Why was performance better during MYM event, and now in the trashcan again?

It seems strange so many people find the performance during MYM better. That has not been my experience at all. Although I do not spend a lot of time in cyrodiil outside of MYM, I do take all my 8 characters to Tier 3 every month. During MYM I spend all my game time in cyrodiil.

MYM performance and peak hour performance outside MYM are both terrible for me. I can't say one is much better than the other.

I do notice slightly better performance during off peak hours outside of MYM. During MYM, prime time or not my skills won't fire at all half the time. Press H to mount takes a full 3 to 5 second before my horse appear and I mount. It is absolutely not an acceptable level of performance.

Any thing ZOS tries to address this is good news based on my experience.

It seemed worse to you during the event because you actually spent time there for a change.

The people who spend nearly 100% of their play time in cyro are not lying about the performance.

Definitely didn't think anyone was lying lol. Was just sharing my experience. As a PVE player who was reluctant to go to PVP at all in the beginning, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it when i did spend some time there. I would spend a lot more time there if performance wasn't so horrible for me. Sure there are some issues with pve with quest and dungeon glitches but cyrodiil is a whole another level of non-functional. Lag is one issue but also other stuff like never ending combat mode that prevents mounting until i find a way to kill myself. The aggravation of all these things outweighed the fun for me.

I do hope for the sake all pvpers they find some solution that works. It's a big part of ESO and it is a shame it is such a mess.

We still haven't gotten an answer on this.

What was done that improved midyear mayhem performance?

Why can't we do what ever that was on a permanent basis?

This would be a step in the right direction, but even during this time performance was not great. It would be adequate for about the first hour of play, but as time went on performance deteriorated. By hour 2 it became almost unplayable. Keep battles were like watching a slideshow.

I doubt we’ll ever get an answer. It likely has a lot to do with $$$.

Since ESO’s end game has not been primarily PVP-focused for a VERY long time, ZOS can justify poor performance for that part of their player base if it saves them some cash. People who spend all their time and money in game on housing and crown crates don’t need skills to fire immediately on button press...

Imagine how quickly games like COD, Battlefield, Battlefront, DOTA, Fortnite, etc. would fail if, in the middle of combat, abilities took 3+ seconds to fire, players were hit with random loading screens, etc? It’s such a shame that ESO’s PVP performance is such an utter joke, because it’s such a great experience when it actually works. ESO could have a vibrant streaming culture on par with other PVP games if they actually spent the time and effort to focus on PVP.

I didn't mean to imply performance was perfect during the MYM event, only that it was much improved, and the population pressure was much higher at that time as well. What ever they did made things much better. I'm just asking why we can't do what ever that thing was that made it better all the time. ...and then work on improving things even more from there.

They reassigned a bunch of their server power to pvp for midyear mayhem and then they reassigned it back afterwards. Thats what the 8 hour maintenance was immediately before and then again soon after the event.

So performance IS server related? They CAN fix a lot of performance issues by changing how they manage their servers?!

But we PvPers are a minority of the player base and so they most likely won’t do that.

    =^^=

i dont understand this logic. With that kind of logic, they could also cut from dungeons and trials since most of the player base cant complete or not interested.

I mean almost every pvp player are heavy spenders when you look at the sets, motifs, mounts they have.

Why is it good then and trash now? that's simple

during MYM zos allocated the server resources from dungons, trials and areans to cyro..the trade off is..dungons, trials and areans were literally unplayable due to the sheer lag.

Yep that long downtime was them pulling resources from the PvP zone servers, basically it seems to prove that infact it can be ran well without changing/ruining the whole way combat works but they won't because of sheckles

We know things did not improve because the player make-up in the main campaign because it was swamped with PvE players. In the main campaign, only the hardcore PvP'ers were willing to sit through the que. So in Grey Host, the player make up did not change significantly as compared to non event player make up.

It certainly appears that they did a temporary server upgrade of some kind and that is what improved performance.

Why can't we get the MYM performance full time? Why can't we revert to what ever changes were made to make the MYM event work smoothy on a full time basis?
An short term hardware update does not make sense. Pretty sure Amazon run an default server as for most stuff like web pages and cloud applications you can simply use load balancing between servers. This also works for ESO, overland, dungeons, trials, and BG are just instances on an lots of servers.

This does not work for Cyrodil who is one large instance so here you can only use one server for each campaign.
Say they switched to stronger servers, now why should they switch back and do all the costly development and testing ending up doing nerfs who can drive lots of players away from the game.
It does not make economical sense, its just 3 servers after all. You can buy an 100 core monster for around $50K.
This assume you can install custom servers

More likely you got plenty of pve players or others not primary after the large ball group fights who is hardest for the server, they got in early and stayed for some time. Also guess plenty of PvP players stayed out because the queues or farmed emperors on other campaigns, its not like they needed AP hard anyway.

Again I point to the client in the room.
In short if you get serious problems watching an Alkir dolmen zerg during prime time well Cyrodil on an pop locked campaign don't work for you same as an <10k dps player in an vet dlc.
    Now this again is complex:
    1) Yes it plenty of players with high end rigs who has problems, probably because some weird bu but,
    2) Most PC players set up their game to look good and run smooth overland out of combat. Consoles probably set similar.
Now in large fights this don't work well, lots of console players has serious issues in large MoL trash fights.
Same with Cyrodil, now having lower graphic settings for trials and Cyrodil would probably solve a lot of this.
On PC this would be an secondary graphic setting tab.
Next gen consoles will be an paradise for them unless ZoS try to force 4K or other stupid moves.
Again move out trials and Cyrodil to an separate graphic setting.

yeah I assume its space related, and they'd have to buy a bunch more server space to make it better. The thing is that server space on this level can cost millions and millions of dollars. Its a financial dilemma between spending that money or dealing with their players having poor performance. A decision that is also probably hard to sell to whoever is footing the bill for the server.

On top of this the added pve element in cyrodiil such as dolmens destabilize cyrodiil even further. The whole top of the map AD here is very unstable. Bruma dolmen really messes with up there. Chalman load screens 99% guarantee and i even see the dolmen smoke or clouds or whatever in the inner of chalman. I think personally that if they just removed the pve part they added would add to stabilization and less need for changing how AOEs work in cyrodiil. Just saying.

ZOS bought a 4th server hamster for Midyear Mayhem. shortly after MYM finished, the hamster expired, and they didn't replace it so now we're back to 3 again.
Shortly after the formation of the Ebonheart Pact, a Nord woman was given a tour of the Tribunal Temple. When later asked about the experience, she seemed upset. Suffice to say, the Dunmer were not pleased to hear this, and thus they inquired further.
"Well," the Nord frowned, "the priests were very angry and unwelcoming. They kept shouting things at me like "you can't drink that mead in here!" and "somebody stop her, she's running naked!" and "we can't catch her; she's covered in grease!""

Exercise: take a look at a crown exchange discord sometime. Count the amount of crowns exchanged in an hour’s time (hint: it will be thousands of dollars’ worth). Multiply that by the number of crown discords that exist (there are several). Add on a couple hundred dollars’ worth for the crown exchanges that happen each hour outside of discord-facilitated trades. Ask yourself: how many purchases of actual gameplay (trials, dungeon DLCs, story expansions, PVP DLCs (oh wait there aren’t any), etc.) would it take to equal even a quarter of all that money being exchanged per hour for mere cosmetics?

At this point in its life cycle, ESO is not a video game. It is a cosmetic microtansaction store with various PVE and PVP mini-games attached.

Could we please stop falling for the same old story of slow servers? The processing power in the year 2020 is more than enough to handle those calculations. And it was enough before some patches ruined it.

It's a programming error, maybe not easy to fix, but clearly a software problem.

How is it "clearly" anything? We are working with a deficit of information here. That is why people are asking for ZOS to tell us what they did to make it better. And asking why that change had to be temporary.

It was unplayable during MYM event...

I almost exclusively PvP, and virtually everyone says that MYM performance was much improved over what it was the day before the event started, then back to trash can the day after the event ended. Performance was improved with a single maintenance, and then downgraded back down with a single maintenance.

What did they do to make it better?

Why can't we have that full time instead of radically limiting abilities ONLY in PvP settings?

I secretly wish they would cancel few year's updates totally, i don't want dragons or houses, i want a game that works and it's fun to play. Undo all the horrid skill and combat changes, make it like it was like prior to Morrowind update or such. That's what i wish for. Please say the code is still saved, pleeeeeeaase.

And this solution works as well. Just revert the changes that have taken place that brought on the horrendous lag. We had AOE's since day one, so it seems unlikely that is the actual culprit.

An popular theory around MYM the influx of PvE players and 3 overflow servers changed how Cyrodil worked.
Lots of the PvE pugers went for the two primary servers at top of list who gave the 50 transmute stone reward.

Now then the PvP players came in for their guild runs the server had hours of queue so many moved to the overflow servers.
In short the PvP guilds was spread out and you get fewer of the massive fights who kills performance.

The other popular option is that they upgraded their PvP server for the event, however I see that as very unlikely as running these servers full time would be much cheaper than all the patching testing testing they do who adds more bugs who then has to be patched again. An mess who is both expensive and cost them customers.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.
