PS5 and XBSX "Free" Upgrade

Well they will still need two versions because those who don't own a ps5 will need the ps4 version as the ps5 version won't work on a ps4. And yes if you are going to be new to ESO after the ps5 release then the ps5 version will cost more than the ps4 version just as Ps4 versions cost more than PS3 versions. But more than likely the PS4 versions will drop in price

Seems fair to me. If you already own the game, it's free. If you don't own the game, then yeah, you need to buy it. Nice to see they're making the transition as seamless as possible.

I want to hear about visual updates though! Can this game finally enter the 21st century and get a draw distance now? The latest expansions genuinely have some pretty good LOD, if you use the Daybreak mod to push the fog back far enough to see it. Hopefully it's a sign that they've been planning on doing this for a few years now, and that they made their last few expansions "draw distance ready".

Do you really think that the announcement wasn't proof read? Do you really think they didn't use specific wording for a reason?

You are new around here, right?
I will fire up my new PS5, download whatever version is available from the PS store for free because I already own it in the store library, link my PSN account to ESO and enjoy playing where I left off the last time I logged on.

Sounds like you will be playing the PS4 version of ESO for a while after you power up that PS5. ZOS is making no promises, giving no dates, it might not even be out this year. For all we know, they decided this week to make a PS5 version and have not even started.

How can no one understood what they have said ....

IF you have the game currently for Ps4 or Xbox or you buy it BEFORE next console release- you get free upgrade.

HOWEVER when the next consoles are released and you buy the game for PS4 or The old Xbox and later on your buy the new console - then your game wont be upgraded and you will have to buy it again.

    Jesus.....

Yup. Looks like the PS5 and XBSX will be whole different game clients and different SKUs. That means that if you buy the PS4 SKU and later upgrade to the PS5 and want the PS5 SKU, you either arrange it so you get the free upgrade by buying now, or you pay for it later.

    So...
A couple of things to take away from from the post:
    - The only way to get the upgrade free is to have the current purchased before the new version of the game comes out. TRUE
    - The current version will still work the same exact way as it does on the next gen systems. DEPENDS ON CONSOLE PROVIDER & ZOS
    - It will use the same servers as they currently do. TRUE
    - If you do not own the game at launch of the new version, you will have to pay more for it. DEPENDS ON CONSOLE PROVIDER & BETHESDA, LIKELY TRUE
    - The upgraded version will not be included with the current game passes. DEPENDS ON CONSOLE PROVIDER

Well, I'm not too worried about buying a newer version of the game so it will work on the new platforms (if only it has way better graphics, etc.).

I have trouble with this statement: "you can continue playing with your same accounts via backward compatibility on your respective next-gen consoles without interruption or loss of progress--same characters, servers, everything!"

That seems to tell me that the newer platforms will have their own megaservers and we can't just port our old account info on the newer version of the game.

That's more depressing than having to spend more money on the game. Means we'd be stuck on old gen graphics and can't use or fancy new $$$ toy's graphic power to play ESO. Sad face!

It literally says that it will be the same characters and same servers on the next gen. All with updated graphics. The part you bolded is the complete opposite of the conclusion you got from it. The backwards compatibility statement is only in relation to not losing character and account progress.

Hmm, will there be a cross-play server between the Xbox and PC set up?
With the new xbox specs, there really isnt a reason not too now?
Cannot on the PS5 cos Sony still won't allow it but Microsoft is happy for cross-play.

Well xbox player will be at dis adventage due to add on

I actually think a ps/xbox crossplay more plausible

They did say “same servers” in that quote, though. They didn’t add new servers for Steam or Stadia. I can’t see them doing that for next-gen consoles. We also would have heard about transfers to these new servers so people could keep their accounts as advertised, and we don’t have any mention of that.

I'll agree it can read that way as well, but why would they say it the way they did? I read it as New game = New characters/servers, backward compatibility game = old characters/servers.

I hope your right and I'm wrong, but it won't surprise me if they do end up having them separate.

They even re-iterate it in the post that was made specifically to talk about this:
Just to clarify: you will be able to carry over your progress no matter what. It's just that the upgraded version will not be available immediately upon the launch of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation5.

this is the worst money-grab for the new consoles so far, and far surpasses the repackaging of Skyrim.
You're not reading the statement correctly.

ZOS has been working on "ESO 2.0" for some time now. Those with the game today, and who purchase a new console, will get the upgrade for free.

However, here's the important part to understand: THERE WILL BE TWO VERSIONS OF THE GAME. This means two SKUs from the respective stores.

There will be a point the old game will be phased out, and if anyone should by the old version on the new console, the free upgrade will not be available to them.

This makes sense, and it's been this way for a long time.

If you really want to see bullcrap, having to repurchase any and all versions of Skryim is where the true money grab situation is. Skyrim remastered? $60 please, and no, we don't give a damn you've already bought it before.

Frankly, I'm really shocked Zenimax is giving this away for free. Sort of makes me tear up a bit, until I remember the damn Crown Crates are still in the game. >:[

Personally, I expect that the only difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions will be increasing some of the graphics settings like on PC (draw distance, grass, AA/FXAA/TXAA/whatever, etc) and maybe a higher-res texture pack.

And since they'd have to do whatever tweaks it takes to make the PS4 version run in "backwards compatibility" on PS5, doing those graphics changes doesn't seem like it'd be much more work. So, yeah - they might have just decided this week, and it would still be ready in time. /shrug

Why are you assuming it will cost more for a new user on next gen?

We are thrilled to announce that if you currently own or plan to purchase an Xbox One or PS4 copy of The Elder Scrolls Online between now and the launch of ESO’s next-gen version for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation®5, you can upgrade free to that version of the game. We do not yet have a planned release date for the upgraded version of ESO, but stay tuned!

The conditional "Already own, or purchase before release = free upgrade" implies that if you don't it will not be free. Otherwise they could easily have stated, "We will be supporting the new Smart Delivery System, and any version of ESO will have enhanced performance on the new next gen console."

Seems pretty clear to me. If this is not the case, the wording definitely speaks the opposite.

No, the assumption is that if you don't already own the game you would have to pay for it. Not that it would cost more than it already does. Just that if you already own the game you won't have to pay for an upgrade.

Like, really. If you don't own the game right now, you have to pay for the game to start playing it. The same thing would be the case in the next generation. If you don't own a game, you have to buy the game first.
Yes I read it as this too, game probably cost the same but might not get default discounted.

However its one issue, say you are an student living at an dorm but tend to drive home to your parents most weekends.
Now it would make sense to put the PS 4 at your parrents place and the PS5 at the dorm.
If you own ESO now I assume you keep the PS4 game and get the PS5 game.
If you buy ESO in the future you probably have to buy one PS4 and one PS5 version to pull above off.

But overall this is good news for console players, next gen will have an much faster cpu and an very fast SSD.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.
