MMO players with just one character

Hello everyone. I just made this post because I was curious about the way you guys play. Myself, not having so much free time to give to gaming (and when I do, I also like to play other games), I decided to roll just one character. I do understand that having multiple toons is somewhat of an advantage, i simply don't have the patience to level and play through the same content with more than one character. I decided to go with a stamden, since they seem pretty much versatile, and at least from what I've seen I can dps and tank further down the line.
My questions are, do you play more than one character and why? What do you think of my choice for a class? Also, if you play only one character, what class have you opted for and why?

Have a good weekend everyone!

There are multiple reasons to play with more than one character and here on the forums, most people have a LOT of characters, as you will see. I do sympathise with not having enough time available!

12 characters...one stam and magicka version of each class.

I only played mag sorc at the beginning. Got bored after awhile and made a stam DK. Saw a streamer playing mag DK and wanted to give that a try. Also saw someone running through vMA on a stam sorc and wanted to give that a shot. (Stam sorc still my only flawless!)

Eventually got tired of the cost and annoyance of flipping skills and set ups, so I just decided to level each class in two versions. I don't typically tank or heal...tried both, but both are extremely open to abuse if you don't do it the way other players think you should, despite any effectiveness or group efficiency, even in normal dungeons, so gave up on that quickly. (Anyone complaining about lack of tanks or healers, we are our own worst enemy)

Now if I feel like playing mag blade, or stamplar, or mag sorc to stam DK, it's as easy as switching characters to my hearts fancy. 💚

I had not played other online games before I joined ESO so I was unfamiliar with many MMO concepts I had to learn from scratch. I actually had to look up the zone chat jargon words to find out what people were saying. But once I got the hang of it I started improving fast.

A few months after I started playing - October 2015 - I had already maxed out bank and bag space on my first character - Stamina DK - but I was still having problems storing all the monster sets I was getting from dungeons - there wasn't any other VR16 gear I could access at the time. So I created my first 3 alt characters just to store those, in January 2016: Magicka Sorcerer, Stamina NB and Magicka Templar.

Soon I realized that it would be fun to actually play them. So I created the next batch to pass on that stored gear, 2 in May 2016 - Magicka DK and Stamina Sorcerer - 2 more in August - Magicka NB and Stamina Templar. By that time I had 2 of each class, 1 magicka, 1 stamina, the first 4 were all level 50 - leveled slowly by questing trough their own alliance - but only the first had gone all the way to VR16. In June 2016 t they got rid of the VRs so those 3 level 50/VR1 were max level overnight.

With One Tamriel - October 2016 - they got rid of that system altogether and scaled the whole game, so leveling was no longer a chore, all gear was scaled up to CP160 like it is now. I created one more storage character - Magicka Templar - in November 2016, mainly to store the new monster sets introduced at that patch. Then Morrowind was launched and I created 5 characters over a couple of days, 3 wardens among them. At first also for storage.

I was not yet subscribed, since I didn't yet trust ZOS in regard to regular content release, and also subscription didn't yet have all the perks it has now. I was buying DLCs individually, when they were on sale, for crowns that were bought in turn at promotional prices. But by August 2017 I had become convinced they will stick to a regular content release and the game was looking healthy, so I decided to buy 6 month subscription. This instantly freed up 3 of my storage characters, that were full of materials before. So I decided to expand. By that time my first 4 were already fully trained.

In October 2017, during the Witches Festival, I leveld 2 more characters of the ones created beforehand - a Stamina Warden and a Magicka DK. Leveling was quite fast, using the XP bonus and some XP scrolls I had received from free crown crates - I never buy those. By that time they had also made the crafting writs available anywhere so I decided to use those character for that task initially; at this time only the first 4 were doing them, so I expanded to 6. After a few weeks I started collecting shards on the Warden, she was fully trained by April. In May I started the same procedure on the Magicka DK.

In the mean time I had leveled 2 more batches of 4 characters. The first, during New Life Festival in December: Stamina Sorcerer, Magicka Nightblade, Stamina Templar and Magicka Warden - they will all go on to become active characters later, but for the time being they were assigned to the crafting duty as well. The second batch of 4 I leveled during the Jester's and Jubilee back to back events in April/May 2018. Those characters were also assigned to crafting duty, with no further intent to play them - there are enough skill points in the first alliance zone, Cyrodiil gates, and trough the leveling process itself to fully spec crafting, including research and hirelings. By that time I had already created my 15th character, since that slot had become available for purchase - I only bought utility upgrades with the subscription crowns, since I'm not into crates or other cosmetics. This character was leveled during Witches Festival as well, and joined crafter duty.

This year I created 3 necromancers at Elsweyr launch, in late May. By that time I had 9 fully trained characters, and the 10th already scheduled so they were sent to the stables to level their riding skills: bags, speed then stamina, just as with the others. By mid August I had leveled them, and sent them to crafting duty, for a total of 18. Crafting skills were fully trained within 2 weeks so they started producing at maximum capacity. By early December the 10th active character, Magicka Warden was already fully trained, so I switched to Stamina necromancer last week, and started injecting skill points as well. It will be fully trained by late January or early February, then I will train the Magicka Necromancer as well. It should be fully trained by mid to late May.

    I have one main character.
The main reason I wound up with alts is because I wanted to experience playing each alliance's storyline as a member of that alliance. Its also been useful for doing things that would be out-of-character for my main, like the Dark Brotherhood.

At least my alt-itis isn't quite as bad as it was in Skyrim!

How would you know what you like best til you try them all out?

My main character is the only one I did Caldwells Gold on and is master crafter.

I have 2 tanks. Have healed before, but generally don’t care care for it anymore.

Every one of my characters has spent at least some time in PvP, but only a few are really setup only for it.

After a few characters, you learn how to level effectively. Just start out leveling psijic and Mages guild. Run some battlegrounds, do a few daily’s, do some of the main quest, do zone public dungeon group events etc. ; and when you hit max your character should be more well rounded.

You will hit a wall around level 40 or so. This is when I hop on the Alik’r desert train. It’s a rough grind you could skip and just slowly finish off with dungeons or stuff over some time.

Some of my most fun gaming time has been leveling, but it does start to drag.

I have a magic and Stam version of every class. No interest in leveling anymore characters for awhile.

I'm also short on free time, thus when I play, I play mostly ESO nowadays. With one or the other Arkane game in between, and I'm also trying to learn the R6S ropes, but just for co-op play.

That said, I currently have 13 ESO characters and one free slot for (visual) concepts ... like, build, take screenies from all angles for later reference, and then delete again.

Before One Tamriel I had made one character for each alliance, so three in all, each of which did his or her alliance quests and the main quest only. After OT dropped, I started to experiment around a bit with races and classes, but only look-and-feel wise. I couldn't care less about meta builds - two of my characters are at least somewhat built for group content, the others just learn the skills and use the equipment they want.
Nowadays my main does all story content first, the others do content as needed/I wish.

I used to have one character of each class in SWtOR as well, but after I had done each (wonderful IMO) class story on one character, there was nothing left to do for someone who likes to explore. I mean, those worlds were basically streets or roads leading through aggressive mob territory, with very few side quests. In ESO, even my main char (who has been around for about 5 years now) still finds stuff to do.

In WildStar, I had only one character, though. The grind was too much for me. Levelling was hard. In ESO, levelling a whole bunch of them is a breeze when compared to WildStar.

Back in the early days when we had to level each character to end game individually, i had 4, one for each class. It would take weeks of serious effort and there was not much to grind on.

Now, with one tamriel, it takes as little as 6 to 10 hours to level to end game, 20 hours if you putter.

So, get one character to CP160. Then grind or play one for each class. There is enough content that you dont have to repeat all that much. And, there are many quick ways to grind.

Here is why. I have seen each class be the darling of the game one quarter, and be the goat the next. And then a few quarters later, it was back on top. This way you are prepared for any changes the devs throw at you.

Now, this does not mean you don't main one character and do most stuff on one, i have one character that i spend the vast majority of time playing. I just have others i can log into for a change of pace.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I had the same mindset when I started the game as an EP nord stamplar, I came from wow and I was expecting it to play out like a ''ret paladin''. Anyways, stamplar was a really weak class back then so I switched to stamDk and played that till morrowind, after morrowind I made a magDK, then a stam warden, then a stamblade, stamsorc, but ended up going back to stamDK because it was the class I enjoyed the most in the end.

Unfortunately you need different characters to try different classes or play a different alliance in cyrodiil. For this reason I made 4 Dks in total because I wanted to play on different alliances and also try out different races which opens up new build paths. I don't chase the meta like the most instead I chase to achieve a build that fullfils my own playstyle.

So If you want to have only one character , you'll not be able to do any of those unfortunately. I'd say do good research and choose very wisely so you won't regret your choice down the line. Race , name , appearance can be changed but your class and alliance can not.

I think I have 11 characters? I bought one extra slot and they’re all full. Stamwarden is an excellent choice btw.

Playing more then one character has some advantages:
    1. You can do the dailies on multiple characters so will get CPs faster
    2. You get to try other classes, and see who’s full on *** on the forums
    3. PvPwise you understand how other classes work and use it against them (very handy)

It’s rough setting it up, and doing the guild skill lines is a huge pain, but it’s worth it imo.

I have a system I follow for my new toons, maybe give it a go if you want to try making another character.

    1-4 doing tutorial
Port to your home city and park the character at the stables, take 10k gold from your bank. Do the mount speed upgrade every day, new characters are too slow to enjoy.
5-10 Do some alikr dolmens, after about 10 you’ll be sleepy. Port back to town and grab the fighter’s guild, mage guild and undaunted. Do all the crafting certifications. Struggle with dolmens until you’re 10.
10 - do one BG and grab rapid maneuvers
11-50. Grab the psijiic quest line. It’ll take you through every zone. Don’t just do the psijiic quest though, grab every skyshard, so every delve, and do every public dungeon skill point boss for every zone you enter. Do your daily BG and dungeon. I use a blue training set with white jewellery at level 16 and 32.

When I started the game there was no warden class. I went stamina Dk because my mindset was simple, I wanted a class that didn't rely on kiting or stealth, I'd prefer to fight till death, I wanted an in your face playstyle, so I chose stamDk.

But if you're curious as to why I didn't stick with stamden after making one, thats cause:
1.stamden had a few problems back then
2.I didn't like not having any dots and I hated d.swing back then.(It was a lot more clunky and difficult to land)

Dots are great and I would take dots on any class I'd play, untill this patch's nerfs obviously. Dk dots and warden dots are in an OK spot though, compared to weapon line dots they're so much stronger.

Stamden , was overall buffed massively this patch, so I went back to stamden and played it for near a month. Its now got two very solid dots and dizzying swing is a lot easier to use. So I'm actually thinking of making a more permament switch to stam warden since Its fair to say that stamina warden feels pretty much like a stamDk 2.0 at the moment. If you make a stam warden, know that you can play it very similarly to a stamDk. But you can't take a stamDk and diversify your build, Its very one dimensional class unfortunately. So I'd say just stick with stamden unless you find cast times or delayed burst difficult to work with, in which case you may not like it.

Next patch there's supposed to be improvements for stamina Dk(specifically stonefist) but I wouldn't really expect big changes. If you want a stamina class that is very distinct and has a lot of class abilities, then you should stick with stam warden. If you specifically want a tank class with melee dots and weapon abilities, then stamDk is the choice.

Getting to level 50 isnt that bad unless you quest your way up every time. Unlike most games their is no reason to play quests right now if you dont want too. They are just as good later as they are now. The rewards and the quest level level with you.

So that means doing more efficient means of leveling which pretty much everything is more efficient than storyline questing. It doesnt mean grind levels. It just means dont worry about doing X now because you are level Y. You can do things in ESO in pretty much any order you want and it will take you ages to get through all the content on a single character. ive been playing a few years and i dont think i have done a quarter of the quests available. I just work through them a few quests at a time.

I typically have one character that i really play through on and dont skip any dialogue or story with. Everyone else i just spam my way through it most of the time because the dialogue in this game is like trying to read every book in the Library of Congress.

One you hit CP levels above level 50 there are 810 but dont let that discourage you. The first 160 go faster than the first 50 levels, then next 140 go pretty fast, then it starts to slow down quite a bit. By about 600 you have to grind if your looking to make any kind of decent progress and by 750 its really slow. The last 10 seem like they take forever unless you focus and grind. BUT CP is only leveled once per account. It is shared between all characters over 50 and can be "worked on" by all characters over level 50. So if you are CP 160 on your main and you get a second character to level 50 then that character becomes CP 160. If you work on the alt character today and get him to CP164 and then swap to your main, he will also have CP 164. Furthermore, a level 1 3rd character could use those 164 CP to give a stat boost but doesnt contribute XP to the CP pool until they are leveled to 50 at which any xp on them gain CP as well.

Furthermore ZOS gives out XP scrolls often in rewards. Also many events like the one starting on Thursday have a buff memento that you need to do a simple quest for and then using the memento out of your collections will give you a 2 hour 100% xp buff during the event. I believe the scrolls are stackable with it up to a 250% XP buff but i am not for sure. You would have to ask someone with more experience with stacking XP items. But from the 19th to the 2nd you will have a 100% XP buff as long as you keep it going. There are like 4 t or 5 of those a year with 3 coming up in the next 6 months.

Also there is not a big need to grind levels in ESO. Besides a little bit of locked content/skills and not having your final gear its not really advantageous. You are buffed to the level of world until you reach CP160. You can still do like 90% of stuff at level 20 that you can do at CP 810. Just make sure you keep your gear up to your level because as you out level gear it loses its stats. Its something unique to ESO because all NPCs are the same level.

It would be easy for me to log on every day and do my crafts etc on all my toons for easy cash, but thats now how I want to play. I have a character, my main, and thats what I want to play and enjoy playing. If I switch, I switch for good and the old character gets completely forgotten when I do.

I have 6 and have only leveled 3 to lvl 50 but I mainly play 1 character. I roll with an imperial stamdk DPS and basically just run all the story content and everything like that. Right now Im trying to complete all normal dungeons and then when I run out of objectives like that I switch to an alt and try something new but its hard I mainly just do random dungeons and BG to level rather than play the same content over and over.

Well my first character was an Altmer, and a magicka sorcerer. At the point of release that seemed the more wizard like option for me. And i love playing wizards. So absoletly play what your gut tells you to.

I am an altoholic, i just love to level characters. I worked really hard this year and have 18 max characters now. Some pve some pvp, some magicka and some stamina.
And so the Elder Scrolls foretold. You will be shy, and I will be bold.

    I currently have 11 characters.

MagSorc (PVE dps) - Main character who I do all quest/story content with and is also my master crafter.
    MagSorc (PVP)
    StamSorc (PVP)
MagPlar (PVE dps) - My most fun character who is sort of a "co-main". Can tackle and and all content with this one.
    MagPlar (PVP)
MagPlar (PVE) - This is my dedicated Healer
StamBlade (PVP/PVE) - This is my dedicated Thief and farming character who makes me the most money
    StamBlade (PVP) - Bow/DW
    Mag Dragonknight (PVE)
    MagCro (PVE)
    StamCro (PVP) - Tank

All are max level (cp860) except for the two Necros. All do writs.

For me, its just creating characters/classes and seeing which ones I enjoy the most. Really, REALLY liking the Templars though. Most of my gaming time is spent with the Healer, my main MagSorc and the MagPlar dps. You'll have 6-8 toons before you know it. Guarantee it.

When I started in 2016, I was like "Yeah, one character only. No need for more, and I don't have time to build another, I'll be fine". I ended up with 16 characters. You are missing out on a lot of fun with just 1 character, that's for sure. Very limiting.

I started out with 1 character. That was when you still had the veteran levels. later I made a magsorc that I levelled to eh, V4 or something. When they ditched the veteran levels I went full on crazy mode and now I have 18 chars on EU of which 15 are maxed out.

My characters actually 'are' each other. I've been playing the same little wood elf since 2007 (Oblivion at that time), through Skyrim and into ESO. She mastered time travel long ago so chronology/era-hopping is of no concern to her. She wakes up in the morning and decides whether to grab her staves or bows and moves among the differing versions of herself (magplar, magsorc, stamsorc…) as easily as she changes hairstyles or costumes. Each version of her looks identical and has only minimal different modifiers to her base name (Buffy).

There are two reasons she plays as seven different variants in ESO - both are driven by the fact that MMO's seem to be obsessed with 'balance':
    1. Any single variant is quite limited and must fit into fairly small box of capabilities for balance purposes. For example, ESO does not very well support blending bows with magic. Or magic with blades. To do what my elf wants to do requires using several class/spec variants.
    2. Classes and skills are routinely changed - much too often and usually for the worse. Rather than rage quitting the game when a beloved character gets badly nerfed, I simply let that variant rest a time and play one that fared better until the silly nerf game comes full circle and the badly nerfed class comes back into the sun.

I prefer single player games but play ESO for its wonderful mass and scale. The fact that it is an MMO is a drawback I accept. The above is simply how I 'adapt and evolve' to deal with the fact that when you build a character you have to realize that you are building on a foundation of unpredictably everchanging sand instead of solid rock that you can rely on.

I have 6 characters, in order of creation they are:
    • PvP magsorc (main),
    • MagDK mule + crafter, for holding geodes, etc.,
    • Magplar, who I have no real plans for at this time,
    • Magblade, currently training for conversion to PvP stamblade,
    • MagDK, eventually destined for PvE tanking,
    • PvE sorc tank, for grinding gear drops and keys.

No Wardens, because the class does not appeal to me thematically - and no Necros, because I haven't bought Elsweyr, and have no plans to do so.

I started out with 1 character, a "do everything magsorc". Including crafting (making your main a crafter = big mistake).
Then storing geodes started becoming a problem, so I rolled a mule alt for that.

Some months later, there was an update where the Sorcerer class lost class access to Major Sorcery (!!!) - it was the Elsweyr update IIRC? - that was the last straw for me, and it made me roll a magplar.

At some point after that, I started to increasingly run into situations where I wished I had a NB character as well, so that was the next logical choice.
Then there was the obvious conclusion that it would be good to also have a playable DK, whose inventory isn't packed full of unbankable geodes and other junk, as is the case with my original DK mule.

And finally, the 2nd Sorc for PvE, that was just a convenience thing really - so that I don't have to deal with respeccing my main between PvP and PvE every time I want to play the other type of content.

Having said that... fully maxing out multiple characters (all skill lines, all skill morphs unlocked & levelled, skyshards, etc.) is such a major pain in the rear.
So far I've only managed to almost completely max out only 1 character, my main - the rest are still a very long way off, and I've been playing for about a year already.

Still, my advice to people with rather limited playing time (such as the OP) - make at least 1 character of every class that you have access to.
Even if you have no intentions of playing these alts anytime soon, a lot of things can change in the future - such as ZOS nerfing your favorite class into the ground.
Not just nerfing the numbers, but also changing abilities so that they no longer function as they used to (such as DK wings, to name one example).
At the very least, log in with the alts regularly - as time permits - to "feed the horses". That way, when/if you decide to switch to maining another class, you will already have a partially or fully trained mount to start with on that character...

...unless you only intend to do overland/quest content (no group PvE, no PvP) - in which case, yeah, it's perfectly viable to have just a single character and shrug off any and all nerfs.

I understand your way of thinking, but that must have been a looooot of work!

Nah...it's not work at all if you enjoy it.

Lots of players look at things as a grind, but I just see it as something to do, so it's not a negative thing for me personally. Plus I play my characters in every aspect, from overworld to trials to PvP and battlegrounds. All, of course, with differing effectiveness. I just need the variety. Keeps things from being overly stale.

I do complain about the games performance a lot. But if you can't already tell by my characters or the amount of time spent, I do love and enjoy this game. And that's exactly why I complain. It's not because I hate the game or want it to be bad...the opposite is true. I love it and want to see it be the best it can be.

I think a lot of people misunderstand that.

It looks like a wise upgrading routine. Some questions:
Do you use food/potions since the start (I surmise the figures are the char's lvls)?
Do you replenish your bank routinely? (do not laugh at, pls, I myself do it, making my toons ALWAYS pay their debts)
How long on average does it take you from 1 to 50?

The advice to have at least 1 char for each class is definitely a sensible one IMHO (I do not return on the why's, as they have been made perfectly clear by others).
That said, I'd like to ask: do you routinely put your CPs on new toons since the start (provided you have 50 lvl toons already, ofc). I do it, and have noticed a definite difference both in performance and levelling speed.

My personal routine for levelling is:

    - Training
    - Go to Rimmen, grab fighter and mages guild (the shard nearby does not hurt, besides), make outfit if you are after it
    - Go to your home city and speak with that darn benefactor. Before, you ought to visit the mages guid, rack ALL the bookshelves, and make at least the alchemy and provisioning certifications for the passives
    - I prefer to reach lvl 10 at Stros/Bethnik, usually it takes about 1 hr
    - From 11 to 50, as #Iskiab pointed out, the psijik quest is handy and reasonable fun (you ought to have the DLC, though)

I just blast mine trough normal Maelstrom Arena 10-50, then do Dolmens for FG and to polish some other skills. Then I just respec, keeping just enough skill points to fill 2 bars with skills (24), then assign the next to crafting, max out that and run just writs (and horses if still needed) until I decide to play them, or not.

Played a magplar exclusively for a long time but eventually I started using 2xp events and free xp scrolls to level some others. Literally all I do is 1 random normal and 1 bg a day during events; outside of events I just level riding skills.

But eventually it allows you to specialize, so now I have a PvE character, a CP PvP character, etc. I have 1 Dark Elf for every class so I can switch between mag/Stam and I have 3 Argonian slaves: Cooks-For-Dunmer, Holds-Monster-Sets, and Holds-Trial-Gear.
