I don't play on console but wow what is this?
Sorry I found this really odd and would like to see an official explanation for our Console playing players.

I know its a joke and a meme that Pc is considered the better platform and all but Consoles shouldn't have to download 56.82GBs. >.<

    They said a while back that they're making patch files be less and less. It worked for PC. Maybe you guys were supposed to get like 100GB instead? I don't know. Maybe it's like performance improvements they keep talking about. They're aware and working on it.

    Even so, one could think they could have improved the process on consoles at least when it comes downloading things.

    It looks like ZOS messed something up: With Update 25 we had to redownload the entire game, and that was huge. We did this because ZOS told us this would "dramatically reduce the patch sizes" for all future updates, especially on consoles. However, now with GREYMORE, ON CONSOLES WE HAVE TO REDOWNLOAD MORE THAN HALF OF THE GAME AGAIN?

    Dear ZOS,
    • It sucked a bit that the release had to be delayed for one week because of Corona. However, this was understandable.
    • It sucked considerably that on short-notice the console release then was delayed once again for a political statement. Many people believed in you and your release day and took a free day - which was lost.
    • It finally sucks most that we do not have a small Greymoor download as PC users (and as was promised with Update 25), but instead we have to DOWNLOAD HALF OF THE GAME AGAIN. With two consoles in our house and not a high-speed-connection, another free day we took now is lost... for what?
    Why are so many negative things happening on consoles lately?

    The big deal is:
    1. Many people have usage limits on their internet
    2. Many people have slower internet
    3. We were told that patching was going to be more efficient than this (clearly it isn’t)

    The reason for the disparity between the PC size and console size is that it's much easier to overwrite specific files on PC rather than updating large chunks. The last update was supposed to make console updates smaller, but it's not likely to make consoles work the same as PCs when it comes to updating.

    I went to sleep. My PS4 went to power save sometime after that (light color changes from white to something like red). When I woke up and clicked the console controller, the PS4 woke up, and download started. The settings for power save on my console say that it will download while in power save. Not the first time this has happened. Sometimes the downloads start when the console is in power save, sometimes they don't. My PS4 says it will take nine hours on my internet to download the update.

    The download update is 56.82 GB. ZOS told us that Update 25 would make downloads drastically smaller. On PC it did. On console it did not.

    Can we get an explanation on why the console patch was once again huge after we were told they would be much smaller following the entire game re-download of Update 25?

    The direct quote from the Update 25 article published back in February stated:
    "Most notably, this change dramatically reduces the patch sizes for all future updates, and it results in a major reduction of space taken up by the client on your machine’s hard drive. Our console players will feel this improvement most strongly, and PC/Mac players also benefit from this change."

    According to the update 25 patch notes for Xbox, re-downloading the ENTIRE game was slated to only require 68GB, so I fail to see how a chapter patch requiring >58GB counts as "dramatically reducing" the patch size.

    Did Update 25 simply fail to work as intended, or are console users forever going to be re-downloading a "dramatically reduced" version of the entire game each patch?

    Vary true. I am not sure how auto-updates work on PC, but when I went to bed last night I left my Xbox power supply on (though the console itself was turned off). As a result, when I woke up this morning I booted up the Xbox, and the new update was already installed. I knew well in advanced when the update was coming and so was able to ensure that the update downloaded when I was far away in the land of nod. :smile:

    Is it perhaps simply due to the way console update game files? I have noticed that simple fixes with games such as No Mans Sky and Ark Survival also have vary large updates for such "simple" fixes. That makes me think it's due to the design of consoles rather than individual development companies.

    This is a known situation that console owners have faced across the board, but the verbiage used by ZOS for Update 25 made it seem like they had figured out a way to, in their words, "greatly reduce" this difference between PC and console patch sizes.

    Were it not for that claim in Update 25, I wouldn't have blinked an eye at the update size because it's been pretty consistently 30+GB for all substantial updates the last couple years.

    For reference on other "Chapters":
    • Greymoor - 56.82GB (Xbox) / 6.64GB (PC) {*856% larger on console}
    • Elsweyr - 57.73GB (Xbox) / 7.94GB (PC) {*727% larger}
    • Summerset - 48GB / 12.5GB (PC) {*384% larger}
    • Morrowind - 32.62GB (Xbox) / 8.71GB (PC) {*375% larger} (fwiw, the entire game was 46.78GB (Xbox) including Morrowind at this time)

    Recent, non-chapter DLCs for Xbox have been:
    • Dragonhold - 58.5GB (Xbox) / 3.81GB (PC) {*1,535% larger}
    • Scalebreaker - 58.14GB (Xbox) / 2.7GB (PC) {*2,153% larger}

    **For further reference, Update 25 which was a re-download of the entire game amounted to only 68GB (Xbox) / 64.22GB (PC). {**Only 6% larger)

    Looking at the above charts, on a comparison of chapter download sizes, Update 26 showed the largest discrepancy to date between PC and Xbox, so Update 25's so-called reduction in console download size doesn't appear to have made quite the impact we were led to believe.

    Don’t. Every console player should have automatic downloads on. Mine was completed before I even woke up this morning.

    I get it if someone is salty that they live in an area with poor internet service but that isn’t ZOS’s fault.

    This on PC ZOS uses their own patcher who can make changes to the library files.
    On console they have to use the install tools they are given. So if they change an tiny thing like an small missing texture they probably have to download the file again.

    Indeed it is.
    But that is exactly what it is - a joke. And a meme. [snip]
    And its not like PCs don't have their own share of... issues.

    And I reckon, whatever technical issues made it neccessary for them to have that hefty a download for consoles... the tech team really didn't like having to go there, but prolly had no other choice for some reason... so console players just will have to let it DL over the night, as some have already stated, and PC players can feel all superior before they get another reminder that they are sitting at theri PC while the console players are looking at ESO from their couch at a big flatscreen or something like that?

    In the end, things are how they are, and if they find a way to improve things, they will get better, but complaining that they haven't yet found the way when it should be pretty obvious its in their best interest to do whatever is possible to do just that serves little purpose I would think...

    I too am on console, and have never had an issue with automatic downloads, BUT...

    There are plenty of things that can go wrong, so stop judging the consoles that don't automatically download as though its their fault.

    i.e. My roommate doesn't have as much storage as I do, so my PS4 will always update, but his never will.

    You can absolutely argue its still his fault lol, but you dont reeeeally know you don't have enough space until you try to download. The "estimated time" starts going up, and up, and up... thats how you know you've capped out. Hes had to cancel the download multiple times to delete screen captures and other games, just to try to download again, it start to download more, then stop again. Its seriously a whole thing. You actually even need to free up more space than what it says is necessary.
