If I have Hat of XYZ, do I need to also have one of each variant of the hat in each trait to also reduce the cost? If I have Sturdy, for example, can I later make a Divines variant?
I am on the PS4, so I can't check out the test area.

No, traits don't matter. The traits you can put on the items are determined by the research that character has done
You only need 1 of each type of item. 7 body pieces, necklace, ring, and the weapons to fully reduce cost.
For items that come in multiple weights (monster helms in particular) you would need 1 of each weight (so 6 total for the monster sets, 3 each of Helm/Shoulder)
