Tips for countering Lantern Guards?

In addition to just letting yourself get seen on the way out of a Black Sacrament, I also just fight them in the corridors sometimes. Easiest thing. Having more movement speed helps with the escape paths — Channeled Acceleration can be cast without breaking sneak or invisibility. So can Harness Magicka with Marauder's Haste, but that's more magicka-intensive.

Yeah, I've been trying to get the balance between speed and stealth on the way out. Trying to sneak half way to preserve my detection count then run the rest of the way to preserve my time, but it's not ideal and I haven't got the balance right yet. It also leaves me with no room for error during the mission. I can't miss-time anything, I can't make one wrong step (I... have a bit of a habit of pressing movement keys too quickly and rolling when I don't mean to. It's super embarassing) otherwise I don't have enough free detections left to be able to run out of the mission.

@SedoUmbra Turn off double-tap to roll dodge!! This will make positioning SO much easier in all content in the game. I have mine set to Left Alt key. You dodge in the direction you're currently moving, so it's also easier, faster, and more reliable. No more being punished for being fidgety : p

you can kill lantern guards with no penalty if you do it fast enough iirc

Yes. You need a decent burst though. I'd say two LA/skill attacks max is all you have.
2 Snipes in rapid succession should do it, unless your tooltip damage for Snipe is really low. That's what I usually do when there's a lantern guard in the way and I don't want to take the time to wait for them to move (assuming it won't be witnessed by anyone else).

My advice is to look for secret passages and plan out your escape room in advance; waiting until problematic lantern guards aren't going to block you if possible. Of course you should always do the secondary target first so that the timer doesn't start until you're ready to leave, and then try to time the killing of the primary target so that you've got a fairly clear run to the exit (I'll sometimes kill people between me and the exit in advance to make the escape quicker and easier).

If there's a lantern guard between your target and the exit who's going to be a problem and slow you down more than you'd like, then I'll usually try to kill them in advance with a pair of quick Snipes. On most characters that will kill them without you being witnessed (assuming nobody else is around to see), and if it doesn't kill them you'll have to finish the job and get witnessed by the lantern guard before you can kill them, but assuming you've avoided notice up until then you'll still be able to pull off a perfect sacrament because you can be witnessed up to 4 times (IIRC) before the area is alerted.

I haven't done any since Greymoor, but does the Vampire Feed work against the lantern guards? If so it is a nice ranged instakill.

I recommend a set-up with 5 Night Mother‘s Embrace; 3 Night Terror; and 4 Darloc Brae (with 2 of those being the “unique” Hidden Moon Band rings, that come with Swift Trait already on them).

You’ll be zippin’ through the gaps the Lantern Guards leave, easy-peasy. :)

Just bumping / clarifying to avoid confusion due to someone else’s post above, but...

...you don’t want to GAZE at the Night Mother - you want to EMBRACE her. ;)

For sacrements and heists I use the following gear with jewelry swift trait,
    5x Night's Silence (craftable)
    3x Night Terror

You will be very fast even when sneaking with very little stamina drain (with medium armor passives and CP).

This is a good setup for non NBs. Add Wild Hunt for all classes. For nightblades, Night's Silence + Darloc Brae both 5 pieces means permacloak and full movement speed while crouching which makes DB and TG dailies incredibly easy. Swift jewelry is still recommended.

As for lantern guards, I just avoid them on NB since I have enough time anyway.

I ran Sacraments on my Tank with no gear change and invisibility pots only.

Though a stealth/speed gear buildout always helps, it is probably overkill for this content type ... especially with players on limited resources.

Heists and sacraments are easy on any build when you have the "where is everything" sorted out. Suggest not worrying about perfect until you have thoroughly explored and memorised the map. IMO lantern guards and timer is bad design for stealth challenge and just makes that content boring.

Both night's silence and darloc brae are easy to obtain. Stats don't really matter if you take a clear non combat approach which I usually so since it's much faster. NS can be white quality and work. If you're vamp you only need darloc. Swift+wild hunt are icing on the cake.

Tried that yesterday, couldn't get it to prompt. Not sure if it's a range thing or something hardcoded.

    1) be vampire
    2) wear 5 darloc bray, 3 night terror, 1 wild hunt
    3) do secondary objective first
    4) kill a lantern guard if you need to
