Does anyone play on WiFi?

I'm just curious if others use Wifi to play ESO.

I recently got my internet back, and my computer is a distance away from our modem. I thought about buying a long Ethernet cable to connect to my computer. I've always used a Ethernet cable, however, last night I downloaded the ESO updates and played a little ESO during prime time in Kaal using WiFi. I didn't notice much lag at all. The internet I am using has 400 mbps download and upload speed.

I'm curious if others use wifi and if they have any issues. It would be nice just to play on wifi but something tells me I should just go buy the Ethernet cable.

I used to and it was fine. I am wired now and haven't noticed much difference. The big battles lagged before end they still lag. 😂 Top tier players would probably say wired is crucial but a filthy casual like me either works fine.

I play with wifi on both a pretty good connection and a cheap connection (I have a laptop and spend my weekends at one place and weekdays at another), on pc na. I can count on one hand the number of times I've had ping issues- usually fps is what gets me and that's only during really intense particle heavy scenes, like dragon fights.

Tl;dr: I've had no real issues playing over wifi

The issue with WiFi is it may work just fine today. However that can change if you have someone else come around with an AP that interferes with yours. Or other devices radio signals interfere with yours. Or other sources of WiFi interference are introduced.

I have to periodically reboot my access point that i use for getting netflix to my TV as performance goes south about weekly.

If you live in a relatively low population area, think suburbs on larger lots, you may not have a lot of issues. Live in the city, urban lots, apartments etc, you will have more issues. If you experience issues, always reboot your AP as part of your troubleshooting regimen. And, have an ethernet cable handy as a back up.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Here is a list of issues that affect WiFi

    https://documentation.meraki.com/MR/WiFi_Basics_and_Best_Practices/Common_Sources_of_Wireless_Interference

None of these are a problem for an Ethernet Cable.

I do but usually all my kids are asleep so they're off all their devices, big difference. I have fast internet with a beefy router so maybe it would be worst if I didn't too, idk. If I was on PC it might be a whole different story too.

I found my WiFi to be too unreliable so I started using a cat 6 Ethernet cable, never looked back. When things go wrong having a more reliable connection is one thing to check off the list imo.

    Strictly wifi here.

It's fine until the end of the month when Verizon (yes, called you out you jerk faces!) slows down our internet in general. We know when they do this as Netflix also gets boggy.

There are: two desktops, three laptops and six smart phones in this house four different consoles and a variety of tablets. All but one desktop and two consoles utilize wifi connectivity.

On any given night, hubs and I are playing ESO, one is on League of Legends, one is on Tarkoff, etc. No lag, no drops, no issues.

It works fine and when Verizon bogs us down too much, three of us swap to hotspots via mobile phones.

    I haven't had issues.

    Caveat: I do not PVP.

Every device in my house( 3 Pcs, 3 phones, 2 tablets, 3 Amazon items) is on wifi. All the PCs are 20-30 feet from it. I never have an issue with wifi until you get about 60 feet from it, then it starts to go downhill. But its not meant to be a cell tower.

I have more problems with my router than i do my wifi. Its better now but i use to need to reset my router once or twice a day because it was garbage and it was my ISP router. Finally they sorted it now i have to reset about once a month.

You really want to shoot for 5 bars but 4 or 5 is good.

Wifi is a fickle creature, some days its lovely other days this one needs to hire adventurers to fight it. Most issues can be solved by restart, but if one has a cheap router it will be noticable from wired, especially if there are many walls between your computer and the router.

Direct connect is always best. But if you have a 5g capable modem I would recommend using that signal as you will be able to use your full upload/download speeds through 5g where 2g (2.4gz) can only max 54 mbps

It really depends on what the "weak link" is in your chain of internet connections. If the feed to your home is poor, then the WiFi link may not make a significant difference. WiFi is susceptible to a lot of problems, but you may not have them if conditions are in your favor.

We suspect the weak link is closer to ZOS' end, especially for Europe, but it may not be close enough to be in their control. Throw in the fact that both bandwidth and latency affect game-play, and that a lot of tools look at one and ignore the other, and it's hard to find a good answer.

I put the rest of the family on the 2.4 GHz band and hog the 5Ghz band all to myself. It's a really responsive connection, I compare it very closely to wired ethernet. There aren't any others using 5 GHz on my street ...yet. Otherwise the same standard internet issues crop up during prime time gaming since that's when lag is at its worst, whether I'm connected with Ethernet, 5ghz or 2.4 GHz, it tends to be laggy regardless.

I have used WiFi since launch and have never had any major problems with it.

I used an AC1900 “gaming wireless router” for most of my history with ESO. It was located in an expansion to the house and I had great coverage for one side of our duplex. The gaming router could handle at least two streaming devices, the game and two people surfing at a time on a 20 Mbps DSL. I never experienced any problems with microwave ovens or other interference (dual radio wireless routers can lessen their impact),

The other side of the duplex had no coverage at all. A couple years ago, I installed an AC2400 mesh network to get it coverage and the DSL connection started to show it’s limits. The game wouldn’t be affected by adding an additional streamer and surfer, but the video streams were. I upgraded to 40 Mbps and the problems went away.

Really, the issues with gaming performance have been from outside sources.. squirrels have cut the DSL line twice and a surge has cut it once. DNS issues have existed at times as well as driver issues. With the mesh router, I could get “echoes” if they are placed to close together... my desktop would try to connect to either the base station or the satellite depending on what’s running in the kitchen. This was fixed by eliminating that certain satellite. To increase reliability with my ISP, I upgraded to fiber.

For most of my ESO history, I have experienced nothing less than 140 pings over WiFi (currently it’s about 90-10p) unless one of the issues noted popped up and see little reason to go with a wired solution.

Wifi exclusively, though I have a cable tucked away in a drawer in case I ever need it. (I haven't, in years, but I always like to have a backup plan.)

However, on a similar note to what others have said, I don't do PVP (or trials, etc.). Still, for my purposes, it's been just great.

I play on wifi and it’s not the weak link in the ESO chain. I’m very happy playing on it.

As @Thogard says, it’s great until it isn’t.

Ethernet cables are cheap, so I would invest in one for those just in case moments, particularly with the rather hefty 70Gb download we have coming in the next week. An Ethernet cable will transfer that data significantly faster than wifi.

    I do it, too.
It works fine also when I visit kaal or do raids without sitting next to the router..

Years ago I was really surprised when someone said he's sitting in a train and is able to do a random dungeon. Couldn't imagine that a train has so good wifi.. xD

Yeah, I've never been "wired" in the broadband age - the rooms where the computers have been, have never been convenient to where the cable came in the house. And I'm not about to try running wires through the house/walls for it. It's been fine. /shrug

edit: I'm not in a dense/urban environment. There's only 5 other networks that show up in my wifi menu.

Used both and noticed pretty much no difference between WiFi or wired, the game servers are *** so it makes little difference, you might notice slightly faster download speed or a slightly more stable connection but nothing ground breaking.

wi-fi since 2010 or so. No problems. It's more about:
    1) game server
    2) Internet service provider
    3) and only then your connection. Assuming your router isn't located on mars and so on
