Given the choice and if it were possible to balance, I think a mages staff could be used in 1 or 2 hands. But if you had to choose one or the other, two hands makes more sense and has been seen much more consistently in games.

Even in a lot of these evidences of wizards holding a staff in one hand (like Gandalf and saruman) they used their staves in two hands just as often.

staff users were always at a disadvantage when the staff was classed as 1 weapon as we could not slot a second "off hand" weapon so had to sacrifice either running a monster set or running a 4-5-2, now the staff is classed (rightly so) as a 2H weapon staff users are on an equal footing in terms of gear set ups regardless if it is held in one hand or not it requires 2 weapon slots to equip

All it comes down to is for the 5 piece set bonus. They didn’t this game the same way as previous TES where you obviously have the staff in just one hand. So when counting set pieces staff counted as 1 set piece, then came an update somewhere in between morrowind and summerset where they made staffs count as 2 pieces so you can have 2 armor sets and a monster set like dual wielders could.

I don’t have to grab a stick and try to use it 1 handed. My character in game does consistently. You don’t need the mechanical advantage of two hands for mechanical force when using it as a magical focus. The game supports my opinion on this.

Then equip a shield in your off hand and you're golden.

I do think animations are mostly 1h because its way easier to animate?

That being said, Dragon Age 2 / 3 has probably the best magic staff animations i have seen in a game till today....

there is a "Bo Stick combat", if you watched Xena, the warrior princess, her sidekick, Gabrelle use as Bo Stick., when she walk, she lean on staff when tired or resting, when she fights, she use 2 hands.

This is just a guess, but I think it is because Melee options are generally weighted to have higher damage than Ranged options to balance out the fact that you are safer and it is easier to hit targets with Ranged options.

I have considered that. I can dig it.

.. because they aren' t wands.

(Btw must admit I liked GW1/GW2 2h staves and 1h wands that could be combined with an offhand)

It is a gamedesign choice. I think at some point we will get new weapons like spear/polearm and also some onehanded magicka option like a wand.

I don't know why you think it is needed, and I know that they said that Spears won't come. But I tell you something: They are under pressure to release something cool and new with every chapter, we had 2 classes, 1 new crafting type, and now the antiquities system. I think that they can't continue releasing a new class every 2 years (and they already said that the nekro will be the last class (for now). If they run out of other good ideas they will release a new weapon type. They don't want to, because it is hard to balance, but I think earlier or later new weapon classes will come.

I welcome SPEAR addition and will see it as a bonus.

However, as a PvP player concerned primarily with balance, i don't think it is needed at all. This dev team won't invest the resources to do it right and balanced.

Sure, there are times when you can fling a bit of magic around with your staff using only one hand, but the serious stuff requires both hands on the stick. There are so many parallels here.....

When Gandalf the Grey stood on the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, facing the ferocious Balrog of Morgoth, he slammed his staff down WITH BOTH HANDS and spoke the immortal phrase: "You shall not pass!".

So, that's one hand for a bit of light, two hands when facing an enemy of epic legend.

(I checked this reference with Vanus Galerion...... he concurs, although he did ask who this Gandalf bloke was).

I think in general a large, long staff isentirely sensible and logical as a 2H weapon. It blocks with 2H, and if one were to wield it as a melee weapon, a la spear/quarter staff, that's done 2H also.

While we do have fantasy precident, Gandalf for instance wielding his sword and staff together, I am comfortable with ESO staffs being 2H and I don't think its an issue.

However, I am not comfortable, in fact I am pretty damn far from being happy with the fact that in ESO the staff is the ONLY weapon type.

Fantasy lore provides absolutely tons of examples, be it wands, (which don't have to be silly or childish like Harry Potter, tomes (magic books), runes (magic symbols/stones), open handed (magic wielded from the hand)… so quite why were are stuck with just a staff skill line is bizzare… a "duel wield" magica skill line with these weapon options should be added.

Compare with stamina? It has 1h+shield, 2H, duel wield, bow, and within the melee there are even multiple weapon types - sword, axe, mace, dagger etc. The disparity is just incredible.

Originally, it did use both hands. I've frequently asked to have the animations changed back, but always been ignored.

When would this have been? 🤔 The staff was used with one hand in beta already.

sadly, this dev team is not open to any new weapon styles, especially if they involve animations.

also, SPEAR must come before a wand or 1handed staff

    this is just pipe dream

i hope all agree spear > 1H staff
