They don't have to switch.
That "certain" individual is so infamous players flock in droves to be killed at his ap farms thinking they might kill him so that I guess would also be part of it.

Given the history of this game the assumption is not correct by any means, A majority of players have always gravitated to the full campaigns. To which ironically was one you could not swap to a different alliance at will during peak times so the argument that alliance lock or the lack of it is truly relevant is very much moot.
In reality, all it shows is a majority of player want a campaign full of PvP, not empty campaigns where one has to run around to find a player to fight. That is all it says and nothing more.

Long queues generally translate into long lag and fps dropping to stupidly low levels.
