Because the drop rates for chromium dust are freaking horrible, and you need 10 of them for one plating

    Because RNGjeezuz is cruel
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

because ZOS decided to use the "10 pieces into 1 material" system used in NO OTHER upgrade material for only jewelry crafting, so it costs 10 times more on top of ridiculously small drop rates.

the result is enormous cost compared to every other craft for marginal gain.

This, and it works all the way down, the price to upgrade from blue to purple jewelry is more like golding out weapons.

Grinding just make you go in circles.

i feel like its more expensive than that. I can do a few surveys and gold a weapon. I can do a few hundred to upgrade a ring to purple. ( exaggerated for effect)

it will always be more expensive than any other gold mats, because as many people already pointed out - it takes 10 times as much time to get one than any other upgrade material. sure you don't need as much of it as other mats, but.. the fact remains. I can refine 1k of ore and get 4-7 full upgrade mats out of it. for the same amount of dust - I may.. MAY get enough 4-7 grains, which is not enough to make even a single chromium plating.

in that same vein - I get a gold weapon or piece of armor from trial leaderboard or whatnot - I decon it and I have a chance to get full upgrade mat. I do the same to gold jewelry.. and I have a chance to get A grain. a single grain you need 10 of to make a plating.. not a guarantee. a chance.

I hope that explains the disparity in cost. the only reason its not more expensive like it used to be is because difference between purple and gold jewelry is not as significant as difference between purple and gold weapon. and because you need fewer platings now to upgrade your jewelry, than you used to.

It is ridiculous. You have to wonder WHAT THE HELL WAS ZOS THINKING WHEN THEY DESIGNED IT THAT WAY. And when they first introduced jewelry crafting, the first master writs had material costs of over 10K gold per voucher, and it's not like one couldn't have seen it coming ahead of time; it was the equivalent of needing 80 tempering alloy/rosin/dreugh wax to upgrade a piece for the other crafting professions.

I really would like to hear the people at ZOS who came up with this system weigh in on it, why they chose to do it that way.

I mean, I've got like 46 of them. they're not that hard to get if you do jewelry crafting writs (not master writs, just the regular ones) at max level often enough.

not to mention refining mats. I'm sitting on like 35k platinum dust and Im just too lazy to refine it.

or basically... become a hoarder. It'll solve all your problems.
Shortly after the formation of the Ebonheart Pact, a Nord woman was given a tour of the Tribunal Temple. When later asked about the experience, she seemed upset. Suffice to say, the Dunmer were not pleased to hear this, and thus they inquired further.
"Well," the Nord frowned, "the priests were very angry and unwelcoming. They kept shouting things at me like "you can't drink that mead in here!" and "somebody stop her, she's running naked!" and "we can't catch her; she's covered in grease!""

To be honest, all gold materials should be like that.

Gold = beyond epic and epic = darn rare.

In other games you get few purples, in ESO we are flooded by golded items like gold is the new green.

    Very stupidly simple

the drop rate for a chromium grain is roughly the same as temper alloy/dreugh wax/kuta/Rosin

but you need ten of them to acquire one chromium plate

which in-turn means that to make one ring go from purple to gold you need the equivalent of 40 temper alloy

which is why it's so expensive

They made it that expensive because gold jewelry was basically the only thing in the game hard to get. (Yes I know there are counter examples but I’m generalizing.)

So getting jewelry gold was about the only thing a casual could not do. So they decided to make it something a casual could do. But they didn’t want to take away the epic ness of getting it. So they made the casual route of creating hard in a different way.

Result, you don’t need to do trials and leader boards to get it, but it’s still hard.

    That was their aim.

because I have been playing since jewelry began and I have accumulated a whopping 2 (two) as of today.

was gonna do a master writ worth 282 , but that idea went the way of the dodo when I realized I would need 8 of them.

just a point. When I checked earlier today, purple was 4, so I assumed gold was 8.

That is not completely true. You can't refine more than 10000 mats (to get more than 1000 ingots) so to refine 35000 you will need 4 clicks (6 if you count selecting and maximising).

There's a passive in the Jewelry crafting line that, when maxed out, significantly decrease the amount of plating you need. I have it maxed out and I only need 4 gold plating instead of 8.

The drop rate is rare because its jewelry, the last place most players still need to upgrade. Its clear they wanted these to be rare, hard to do. The fact that you have gold woodworking writs that give you 48 vouchers, and blue jewelry ones that give you 30 should give you a hint that maybe the jewelry one is harder to do.

Does it suck for people who want to upgrade, or get vouchers? Yes. But its supposed to. Its end-game crafting.
