Perhaps I have a negative opinion about this. (Yes, we understand that there can be embarrassment in some cases ... Can you, if it's not difficult, explain why you don't like it? :x)

To be fair, housing in itself is useless. It's a gold sink just to let you decorate your own little corner of the game world, but it does nothing for your gameplay other than look pretty. You dont log out by using a bed to sleep, you cant plant and harvest your own crafting mat nodes etc.

It does a lot more than that for me, the person behind the characters. It's a great creative outlet, and helps me relax when I need a break from more intense activity. And it's great for bringing people together, because there are guilds that have housing as one of their interests.

Following that argument you could say gaming's mostly useless. Not everybody cares about beating hard content and rankings. Housing's fun to some people and that should be enough.

I seriously miss the housing in RIFT. If whoever it is now hadn't trashed the game, I'd still be doing houses there. SO much better than anything else - including here.

    Hmm.

I guess I didn't expect more from houseguests, partially because the last "add NPCs to your house" thing I played with was strongholds in SWtOR. Which didn't even have pathing or interacting. They were just placed decorations.

It was better in SWTOR. Why?
Both here and there NPCs are placed decorations. Only here they can walk around on circles.
But there they are my companions. Apprentices, friends, lovers... Someone I know and spend hours and hours with. Shared common history. It is easy to RP why they are at my characters house
Here are just some random NPCs I know nothing about.

SWtOR had plenty of Random NPCs to fill your house with too. Like the Twilek dancing girls that I had all my companions standing around watching. o:)

(and how did you "RP" that your Sith character companions were hanging out with Republic heroes?)

Easily. My sith lord doesn't have Rep.H. I would have put them to the Republic house if I had one though. There are several dosens of NPC to choose from there. There is no need to put them all and then try to RP that. I have around 10 of NPCs and even though they are not moving but they make me feel that my house is not empty and there is life in there. They are talking to each other, working with machines, enjoying the sightseen from the balcony or viewing new statue.
Here... let's say they only place to put that Phedre I can think about is a cage in my vampire's house. And I have seen adatamines about new housguests and give me them for free I would either not use them at all or put in abovementioned cage...

I dont really get how this kind of complaint is even a thing.

We just got given the ability to animate all our mounts and house guests. This is something the housing community have long wanted, to help bring houses more to life, and that is exactly what this change achieves.

I have no doubt at all, that more and more house guests will now be added, likely via the Crown Store.

HOWEVER... To an extent, the implementation is a complete waste of time if we can only have 10. Cos it includes mounts, pets and services (I think, its a bit unclear, which is an issue in itself). I couldnt even put the free new house guest in my main home, because of course I'm already at the ridiculously low cap for "special" stuff (8, in Hundings Palatial).

I was disappointed by this. I personally. But I think it will improve over time, because it is completely boring thing. Yes, they can run around your house along the designated route and talk if you open a dialogue with them.

I would like an interesting system that would allow you to use your cosmetic collectibles on NPCs in your home, such as a miner's outfit and a two-handed cadwell shovel or miner's pick weapon outfit to make a sort of... mine in your home. And of course the same emotions. What's the point of being an NPC if he can't do the emotions you want.

Oh, yes, admit, you have long dreamed of a lustful Argonian maid in your house, dirty n'wah. :D

Well, or at least a unit of soldiers in your personal garrison

Some more animations and emotes would be nice.

But I still like the addition. It's fun. Least for me. I have Scamps and Banekins running around chasing each other with dragons flying overhead. So it's definitely livened my house out some.

Hopefully they'll add some cool new features in the future.

The thing is, we have to realize that zos is a business. They invested the time and money to make house paths and houseguest because they think it is a profitable addition to the game. Thats not a criticism of zos its just a fact, business exist to make profit.

So far everything they have given us is a free, paths is a base game update and this first houseguest is also free to show off the system and get players interacting with it. The reason we cant have customizable houseguest because houseguests are the thing they are trying to sell you that makes this a profitable investment for zos. Its a new avenues of micro transactions to sell you just like housing was a new avenue for micro transactions.

Yes they could sell you a default customizable version, its likely the majority would buy a few and it would be profitable. However selling you a non customizable version is far more profitable because they can sell you the reskin of this. So if you atart out wanting a mage and a guard you can purchase a mage and a guard. Then 3 months down the line they release a new psijic npc that is cooler then the mages guild one you have. Or a dominion soldier that is cooler than you auridon guard. Even if a player is entering eso or entering acquiring houseguest at or after the time these new version are out it is still possible they may want both. It they sell you a customizable one it is drastically cutting into there potential profits utilizing this new transaction method.

That being said I do think we will see some improvements overtime, especially if this proves profitable. It makes sense to invest as little resources into a new product as possible until you see how well it sells. That way if if flops you wasted a smaller investment.

So what improvements could we see?

Emotes: Tough call on this one, it would increase the value of emotes it zos is looking to revitalize interest in that. It would also potentially boost crown crate sales with emotes being in them. However its again is possible this could take away from selling you individual houseguest if they can find a way to sell houseguests with specific emotes or emotes only houseguest can utilize.

Equipping Personalities: While selling npc with specific emotes or emotes that already exist to equip to npc is not the easiest sell from a pr or implementing perspective. Selling npc with personalities already build into them is desired and expected by players. If an houseguest just stood still players would be unhappy with it. Which makes building onto the system to allow players to assign them is almost a guaranteed no. There isnt alot on personalities in game to choose from, they dont sell personalities that often. It just doesnt make business since to do this over just selling you a houseguest with a personality already build into it.

Emotions: Again probably not likely. They would just include it with the above mentioned personality. While im sure zos does have a way to make characters have facial expression or body language prompts building a way for players to assign the prompts at specific times or even constantly is a lot of work with no real pay off. Might get it with emotes but emotes basically cover most if not all of what this could do.

Interactable objects: Fairly likely, if i was zos this would be high on the list of improvements to make. They already have the animations for anything the player can interact with. At least for average size humanoid npcs. It works good with the current system and UI, they'd really just have to make a way to detect interactable objects that the path nodes arrow is pointing to. It would present an opportunity to sell furniture items for both Houseguests and players to utilize. If they really wanted to go all in they could expand a ton into that direction as far as things to sell you. Players already love interactable furniture and it would just boost it to make houseguest use them.

No it's not. It's entertainment and a way to relax, both of which are important to our well-being. And housing in particular provides this for a lot of players.

Something I'd love to see ZOS implement with houseguests someday is one that gives you a random daily quest, with a reward box of goodies when you return and turn it in. An NPC who hears "rumors" and said rumor sends you somewhere in the world (like a delve) to do something / kill something / find something.

For me, anything new in this game is great news. Sure, right now they are kinda boring, but hopefully they can get flushed out a bit in the future..Unless the company swears that there are "limitations" to doing these things..

I will probably change my mind once I see how much these new NPC will cost us in the Store (500-1k..okay anything over 1k for these NPC is a bit too much imo). And I'm not a big fan of some of them not being available except during certain times of the year (like the scary lady this time around).

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

Now I didn't scroll through all the pages of this discussion, so I am sorry if this is a repeat, but I think it would be very cool if we could add things into pathing like a house guest turning on or off a light or interacting with activatable items. Would love to see my house guest use my Portal to Coldharbour to summon Caldwell to bring a further sense of life to my home.

Also I would love to see the ability to purchase a shell house guest that we can turn into either a character of a friend, an alternate character on the account, or both. I also think it would be cool to be able to program what their 3 dialogues are. Would love to hear my house guests saying "Long live House Vile!". I do understand to implement something like this, it would be limited to merely text, as it wouldn't be cost effective to pay voice actors to it from text and make it speech, but I personally would be ok with that.

Finally, sort of off topic, I would like to be able to add the actions of pets into pathing. For instance, a few of the cats will swat at a fly or something. Would love to be able to add this action into my 1-30 second wait time that the pet/mount is able to sit in one spot before moving to the next point.

    *Raises hand*

That's me! I have done everything possible in the game(played the content, not necessarily gotten all achievements and such), and I love farming/selling materials. That fluff I love so much gives me something to do with all my gold I have no purpose for. That's why I buy houses for new players and loan out gold on top of buying anything I even mildly want from the crown store by doing crown exchanges. Most days, if it wasn't for my mindless farming, I wouldn't find a reason to play (outside events).
