    I just don't like animal/beast races in any game. Argonians are just some swamp lizards that licked Hist Trees and evolved and became slaves of the Hist. Those trees are a hive-mind from another plane of reality and should be eradicated as they are an invasive species that will devour everything if you let them.

    Funny, personally I'm tired of Elves and find Argonians refreshing

    This, but also with humans. They're overused obviously. How many games had humans and elves in them? 99%? Doesn't help that most elves are simply pointy ear humans too.

    How many games had cats or lizards as a playable race? Lol. Can probably count on one hand.

    - TES III, IV and V (obviously). TES I & II also had beasts-races but races in those games were just a flat 2D image in character inventory screen. Also TES I beast races were more like elves with cat or lizard tail.

    The only other game that comes to mind that had proper human-animal hybrid race is DOS 2. Other than that there are not many games that have them. Technically Diablo 2 & BG2 had Werewolf that you could play as but it was more like a class than a race. Other older games that had animal-like races were Wizadry 8, Might & Magick 8, and slightly newer Legend of Grimrock 1&2... but those were only 2D images on character screen so I don't think it counts...

    So basically, not counting mobas and mmos (that obviously have at least one animl-like race or character) there is simply almost no games that have something like this. Pretty much only cRPGs that have them are TES games. Also, I do hope that BG3 will have Dragonborn as it is supposed to have all D&D 5th edition races, from a basic player's handbook.

    Human & elven races are so overused that it is simply put - boring. Almost every game has a dude (human), a dude with pointy ears (elf) or a dude that is short (dwarf). So whenever there is a race that is something different it feels like a breath of fresh ideas. Now I am not a fury or scally or whatever those subcultures are called, I just like when a game offers something new & unique. If human races were not so "overused" - those would not be so mundane, casual and stereotypical.

    You can't apply logical biological expectations
    to weirdo Elder Scrolls fantasy creatures in general. And Argonians in particular are freaks of nature even by TES standards. There is a book where an anatomist describes dissecting some Argonians to see what makes them tick and coming to the conclusion that they shouldn't even be alive.

    Khajiits, Argonians and other races are the result of genetic experiments carried out by Vault Tech and others in the years just before the war in 2077. Some experiment may still have been on going in vaults for some time afterwards. After thousands of years of radiation, random mutations, natural disasters (ie. floods, metor, etc.), the surviving beast races (Khajiit and Argonian) emerge from the prehistoric times of Tamriel along with other races of elves and men.

    Actually, that is not true..
    https://www.reddit.com/r/teslore/comments/jm9lhf/are_argonians_mindcontrolled_thrall_part_of_a/

    Some one that is very good at ESO lore put it together and basically, there are 2 concepts:
    1. Hist is a native species to Nirn, that existed long time ago, before Mer existed and actually Mer came to Nirn from different plane of existence... so they are the "aliens".
    2. Both Hist & Mer came to Nirn from 2 different worlds, and therefore they are both um... alien and invasive species ?

    The difference is that while Mer & Men Ancestors took humanoid form, Hist took a form of a tree.

    In any case, Hist by any means is not an "invasive" being. Long time ago, Hist existed in many places on Nirn, but due to a War between Mer & Man - Hist did not participated in that war, but on the lands where that war took place, Hist got almost wiped out and only exist in some parts of Nirn (Like Black Marsh for example).

    As for the part of Argonians being some kind of Hists's "slave" - again it is a common misconception. Hist & Argonian relationship can be best compared to Dunmers & Tribunal. Dunmers are not Tribunal's slaves, but they only listen to their guidance and wisdom.

    Same thing with Argonians. They have free will, they can communicate with the Hist, but they can chose what they can do. Sure, they can be "manipulated" (just like Tribunal can manipulate Dunmers), but it is not like they are mindless husks controlled by some kind of Hist's Wi-fi. Besides, not many Argonians have the ability to communicate with the Hist. It happens only in Tribal societies and only a handful of chosen ones can actually listen to the hist. Also, there are some cases in ESO lore of non-argonians being able to communicate with the Hist (after ingesting hist sap, and somehow it was not a deadly poison to them). Additionally, if you played Oblivion or Skyrim, then you could see that Argonians that live outside of Tribal societies, do not need Hist at all and live totally intepdependent from it.

    Reminds me of morrowind and how both khajiit and argos couldnt wear boots. Kinda wish that was an option here for more diversity. They couldve balanced it out by making helms/boots count as any set piece or something.

    Or because lizards are actually plantigrade like humans and it makes more sense. One game, ONE GAME and Argonians are "supposed" to be digitigrade and its all a conspiracy by Bethesda to save money. It was literally just Morrowind(of the main games) that depicted them that way and it hasn't been seen since.

    Arena -> plantigrade

    Daggerfall -> plantigrade

    Then Morrowind comes along and tries to change their appearance without explanation.

    Finally Argonians return to their ORIGINAL form in the next two games and in ESO.

    Ironically its more likely that Argonians sharing a skeleton with Khajiits in Morrowind was to save money and not in the modern games. Perhaps they didn't want to make a third skeleton for a humanoid with a tail and just used the Khajiit one. Truth is Bethesda probably just thought it looked cool and didn't want to stick to their original design, but eventually they went back to their roots.

    As for the Argonians being slaves to the hist or not, I would say it depends on whether they have a connection or not. The Argonians that are connected to the Hist get literally mind controlled and forced to obey the hist. They get Called back to Black Marsh to stop the Oblivion crisis, while the non connected Argonians stick around in Cyrodiil and act as the NPCs for that game. The Hist mostly lets connected Argonians do what they want, but absolutely can force them when they desire it. I don't think any PC Argonians could be connected to the hist, given their mythic powers and origins. Nerevar was a reincarnated Dunmer, Hero of Kvatch wasn't called back to Black Marsh, Dovakiin has a dragon soul, and the Vestige is practically a daedra so any connection he had is likely severed(would also explain why your PC knows nothing about Argonian culture and has to ask). I guess The Agent and the Eternal champion could have connections to the Hist. If so they probably get called back to Black Marsh and are the real reason Dagon was defeated so easily there.

    Lmao at the dinosaur theory though. No OP not even close. Kinda goes without saying at this point because others have already smashed that theory. At least we can all agree that Argonians are not mammals as they lack *** to breast feed with, thus lacking the one trait they would need to be classified as mammal. This fact will trigger some(horny people), so I will shut you up preemptively with facts. Daggerfall and Morrowind Argonians were totally nude and had no *** even though the other races and some monsters did. Lets not forget that male argonians have always been able to go around topless and never had them. Literally undisputable facts, mammary believers btfo'ed with facts and logic. *** I have a problem....
