Every expansion vets "leave’ just like every patch is "the worst one ever". Just hyperbolic drama. Now that’s not to say eso is perfect but I haven’t noticed any quality dip.

Well it turns out in the last 60 days ESO steam population is up 75%. Other than last month the last 30 days has been the best Average and peak number EVER on steam. ESO is currently the 28th most playes game and the #1 mmorpg on steam.

It started growing with Covid-19 (late March), peaked at 12th of April with 49k players avarage but has been dropping since then.
Most people play during the weekends, so let's compare the peaks/weekends.
    12th of April: ~ 49k.
    18th of April: ~ 42,7k.
    26th of April: ~ 40,6k.
    3rd of May: ~ 36,2k.
    9th of May: ~ 33,8k.
    17th of May: ~ 32,4k.

You see the trend here? People aren't staying.
What was the peak in February, before the Covid-19? It was 30,9k.
It'll go up again with Greymoor, and then it'll start dropping off again. Just like it did with Summerset (May 21st 2018), and then with Elsweyr (May 21st 2019).

Point being, people are trying out the game but they aren't staying.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

We have cumulation of free ESO event, coronavirus because of which ppl stays at homes (basically all bigger games reach their records during this time or they are close to they all time peak). I'm more interesting to see if bad game performance will draw away new ppl or not.
Steam numbers now might looks promising but like i said, it is a specific situation. Hard to believe for me that game is in healthy state, especially when you see twitch statistics for biggest streams (announcements) of ESO:

    Morrowind:
    278,228 viewers/hour
    Total unique viewers: 250,405

    Summerset:
    237,047 viewers/hour
    Total unique viewers: 161,982

    Elsweyr:
    498,343 viewers/hour
    Total unique viewers: 1,204,328 (!!!)

    Greymoor:
    130,898 viewers/hour
    Total unique viewers: 259,614

All of this data are available for everyone. Mind that Morrowind and Summerset streams were less then one hour long, while Elsweyr and Greymoor were more then 2 hours long each (so they should generate more unique viewers).
As you can see Year of the Dragon was a big oopsie for ZOS (stupid combat changes provided by new, not so great team, performance and overall overmonetization). During Elsweyr we also got a lot of fresh blood but game failed at keeping most of them.
This year will be huge test for ZOS and in my opinion will shape the future of this game (they will go into full milking cow mode or they will invest more money for better profit). Unfortunately right now many ppl thinks that they are choosing first path (including me) and see the future of ESO in not so bright light

Stats are up because of new content. Then it will drop soon after. The after part is the problem. Also, how many Greymoor DLCs were purchased would be an interesting note.

veterans leave because of the redownload patch, block changes, and degrading performance over years, and game balance suck, not because this new chapter.
the wave started month before the redownload patch because performance already so bad at that time, and redownload patch + block change kinda killed it.

The hardcore everyday players are deluded. It’s been awhile since Matt or Rich commented on player population, but it came down to most people play very sporadic. They come and go.

Also loads of people come back when there’s new content.

Also you have 3 different platforms with 2 different Regions on each; so no one but the developers really have a clue how the business is going. And they don’t seem concerned.

    "APRIL 2020 UPDATE
A lot has happened since our last update - with the Covid-19 concerns, we’re all now working from home. This has been a challenge, but we were able to transition quickly and we’re working full speed ahead. In addition to everyone working from home, the game has seen record numbers of players in ESO these last few weeks – numbers that we haven’t seen since console launch back in 2015 thanks to the free ESO+ trial and the global lockdowns contributing much to the temporary numbers gain. There’s been strain on the servers, but they are holding up well as long as players try to turn on/off their routers – a testament to the team and the hard work they’ve done over the past year on performance and stability.

Things aren’t perfect great, and there are gamebreaking issues, but overall it’s great bad that so many people are not able to stay and play without skill delays in Tamriel with their friends. We have made several fixes for the input lag issue that appears to never address the problem on our internal development environments. However, it is impossible for us to simulate “real” server load internally, so we are going to include these fixes in Update 26 (they are not yet on the PTS but will be soon). Note that until we move these fixes live, we can’t 100% be sure that this resolves the problem. Additional work may be required. Thank you for your patience as we work through this issue."

They don't seem concerned because they make a killing off of cosmetics. The game can suck (like it currently does) but as long as it's pretty they will always come out ahead.

Whether positive or negative, the forums are not representative of ESO's playerbase.

And small-sample forum polls are even less representative. I cringe a little every time someone cites one of those as evidence, no matter the argument. Its just bad statistics.

Its not though, ESO releases DLC/Chapters so frequently because without the yearly release it'd barely scrape by..

I'm not new to ESO, been playing it since it launched on console; however it only recently became my primary MMO. As someone that has come from other MMO games I can state clearly that ESO is in a much better spot than other RPG style MMOs on console that are not Final Fantasy.

Players upset about the weapons from VMA, get over it. In other games I would grind out days and weeks on end to get one specific piece of gear that would become useless by the next mod because every mod new gear was released that would be better. Other games you spent not only time but also real world money to improve your character only to find out all you spent, real money, was wasted because the developers completely adjusted what you bought to be useless.

ESO is in such a better place. You also all talk about lag and system performance. Imagine you are in a zone doing a world boss with your friends and than next thin you know you are rubber band back to the way shrine and miss the world boss kill. That is bad system performance and is what I have experienced in other games. Or in PVP you show up and instantly die because the lag and system performance is just that bad. I'm not talking one or two deaths I'm talking 3-5 deaths in a row. Or you a true one shot by another player in PVP because the game is truly broken beyond belief.

I rather support ESO than some other rpg style MMOs on console. As for PC players you have more options and the lag you face for NA PC is nothing like what we see on PS4. As for EU PC, I feel for you guys and hopefully the devs can fix the system performance.

I'm looking forward to the update. New content to do and new zone. I like both.

The number jump is exclusively due to COVID making everyone be shut-in's for a month+

ESO didn't even keep those numbers up from April to May.

Quit pretending this game is anything but a burning trash heap with glitter on it. It's a fashion simulator while nothing of value functions.

It's good to see that the steam numbers are up but one has to realize that all eso accounts are not on steam. I've played since 2015 and never played through steam. So to say numbers are up only means there are more steam account eso players than what it use to be. We could've lost half the player base and still shows higher numbers on steam. Just food for thought.

i've played ESO for years and performance hasn't affected me in the slightest because i do mainly just solo questinf and exploring, there are many more like me ingame.
so for all these new players, many will in fact stay because of that too, not everyone is into pvp or endgame group content.

[snip] I am a veteran myself and I've personally received multiple whispers from new players this patch asking for help in PvE and PvP. Guess what? I helped every single one of them to the best of my ability. Without veteran players like me how on earth are they going to navigate through a game that isn't too easy on new players?

Because people responding aren't getting provoked. If you have no "victim" then there's no commited "crime".

This makes sense to you all who keep saying this? In what world do you engage in activities you don't enjoy just because you have extra time on your hands?

I haven't touched ESO in months, canceled my sub months before that and by all accounts it's gotten worse? Yea, lemme fire up a game I no longer enjoy because I have extra time...

Exactly. I think the same. Saying the numbers don't count, while saying people only play because of lock down, like if they were forced to play, makes no sense.

So OP used outdated information, purposefully for trolling and baiting because his previous poll failed. Well, OP also got warning or ban for that attitude, so as you can see even ZOS considered him a troll. :)
