player, and that is reportable.

What exactly is the purpose? To startle someone? To trick someone? To scare someone? I see nothing but negative effects for the person being pranked. I don't know how anyone can find it fun or funny to expose another person to something that may affect them in such a manner.

I absolutely hate pranks in real life, too and will not have anything to do with anyone who is a prankster. I certainly don't want to put up with them here where I come to relax.

Either or all of those things. That is what a prank is, to trick someone.

Some people find it fun and not at all negative. Some people don't (like you it looks like). My own opinion is it depends on the individual prank on whether I find it funny or not. Some can go too far, or can be used excessively to the point they are no longer amusing. The Mystery Meat on this game is harmless and cannot be used excessively (it has a one minute cool down), so I'm fine with it. It's just a silly game animation that lasts for maybe a second and is nothing to do get worked up over. Now if someone follows you around using it every minute on you I could see how that could get annoying. But as I pointed out, that means they are stalking you and that is a reportable offense.

I think that's an extremely narrow view to impose on people. People also don't come into the game to be berated by a stodgy player for trying to engage in things that bring them joy. You can mount to immediately cancel the action. Also, even if it is sitting in front of or on top of something you need to interact with, it still shows the prompt to eat the meat. You're pranking yourself by activating it, regardless of placement, and then you surmise everyone must be harassing?

I think in the grand scheme of things, its not a big deal. But the constant stream of "little things" starts to make the experience kind of annoying. The jackass who deliberately parks his bear on top of the writ turn-ins so that it just takes that little bit longer. The idiot standing over you while you try to open a chest even though they'd be far better served spending that time finding another. The people going out of their way to scam the clueless.

I personally wouldn't get upset over the silly meat thing - its kinda funny as a once- or twice- off. Buuuut its not hard to understand why people get annoyed within the context of all the other stuff. You know that there is a certain type of person that will genuinely spend time trying to make things crap for other people. There's a lot of hostility and antagonism in this game that a lot of us don't need. Its not some real-life lesson: people generally don't act like that because irl they'd cop a smack in the chops.
