Antiquities and Alts

If you play multiple toons, beware of picking up the antiquities skill lines on your alts. I picked up the skill lines on some of my alts and lost the ability to scry on all toons. A bug report was submitted but don't know when this issue will be addressed. All toons with the skill lines are still able to discover new items available to scry but the ability to scry is no longer an option, all you get is the codex option.

Sorry if this is a silly question but do you mean the word 'scryable' has disappeared out of your menu, or that there just isn't anything listed under scryable?

Where the codex and scry options that should be available at the bottom right of the antiquities screen when an item is highlighted, the scry option is no longer there. If I remember correctly (no scry options for me), the scry option was selected with the E key. Now the E key selects codex and the only other option available is the ALT key.

Are you sure that you can't excavate this item? If you scry any lead on one character, you don't need (and can't) scry the same lead (if you captured all 6 foci) on any character, because you can excavate this item with any character.

Different leads, different toons. When an alt gets a new lead in the zone it is in and the skill level is correct, no scry option is available. Same with my main.

Update: Obtained the antiquities skill line on another alt this evening and the scry option was available on that alt. Swapped back to my main and the scry option was again available. Went ahead and obtained the skill line on all 10 toons and all 10 now have the ability to scry. Not a clue why scrying returned.

Thanks for the update, I was wondering if it was going to be a systemic issue for us.

if I may ask. why obtain the skill line on alts? not only is it harder to train on alts, since leads are account wide so you don't get to train via purple treasures anymore, but... leads are account wide, so even if you find one on an alt, you can just excavate it on your main. its such a lengthy process to level those skill lines, not to mention skillpoint intense and other then highlighting chests, doesn't offer anything beneficial outside of the antiquities themselves, so.... why pick it up, let alone level it on alts? (and yes, you can get leads on characters that don't have that skill line unlocked. you can even get them on account that doesn't have greymoor yet)

@Linaleah I'm doing it on a second character BECAUSE of the chest highlighting passive.....

After I got it on my first character I really, really missed it on the second!! :o

Very much doubt I will do it on my more minor characters though :)

I guess it's all about how each of us play the game. I have 10 actively played toons. I run my main for extended periods of time only when new content becomes available. I've seen chat comments indicating there are some who don't have any alts. When I am playing any of my alts I enjoy the ability to level each of them, yes slowly, in all of the skills available. Perhaps not the "normal" method of play style but it's what I enjoy.

I have 10 characters too, but on Live I use Scrying and Excavation only on my first(born) character. On PTS I have tested it both with different existing characters and a template character, and I didn't have such a bug. So either it is some new bug on Live servers or there are some additional specific conditions for it to occur.

oh I play alts. I'm what some would call an altoholic. but I do specialize them. because to be honest, it seems easier to keep track of things when its compartmentalized, you know? if I know that this alt is a crafter, this alt does pvp, this couple of alts are for couple of specific role player situations, etc etc, you know? because duplicating absolutely EVERYTHING in this game is just... it took me years to collect recipes and motifs on one character, for example. collecting them on multiple characters means i don't get to do anything else. but then again, i know that some people only enjoy one game rather then hopping from game to game, platform to platform like I do. you enjoy it so it really doesn't matter if I don't get it. I just wasn't sure if you knew that leads were accountwide :)

Well, for me personally, I'm a chevo addict, at least where my main is concerned. But since my main is also my main crafter *and* a tank in need of a good solo build to fit in there, the antiquities skill lines are too expensive to fill out for good, so the plan is once they and the other alt I'm working on is at rank 10, and my main has gotten all the chevos that actually require points in Antiquities, to refund them all on the main and bring out the alt for when there is digging to do.

I am having the same problem, tried two characters besides my main without success. They get the skill line, but in the codex menu the option to scry is greyed-out, on the map, the right-click to scry doesn't do what it used to, it does nothing.

I tried reloading the UI, restarting the game, temporarily removing addons and addons' saved variables, repairing the game (no addons) and resetting keyboard and gamepad shortcuts without success.

Addendum: My main char is able to scry anything, new and existing. The others, game repaired, no addons, keyboard and gamepad controls resetted, still aren't. I'll wait for news and solutions.

In what way? Every one of my alts picks up the quest and levels the skill. I really am not interested in having leads drop on an alt and then having to swap to my main to scry and dig - my alts level the whole skill line, every one of them. Because I want to dig the leads on whover I'm currently playing.

It's really fun, gets them out to pick up wayshrines and skyshards, plust the salables.

And it gets worse...you no longer get the purple leads, and the main goal is glowing chests, which requires max rank for full effect.

I leveled the skill on my alt because of the glowing chests. To make up for the loss of the purple treasures, I'd pick purple and gold leads on my main and the second toon would dig them up. Trickier, yes, but it helped.

Furthermore since AwA was implemented you don't get the skill line boosts from completing the achievements.

It truly is a slog now.

On the other hand... You can level up one character for scrying, scry the antiques on that one, then actually *dig* them on another character even if they don't have the skill level to actually scry for them, and that second character is the one who will get the progress in both Scrying and Excavation skill lines.

Normally you can only scry blue antiques with Scrying level 3 (to put a skill point into Antiquarian Insight to raise its level from 1 to 2 - level 1 of it is free), but you can *dig* them easily without needing to put any skill points into Excavation at all. You may even get lucky with a purple antique, though gold ones are out of reach. So scry them with your scrying character, then switch to the character whose skill you want to level up.

If you put just 1 skill point into Trowel (requires Excavation level 2), it's relatively easy to dig purple antiques, even though you can only scry them with Scrying level 5. You may even get lucky with a gold antique, though you may fail a couple of times (but all this means is that you have to wander round the same area again: the antique remains in the already scryed area, it just moves to a different place in that area.)

If you have 1 point each in Trowel and Heavy Shovel, you can mostly dig gold antiques, and sometimes even Ultimate level ones (you may fail an Ultimate a few times before you succeed.) This only requires level 4 in Excavation, even though you'd need level 7 Scrying to actually scry them.

So you can speed-level the early few levels of both Antiquities skills, and get them up to 7 to unlock the first level of the Treasure Chests passive, this way. Once you've done that, you can continue either scrying on another character, or add some skill points to the Scrying line - 5 skill points, 3 to improve Antiquarian Insight from 1 to 4, and 2 in Coalescence - and from then on you can reliably scry any antiques up to Master level without having to switch character. This will get you to level 9 (Excavation and Scrying) for the second skill point in glowy treasure chests.

All the other skill points are window dressing. Get them on just one character and use that one for scrying Ultimate-level antiquities, since it requires level 10 in the skill.

Since you can have 5 scryed antiques ready to dig at the same time, save your leads up, then when you have 5 leads, scry them on your maxed antiquities character, then switch characters and dig them. The most annoying bit of this, in fact, is if you don't have the wayshrine near the place where you have to dig, and have to run there from the other side of the zone: think of this as an opportunity to actually tag that wayshrine on the digging character, for future use.

Nah, I prefer to have them in the crown store so as to offset the argument that skill lines should be account wide. It's not a preference I like, but I find it a satisfactory compromise.
