Just a guess, but... because, just like costumes, they defined the hair's surface material properties to look correct for it's default colors, without any regard for how other colors/dyes will look on it?

I've only previewed it on one character, but I suspect it makes all hair colours look darker. My crafter has grey hair and this style looked black in the preview.
There is also a problem with the new hats... they make your char bald! (tried on female breton).
@valkyrie93 you made it look really nice but I agree, there should be consistency between color on all styles. Changing your style shouldn't mean you suddenly get a dye job. Some other hairs do this as well, though this one probably takes the cake.

Exactly, but it doesn't support the OP's argument.
Other hairstyles like "By Kyne, It's Humid" are darker by default.
I think players should do a little less blaming and a little more reality checking ... because it's reasonable to expect not all hairstyles will have the exact same hue.
It's perfectly reasonable to expect all hairstyles to have almost same hue. My IRL hair don't suddenly became several shades darker when I braid it or something.

Well, short hair always look darker than long hairRed goes darkerI've only previewed it on one character, but I suspect it makes all hair colours look darker. My crafter has grey hair and this style looked black in the preview.

By Kyne is also darker (although not quite as dark), but; a) it's a free hairstyle you can choose in char creation, if you want that look, so you know what you're getting and b) it's probably supposed to indicate damp hair, as it's humid.
It's not a Crown store-only hairstyle, with no indication in the description that it will be darker than all other hairstyles, even damp ones.
You can see Seafarer's looks darker than your current hair colour in the preview, but the uninitiated may assume that won't be an accurate indication of what it will look like in-game.
By Kyne (preview) on my char, for comparison:
