Blocking numbers/mechanics

First off I'll state I'm not doing anything meta or trying to get the maximum effect from my builds. I just play for fun so no I'm not trying to be the best at anything.

Ok So I have an Imperial MagDK that I am currently using with S&B. I haven't had any issue with keeping my magicka up enough to plow through most stuff I have tried. I have a resto staff on my back bar so I can swap and top up if needed.

I question is around the numbers that I can block. I use block a lot but I'm wondering what the actually difference is blocking with the shield or with the staff? AS in baseline numbers not skill line modified etc?

It's mainly a thought exercise for me as I'll still be using my S&B for main weapon with staff backbar for when I need to go more close in mage.... Just curious.

Sword and board has more resistance ( shield is armor piece + CP), and passives that work towards blocking damage. Not sure if I answered your question but I tried

Default block is 50%

As a Dragonknight you block 10% more making it 60%.

Sword and Shield/Ice Staff allows you to block an additional 20% more damage making it so you block 80% damage.

Sword and Shield also blocks and additional 14% against projectiles making it so you block 94% of projectile damage as a Dragonknight.

So apart from the skill benefits from S&B skill line it seems that blocking is only slightly better with a shield than a staff simply because the shield itself gives you better resistances??

So if I want to have a blocking machine I add points to my S&B skill passives to get the best blocking available but if I want to have a frost staff with some points in it it can be a decent block tool (with using mag instead of stam)

Is that about right?

You can achieve the same amount of total mitigation with a sword and shield as you would a frost staff as long as you balance out the change in resistance, yes. But if you block with any other weapon your total mitigation will be significantly lower.

So looks like I need to go frost staff back bar to somewhat keep my blocking capability similar to my S&B front bar while still being able to use the staff heavy attack for Mag resource generation. Cool.
