    Aesthetics
    it must be a khajiit
simple as that. I have some magicka dark elves but I'm completely satisfied only playing khajiits

    Lore / Culture
lore/culture, closely followed by aesthetics. I was going to say aesthetics as #1, but then I realized that while I like how Dunmer look, their culture is depravity at its best, and that knocked them farther down the list.

so yeah, culture/lore. also helps that I'm a bit of a storyteller myself.
Shortly after the formation of the Ebonheart Pact, a Nord woman was given a tour of the Tribunal Temple. When later asked about the experience, she seemed upset. Suffice to say, the Dunmer were not pleased to hear this, and thus they inquired further.
"Well," the Nord frowned, "the priests were very angry and unwelcoming. They kept shouting things at me like "you can't drink that mead in here!" and "somebody stop her, she's running naked!" and "we can't catch her; she's covered in grease!""

    Role-Playing
I guess role play come closest. When I make a new character I have an idea for a person with a semi-detailed backstory, including race and class in mind.

    Passives / Meta
These days it's passives for me, or mostly. Back when I started I made my first character a Redguard because a it was something of a tradition for me with ES games.

we can have 18 characters per server, so 1 answer does not cover the reasons.

I have a few characters where racial passives match the class best, like high elf sorcerer.
Use those for the more rare occasions of challenging content, like vet dungeons.

My majority (I play 36 characters) however does not "match".

I love woodelves cause they are cute, and like staff based gameplay, so I have woodelf magsorcs, magplars and magdks.

Also redguard magsorcs, they represent my fiance, a german-kenyan.

The slight loss of additional damage on the non-matching builds is so small, that I barely feel it in the content I play 95% of the time, daily delves and worldbosses, crafting writs and events.

I actually don't write any more, because it became very apparent to me that I simply could not deal with the current attitude of "you MUST interact on social media in order to sell yourself so people will want to buy what you write"

Okay then just for fun, I challenge you to enter the 3-day-novel contest!

Oh and for me, I would pick "other"; plenty of times the character and part of their story pop into my head. Some days I just play around on character creator, run or start them through the starting dungeon - and some times I've left them for months or even years before playing them, or in some cases deleting them.

For me, unless and until I actually "play them" it's not role playing...for me its a form of creative writing.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

I think that the majority of players choosing aesthetics/lore are (un)consciously attracted to characters similar to them... E.g. I main an Imperial bc I am Mediterranean and my char looks the closest to me an ESO character can look... I think this would also explain the tremendous Breton popularity, because most playerbase is North-European somehow.

If I'm not wrong, Dunmer have always been most popular in the forum polls. What does that tell us about the ESO player base (or the forum crowd at least)? ;)

Yes, just like people playing Bosmer are cannibals.
We had that discussion already yesterday. Didn't end well.
