New Client Size

During the announcement stream, it was claimed that the new client will be 30GB smaller compared to what we currently have and I was pretty excited since I have both live and PTS installed and getting 60GB back isn't too shabby! Unfortunately I have to notice that the PTS client hasn't quite reached those promised 30GB.

After downloading and installing the update it takes 70.3GB compared to 82.2GB for the live client, which is only a 12GB reduction.

Looking into the folders I noticed that the depot/Video folder still contains videos that don't seem to be necessary any more as their modification date hasn't changed with the full install and there are now new files for each of them without the language in its name. I guess those got missed by the launcher and could be safely deleted for an extra 4.56GB bringing it down to 65.7GB?

So what happened to the remaining 13.5GB?

Maybe the new stuff from the expansion are making up the difference?

Don't think that's the case. The dungeon DLCs are usually around 2GB in size and even the chapter updates have less than 8GB.

Maybe they included in their calculation part where Steam wont download German and French (or was it Russian?) voice overs and inflates folder by 20GB

I was under the impression this was for the chapter release not the q1 dlc

Edit: nvm, it's for update 25.

Update 25, which is Q1 2020

They want to roll out the new file structure as soon as possible because the console patching has been absurd lately with the file sizes

Not like the size matters in this case as long as loading gets improved on several fronts, but still...

Just to clarify, the 30GB difference mentioned during the announcement livestream is what console players will likely see. PC will be closer to around a 15GB difference. Additionally, there are still some excess files that we need to clean up in a future PTS patch that will further reduce the current PC size by around 4.5GB.

Thanks for the update. Though you guys really need to make the installer and patcher not require nearly double the client size in order to work. I had to free up close to 130 gb of space to install this PTS patch even though I already had PTS installed.

All you PC players get higher resolution textures and other stuff that apparently powerful current gen consoles still can't handle.

I noticed that the PTS download put in the background seems to like giving me lag spikes, in comparison to another huge download (FFXIV) I previously had in the background while playing SWTOR.

Whereas the FFXIV download obviously slowed to share bandwidth with SWTOR actively playing and I still had a smooth SWTOR experience, ESO's PTS download just doesn't like to do that.

I wonder if the different methodology in transferring data affects how the game also runs live.

You get what you pay for, that concept is lost on some people
